I use Microsoft Securities the free version seems to work fine. There are a couple more like Avast or AVG, that have ok free versions.
-
All of the free versions have their pluses and minuses. One of the biggest factors is the computer user, not the antivirus program. An antivirus is worthless unless the person running the computer updates it. I can't tell you the number of computers I've seen where they've got virus definitions > 1 year old.
For me personally, I use AVG 2011 and AdAware. I also have Windows updates running automatically, surf with Firefox, and use the NoScript and Adblock Plus firefox extensions. I selectively disable the last two when doing FusionCash offers, but so far they've kept me safe. In the past year I've gotten one small exploit download, but it was quarantined and deleted quickly.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and it works just fine for me. The AVG free edition works just as good too. Why waste any money on anti virus software when you can get some for free?

How do you delete the "virus definitions" from your computer?

I use Avira AntiVir Personal free addition. I haven't had one problem since using it. I used to use AVG, but started having problems with my computer. Before the conflicts started happening, I was quite happy with AVG, too. Avira, AVG, and Avast are all good free programs.
Like Randall said, it's foolish to spend money on antivirus software when there are several available which work perfectly fine. You just need to make sure to get the updates, have the settings set up properly, and do scans often.

Yeah microsoft esentials is what I use. It has some malware protection but I aso use the free Adaware by lavasoft because I like its reltime protection.

I have always been happy with AVG everything is usually picked up right away and taken care of right then. :) I have never had a virus due to anything but user error on my part. I use a combination of AVG antivirus software and a Comodo firewall.

I use AVG due to work at home on the computer, however, I am noticing slowness and my internet browser firefox locks up alot. I heard it was due to AVG? I am not sure I have to get someone look at my computer to see.

You don't have to delete the old ones, you just need to make sure that whatever anti-virus program you run is set to update automatically.
A lot of computers come pre-loaded with Norton Anti-Virus, which offers a free period for a time. After the free period expires, it won't download new definitions any more.

Using AVG, no problem with it at all and it always caught something when it was a threat to computer.

I was using McAfee for years. Until I ended up getting a virus on my computer and I could not get rid of the virus. Until a friend told me to try Microsoft Security Essentials and it got rid of the virus and it is free on Microsoft website.

I recently downloaded AVG...i suppose it's been good to me so far....

I have Malware Bytes. I haven't had any problems at all since I put it on here after a virus hit me when I had AVG. It doesn't slow down my internet browser or lock anything up. It picks up just about everything and it doesn't slow down my computer's speed. :D

pctools offers several free programs to help you protect your computer and I've used all the pay ones before, these free ones have worked better and been less annoying for me.
