If you are talking about sales tax....it might depend on the state you live in. For instance, Oregon doesn't have a sales tax.....and with any luck we never will.

I think it depends. Stuff on there actually comes from different stores sometimes. Generally the rule is that if the place you buy it from has a physical presence in your state they have to charge you. I think technically you may owe the state anyway but I doubt most people ever pay. I have purchased things from there and not been charged here in CA. I think Amazon may avoid having a presence here for that very reason.

I have bought TONS of things from Amazon and I can't recall ever having to pay sales tax on anything that I have purchased there. Just shipping and handling if I am buying from vendors other that Amazon. I don't usually have to pay Amazon shipping because I am almost always over the $25 free shipping deal and rarely buy anything that is not a part of that deal. Mostly I purchase books. :)

I live in CA and Amazon used to not charge sales tax but for some reason I noticed that my last order did have it as part of the total

As far as I can recall I have yet to be charged taxes on any order I've placed on Amazon.

No. Amazon does not host businesses who are in states that collect internet taxes. Our brain damaged governor Quinn just chased Amazon.com out of the state by trying to tax them.

I know Kentucky does, because one of their warehouses is in Lexington.

I REALLY DON'T KNOW.
