LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.
In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.
"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.
"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

I find Hawking fascinating and his writings thought provoking. Just saw and read this when I got on the computer. Agree or disagree, the man is brilliant IMO.

"Because there is a law such as gravity...
Because there is a law....hmmm I wonder where that law came from?
Hawking also claimed we would be attacked by hostile extraterrestrials. Fascinating.

Dude, he can't even walk. He has no credibility. He has a degenerative disease that has been getting worse since he was 17. (wiki)
He went on Larry King and said Aliens are coming. In a year he'll come up with some crazy story about a guy being born magically and being killed and rising form the dead.......
-
so if the universe created itself, what about the laws of physics? or did the universe just appear and if so how?
-
Fascinating! I should check out this book next time I'm out and about.

We observed it.

Ehhh....I think his point was that we should not look for them because it could pose a threat to our existence if they were more intelligent than us (something we've been prone to doing in our history to eachother and separate species). Obviously just speculation, but he does believe other life is out there. He never said aliens were on their way to destroy us. Remember that overall he was trying to entertain a general audience. He's a cool guy.

We observed it.
LOL Well this is the first time I have heard of observation creating laws....interesting.

Heheheh...it's just the way you worded what I quoted. I saw my opportunity to be a smartass and I took it!

Let's all go ask Hawking! ROAD TRIP! Orrrrr wait...we could just get the book! I know I'll be looking for it. Atleast to skim through it.

??? Are you being serious? If you are, to that I say dude, you are just some guy on a forum. It is you who has no credibility.
Hawking is like Einstein. Get with the program. :angry7:
Note to jordandog: I know on Yahoo they were trying to phrase it like "Hawking changed his views on God". Uh, no he didn't. He's been an atheist for years...

Hawking is brilliant, but that doesn't mean he's right about everything. Even Oprah is wrong sometimes.
-
The world/universe and how is was created is a mystery and therefore we are always looking for answers..when we do not find an answer we make up stuff like God etc.
-
I disagree with Hawking.

queen,
Yes, I noticed that and it's not the first time it's been implied, as I'm sure you know. I think I have gotten to the point where I just 'gloss over' statements to that effect when I see them. ;)

Oprah has been wrong?! LOL ;D

I saw this yesterday and was really interested in this I have always thought Hawking was brillant ;D

Why a Christian god creating the universe is mathematically impossible (explicit language, but valid point):

http://www.goddiscussion.com/25964/professor-says-math-proves-that-god-exists/
Frank Tipler, a former atheist and professor at Tulane University, says that he can prove that God exists by using math. He calls his formula the Cosmological Singularity Principle, which demonstrates that "the universe started over 13 billion years ago at one point, God the Father. Since then it's been expanding with that same point always there. God the Son, far into the future, in about a million, million, trillion years away, the universe will collapse to the one point, God the Holy Spirit. Tipler says the Bible backs up his math in the book of Exodus."
Skeptics say that the math proves something beyond scientific understanding, but to label it as "God" is incorrect.
An atheist in this video says that what does all the proof or evidence mean when you come to the end of equation and God isn't sitting there (paraphrase).
Which just goes to prove, that no matter what evidence is put in front of atheists, there are some who demand that God show up physically and prove who he is. So they basically refuse to believe, in spite of evidence.

This generation seeks for a sign...............
-
Isn't a great part of the bible full of stories about people seeking a sign? Just something to think about.

I was posting in solidarity to Sherene's posting above:
But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the Prophet Jonas (Jonah): For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the Whale's belly, so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12: 39-40
In other words, when Jesus arose, after being dead, that was the sign. You either believe it or not.
