Title: cell phone use while driving
Post by: mfoyama on March 25, 2011, 09:17:57 pm
About a year ago in our state, a new law was enacted prohibiting cell phone use while driving. I still see people driving and talking on their cell phones. Yesterday, I saw woman driving while reading from a paper she propped up on her steering wheel. Should the fines be higher for talking while driving?

When I was younger I used to text and drive until one day I almost hit a gaurd rail so I dont do it anymore. It really angers me now when I see people doing it. Driving down the highway you can tell which drivers are on their phones because they'll be deviating in their lanes. So then as you drive by you glance over at them to see if you were right and YUP 9 times outta 10 that person was either texting or talking on their phone. I know it's bad to say but sometimes I wish I could "accidentally" run those people off the road and then make them think it was their fault and say "see, now look what you did! Get off your damn phone!" This one time I saw a lady drive by while me and my dad were working on a fence close to the road on our farm, I could see her looking down at her phone and then she hit the dirt on the side of the blacktop and swerved back onto the road going prolly 60 mph. As she was going by I saw 3 little car seats in the back! Made me soooo mad!

I think that there's a lot of things that are distracting while driving.  Children arguing in the backseat can be very distracting and cause accidents but that's hard to avoid if your a parent.  Reading a book/newspaper, texting, talking on the phone, eating, etc are all unnecessary distractions that cause accidents and cost the lives of innocent people who were being responsible drivers.  Unless your waiting on a call because a family member is in the hospital or something very important like that then the call can wait.  Even if you do answer it its called bluetooth or speaker phone and make it quick and short and get back to driving or pull over if it's going to be a long conversation.

I don't think the fines need to be increase, but I think it should be enforced more.

in my state you are allowed to talk on the phone as long as its handfree. but for now you cant be fined unless they pull you over for another reason. i hate it. i think that our law should have passed and that it needs to be ENFORCED a great deal. i see people driving all the time on their phones and it scares the crap out of me to pass them, been almost hit serveral times. i have decided that from now on im not avoiding an accident as long as it would be minor if the other driver is on their phone. i will let them him me and then my luck would be that they wouldnt get fined for being on the phone.

I have seen alot of people use the cell phone while driving. I would have to say yes there can be other distraction but driving with one hand in my opoion is the most dangerous and stupidest thing that a person can do. I don't use the cell phone while driving I will say this the only waay that I will be on the cell phone while driving is through a hand set. People just don't pay attention with a cell phone to you ear with one hand and driving with the other. Just to dangerous for kids.

I still see lots of people driving and talking on their cell phones (without headsets) or even texting!
One time when I was on a bus, I saw a truck driver who was talking on his cell phone and eating ramen noodles while driving and I couldn't believe it. >:( They won't stop doing it until they kill somebody.

Yes, it really should be enforced.  I know on the military bases you can't talk on cellphones  while driving.  Of course they have a law that you can not talk on a cellphone by a school.  It does need to be enforced , but with good laws, it goes to the back side, like seat belts.

Our city made a law that said we couldn't text or talk on the cell phone; however, the state overrode it with just texting on the cell phone. I STILL see people texting ALL the time while they swerve all over the road...SO dangerous! Talking is not nearly as bad as texting, to me at least, to text you are taking your eyes completely off the road.

I see it all of the time and it's so annoying especially when you see the person drifting into other lanes or sitting at a traffic light that has turned green because they looking down at their phone.

I can't understand why anyone would want to talk on a cell phone or read a newspaper while driving.  There is a time and place for everything.  I think there should be a stiff fine for anyone that is caught doing it and maybe that would stop them from doing it.

I don't see why anyone would text and drive. I have a friend who can hardly change the song on the iPod and remain in the right lane. I'm 6 months pregnant, and get nervous every time she does this.

It has been alot accident from texting. The other day I saw a lady texting and there was a red light she didnt see the red and hit the car infront of her. She felt stupid for not looking. But can be worst. And about the people dont care and they never will unless they do like the camera on lights.

It's probably not a primary offence like speeding. Police can't pull you over for using the phone (same as driving without a seat belt), but if they pull you over for something else they can than additionally cite you for using a cell phone while driving.

I think this law should definitely be enforced. To many people are hurt everyday in car accidents.

You know what really ticked me off the other day. It is illegal to talk on your phone and drive in Maryland. Yet, I saw a police officer jabbering away on her phone while she was driving. The worst thing was that it was right next to the park where all the kids were playing soccer. Pretty sure she wasn't going to give herself a ticket for it.  >:(

I think they do need to enforcement more. I know I need to put mine down more. I think that many things distract us while we drive, cellphones, other cars, thinking about the days stress.

I completely agree with the texting while driving....you cannot text and watch the other cars on the road at the same time. You cannot read a text (or a newspaper) and keep your eyes on the road.

The cell phone....eh I don't think that a cell phone is any more distracting than my son counting from 1 to 10 and blasting off in the back seat or my mom (or a friend) in the seat next to me talking to me. Cell phone or additional person in the car my attention is equally divided.

I will say though that when I am using my cell phone and driving I am hypervigilant because I don't use a hands-free device and I want ample warning if I have to drop my phone for any reason. And to tell you the truth talking on my phone saved someone's life once. I had just been on the phone (work thing but that's beside the point)....had hung up maybe a min or two before that tops so the hypervigilance hadn't had a chance to really wear off yet. Poorly lit road and some guy decides to run across the road in between two streetlights, wearing black... I slam on my brakes and my mom starts asking me what the hell I'm doing am I insane etc...THEN she sees him, running across the front of the car with his hand out like he's Superman. Had I not JUST been on the phone I would have hit him....had my mom been driving SHE would have hit him. Very scary!!

:BangHead: I think it is crazy to text while you are driving. I never do this. The other day I seen a bus driver texting while she had kids on the bus and I reported her and they fired her. The very thought of our kids lives in her hands- GROW UP PEOPLE_

I think that its a good idea to ban the use of cell phones while in the car. they are dangerous and distracting. I'm not going to lie, I talk on my phone while i drive, and i know its not safe, but if it were prohibited here then I wouldnt do it.

It is a problem that is always going to be around, and is just going to get worse as time goes on. I will admit that I do use my phone when driving sometimes. Although I find if I put it on silent then I don't have to know when someone is texting or calling, so that helps me a little bit.

I saw a girl while driving she put on her make up.  She drive over the freeway speed.  Every single thing she need to make her make up she bend down and reach it every 30 second and put on her second thing.  I drove far away from her so I don't get hit by her.  She deserve a ticket and no one doing anything about it.
