I am a Registered Dietitian.... please e-mail me and I can help you valeriedietitian@yahoo.com
The most important thing is to change your choices, portion control and drink plenty of non-calorie beverages as well as work in exercise.
Eating too little can be a problem as well.

I recommend the first step is to start a food journey -- write down everything you eat/drink.

Hello, I have ehard that it is a good idea to do a cleanse before starting a "diet" or as a jump start? What do you think about this and if it is a true statement what is the best way to go about it. thanks.

Only one thing works: Don't eat sugary or fatty foods, and exercise at least 20 minutes a day. Now, if I could just get off my lazy butt and throw out the rest of the Christmas candy, maybe I could lose that 15 pounds.....

www.mypyramidtracker.gov is a great way to find out how many calories you need to maintain your weight and then you can figure out how many calories you want to consume in a day. the site will also count your calories for you as long as you tell it what you ate. Another great feature is placing your exercise in the site and it will tell you how many calories you burned. i lost 80 pounds using this site and adding exercise.

not necessary -- generally by making a shift in your diet and adding more healthy foods (fruits/vegetables) to add fiber you would naturally 'cleanse'

like potatoes and breads and exercise on
tredmills.

I know what you mean but you know how hard it is to find food that does not contain starch lol

I am doing Weight Watchers.  The last time that I did it I lost more inches that I did pounds, which was fine with me.  I seem to do very well with this diet.  I can't stand the though of not being able to eat anything that I want.  The Weight Watchers teaches me portion control.

Most of us overeat - plain and simple.  "Starch" is not the enemy - our portions are the enemy.  "Carbs" also associated with starch is the main fuel source for the body.  So while it's important not to overdo it, it is best to choose whole wheat varieties and natural sugars (fruit, milk, etc) rather than to avoid all starch/carbs.

The best way I have found to loose weight is to eat less and exercise more. I try to eat healthier. Cut out the sweets and replace it with healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. My favorite way to exercise is to go for long walks. I not only get to enjoy nature but it gives me a chance to think and clear my mind.

i suggest you read the book "curves" by gary heavin. it contains a lot of useful information on eating and some very easy but effective exercise routines you can do at your own home.

if you dont read the book, at least heed this advice: in the book he says all diets will eventually fail because your body will always adjust to the reduced amount of calories you give it. so instead of dieting you must make lifestyle changes.

good luck!

another great thing in the book is a list of "free" foods. these are foods that he says you can eat as much as you want without affecting the rest of your "diet"

absolutely -- it is difficult for MOST people which is why many of us (myself included) have larger than desired waist lines.

Diets don't really work. Life style changes do because if you're on a diet, you'll tend to give up. I am currently 5'4'' and 109lbs and a size 1. I drink six bottles of water daily (it works wonders on your skin). Most people make the mistake of thinking they're hungry when it is just dehydration. An average healthy adult should be drinking eight glasses of water a day but i think thats a little overboard. and then throw in fruits and vegetables. It is really hard at first to drink THAT much water but after the second or third day, you'll get used to it and start actually getting thirsty without it. But also remember that there has to be a balance of diet AND exercise. You can't just depend on diet alone. Good luck(:
