Title: Have you ever been on a cruise?
Post by: sommap on January 12, 2011, 08:28:04 am
I was on one when I was in high school.  We are now thinking of doing a family one (with college aged grandkids).  Does anybody have any suggestions for lines or places to go.  We are big Disney fans, so at first thought about a Disney cruise, but it is geared more for younger kids and is priced way out of line!

I bought a package that had a couple of free cruises in it.  Can't tell you right now what it is because it is also my business, don't want to get in to trouble with posting rules.  I never knew how expensive they are until I bought this package.  Any way I have plans to take a couple this year, just to see the ocean.   Yippee

There's a new ship called the Disney Dream, you should check it out. Its absolutely family friendly, and has what they call the aquaduck, its a huge water slide around the top of the ship.

The new Disney Dream starts sailing on January 26, 2011.

I went on Royal Caribbean last July and went to the Bahamas. It was amazing, but not as kid friendly. They do have children's activities and such. They're just more directed toward the older crowd. I would definitely recommend Royal Caribbean to anyone looking for a couples getaway or just to go have some fun without the kids. They were fantastic!

We took a Carnival cruise about a dozen years ago.  It left from Miami and went to Cancun, Grand Caymen & Jamaica over a period of 7 days.  It was a wonderful time and I loved every minute of it.  We went in May and had beautiful weather through the whole trip.

I went on a cruise with my dad my junior year of high school.  We went to the Caribbean.  It was mostly a good time.  I would definitely like to go on one as an adult!

Boats of any size and I don't mesh.  I get seasick in the bathtub (joke).  Seriously though, I went on a Halibut charter in Homer, Alaska.  We left at 6 am, and came back at 6 pm (12 hours).  I was sick the whole time!  I chummed the waters so they could catch their fish.  It was miserable.  Never again....on any boat.

I had the same experience in the Gulf of Alaska, but on a cruise ship I didn't even feel it for 3 days and did just fine. What made me decide not to go again is they rip you off if you need Internet Access and I know it's not necessary.

Now that sounds like something the whole family could enjoy I have 3 grandsons Maybe we could plan to go sometime in the near future. They went on one when the boys were smaller and I have gone on several when I was married Might be time to go on another one.

I must say, that is one that I will be going on in the near future. Can't wait to hear about people's experiences on it. I work in travel, so I get to see a lot of people taking these kinds of vacations. But you should definitely look into it.

I just recently became a cruise junky just off of one cruise!! lol!!! It was amazing!! We went to Miami a day early and spent a day playin out there, and then cruised to Key West, Nassau, and Coco Cay then back to Miami. It was beautiful. Also did a little parasailing in Coco Cay, I would also recommend that!! Its not scary at all IMO.

Been on a couple Princess cruises and absolutely loved them.  First one was a Caribbean one - great weather, plenty of excursions to choose from.  That ship featured a movie screen on deck where you could watch movies while soaking in the hot tub, or on lounge chairs under the stars like your own personal drive in.

The last cruise I took was to Alaska - absolutely stunning.  Plenty of activities from glacier hiking, to dog sleds, to zip lines, to rock climbing, whale watching and of course, shopping.  The scenery can't be beat - waking up to gorgeous mountains every day, and seeing wild Orcas was amazing!  Highly recommend cruising to AK at some point in your life.

No it's not.  Same with some airlines too (high cost of internet fees).  It depends on the mother company.

I have never been on a cruise.  I like to get to my destination and go out and explore.... I know the ships are large but it seems to restrictive to me.  It might be fun and maybe one day I will change my mind and try one.  Everyone I know that has been loves it but it just doesn't seem like something I would enjoy.

No, but I am so ready - today in fact.  It is 23 degrees here in NW Florida, about 20 degrees lower than average.  That makes 2 winters in a row.  Anyway, cruises sound fabulous and I hear that the food is wonderful.

went on one a few years back to Bahamas and Key West.
We went in October -- very rough waters in Hurrican season but CHEAP cruise!  :)
We enjoyed it, we are not the seasick type so that helped.

We enjoyed our relaxation -- no children were with us though so not sure about what types of things for them there would have been.

We went on the exact same cruise about five years ago.  We had a great time.  In my opinion, Carnival caters to both kids and teenagers.  However, your best bet is to get on the internet and check some cruise lines to find out which one best meets your requirements.

Our college age kids love Disney and WDW, but the Disneyships seem to be geared to the young kids.  Thanks for all of your input.

I have been on 2 cruises.  One in the Bahamas and one around Alaska.  We loved the Alaska Cruise and looking to book another one this summer.  They are the best.  Everything has been taken care of and you just relax.

I  have not ever been on a cruise and neither has my wife it is part of my own Bucket List, I have to influnence my wife on  the idea. When we travelled to St. Michaels, Md she discovered how much she enjoyed our boat trip  in the busy lagoon area so naturally I saw that as a good sign.  :fish:

No cruises for me...because they are very expensive. Lots of ferry trips for me because they are reasonably priced.

Yes, I've been on the 2 to 12 hour cruises, those are alot of fun.  Fine dining, dancing, fresh air.  I've also been to the Bahamas.  It kind of scares me to think bout being out on a great big ocean.  Crime's too high.

No I have not. I have never been out far where there is a lot of water. But I always wanted to experience what they were like. I would love to go on one one of these days. I heard that they are a lot of fun and you get to enjoy yourself!

I have been on the Carribean Cruise aboard the Carnival Conquest almost 5 years ago on a one week journey. You can sunbathe and snack all day long. I like the ocean. :fish: The first day can give some people motion sickness because the ship sails accordingly to the strength of the water wave. I have never experienced any motion sickness, but by the end of the journey, I felt a little motion withdrawal since I got used to the ship’s momentum on water. ;D  :fish: One time experience on a cruise is good enough for me and I enjoyed it.  :)  :fish:

I know people that did disney cruises. The only problem is probably 50 percent of the Cruisers are kids so alot of the entertainment and ships foods etc are swayed toward Kids. I have done two cruises on Carnival Cruise Lines and have had a great time and they lean more toward adults - Princess cruises are also good, a little more expensive though. I personally like the Eastern or Western Caribean - Virgin Islands U.S/UK, St Martin etc.

I have never been on a cruise.  But I have always wanted too.  I would like to go on the Alaskan Cruise but the air fare is so high to get out west.  The cruise is not that costly.  Just the plane ticket.

YES YES!!! I've been on a cruise and would have to say it was one of the most relaxing vacation experience I've ever had.  I was totally against it in the beginning.. I couldn't get the theme song from The Love Boat out of my head.  A group of us met a couple days before boat departure in Puerto Rico
then boarded for a 5 day cruise.  Great food, nice excursions when leaving the ship, all night parties, gambling and even karaoke.
