I have heard a lot or talk lately about there being no Social Security checks released the month of August! Is it just "political talk" because of the upcoming election? Or do you think it will really happen? This is a major concern with my husband as he is planning to retire this year. What are your views? :dontknow:

It's scare tactics at work and I doubt if even Obama wants to butt heads with 50 MILLION mean and nasty old folks, because that's just like trying to take a juicy bone that still has meat on it away from a bulldog.

I agree with Oldbuddy. This is pure political posturing and a scare tactic. These politicians want to get re-elected, don't they? ;D

some were it as to give ,with people fighting over stuff that dont mean nother at all for the white house,i thik social secrity should be left a as is and dont move it becouse alot of us dids it at that age or them people that are on will miss them up alot, live it alone and live it the some as it is now

I watched Suze Orman talk about social security and she said she's not worried about social security going away, she's worried about them continuing to extend the age people will be eligible for SS.

It's not the government extending it, in fact they are trying to reduce it by starting at a later age. It's medical science allowing more people to live longer.

Absolutely and people are now having less kids which eventually mean less people contributing to social security and on top of that less jobs. So it comes down to more money going out than coming in.

At some point in time one demographic or the entire tax paying population is going to bite the bullet so to speak. Taxes will inevitably be raised or benefits will be reduced or wiped out. Sure their will be uproar at first, but people will move on and adapt. Income witholding in many parts of the world are much higher than they are here.

I sure hope not ~ I haven't gotten to receive any back yet, only have gotten to pay into it so far.

All that Social Security talk worries me because I'm hoping to retire in 5 years but may not be able to.

Don't feel bad, I am already 11 years into it and passed the point of no return. No way am I going to flip burgers!

I am concerend about it it because my husband had a brain injury when is was 17 and he only worked under the table (he did't know that hurt him in the long run) He started recieving SSI in 2001 and in 2008 I became disabeled but I don't recieve anything cuz the Judge says I am disabeled but not enough, so we live off my husbands $641 a month and we are really struggling and if they take that away we will be in trouble. I would get what I paid in so his SSi would go down because he never paid in. When I was working I didn't worry so much about his disability but I can't work now and the judge says I can get a job that will allow me to sit, stand and lay down for a while but I can't find anyone who will give me a job full time with those limitations and not lifting over 10lbs, so I don't know what we will do.
-
Yeah they'll decrease it and phase it out slowly so people won't revolt.
-
People have been saying social security coming to an end as far back as I can remember. I don't think the baby boomers will let this happen.
-
They can do away with social security for all I care. Give me the money they take out of my check for it now. They have been telling my generation that ss will not be around when we retire so I never planned on depending on ss to be my only income in retirement. I wish I could opt out so they can stop taking that money out of my check so I can have more money to invest it how I want now.
-
I sure hope not because that check helps pay the bills each month after month after month!
-
I know I paid alot in to social security the whole time I worked and I have been working since I was 16 and today I got the judges hearing saying I didn't get it and I can work and he listed all the restrictions and MY consern is who is going to hiring me with that when job are so scarse now for people who don't have restrictions. I have all the credits and everything they say I am disabeled but turn around and diney me. I cried and got mad but what am I supose to do, and now they want to cut the budget so I guess I am just screwed. I went to school right out of high school and no one would hire me because I was educated and now I can't work so how am I supose to save if all I made was enough to pay daily living costs. I am confused and upset and don't know what to do.

No, but if we dont do something about reforming it soon, it will be insolvent.

Do you mean Social Security or the United States Government? The government has been there for many years.
-
They need to do something about Social Security, so that it will be there. I thought the whole purpose of taking a precetage out of our checks when we work was so that social security would be there when we needed it. Now they want to cut the program or somthing. What about all that money they collect from people who are working now. I mean My generation will not be able to retire for another 23 years or so (which they could raise the age again by than) and they would not be there when I hit 63 or so. I am just nervse because I never had a real good job and Never worked on a full time bases. I mean In the In home care between working with the clients and driving I worked over 40 hours but they don't count the drive time so I never qualified as a full time employee. Which I think messed me up so health benefits and stuff. I did this for 12.5 years someone had to help the elderly and disabiled so they could stay home instead of a nursing home. I loved what I did and My clients became lilke a family member the hardest thing for me is when they died I lost a love one just as if they were my grandparents or parents I hostly got attached to my clients thats why I couldn't quit when I became disabled but I ended up quiting in 2008 because my suprivisor was getting upset because I wouldn't take clients I had to lift and their requirment is lifting at least 100lbs they were going to fire me which if they had I might of been approved for disability by now but I never beeen fired so I quit.

Too true. But I meant Social Security. Same with Medicare. Fiscally we are in sorry shape.
-
That is a real hard one. I know that people are living longer and also that not as many people are paying in. But if you do away with it you are going to increase the amount of people that are on welfare. If you don't have the income and you are unable to work you are going to apply for some form of welfare. So I don't see how that is going to help anyone. I know that most people have invested something to help with their SSI when they retire but that is something that as only started in the last couple generations. And with the way things are going for most people they have either last it or have had to use it to get by. So I hope that it is something that does not come to a point were they end it but find a way to fix what should not have been broken in the first place.
-
Of course it's going to end if millions of Americans continue to be out of work.
-
Most likely. George Carlin lays it all out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acLW1vFO-2Q
Viva la revolution!
-
i really do not think so-they can not just stop it what are people going to do if they stop getting it? it is bad enough that there not enough jobs for americans. :icon_rr:
-
It is getting scary all these years of working doesnt mean crap!!! :angry7: :BangHead:
-
I think Social Security will be just fine. I don't think the governent wants the people who support them rioting in the street. :o :o
-
It would have been just fine---IF----the damn government had not have stolen the American people's money that they paid into the Social Security Trust Fund. But, no the greedy and spend thrift bastards saw all that money just sitting there and could not keep their slimey hands off of it. SOOOOOOO they just stole it and put in an I-O-U to the American People.
The only solution to this and most of the economic woes in this country would be the implementation of The Fair Tax!!!
BUTTTTT that probably will not happen, so your guess is as good as mine as to what might happen, then.
-
It's unfortunate that we are letting and trusting the government to take care of us. Have they really done a good job in the past? These people that are supposed to receive ss can't because the government spent their money! I am long way away from receiving any social security and unless they do something about it I won't get anything and honestly I don't think it's fair. Maybe ss should be an option to take out of your pay. If I took all the money that has been taken out of my pay and had my own account I wouldn't be so worried. The government needs to get it's priorities straight and fix what doesn't work anymore, which is a lot of work that they don't want to do. Promises mean nothing, turn it into some action...

You have to go back to truly understand the overall financial "health" of this country and by extension all it's programs. I like Ron Paul's idea of bringing the troops home, all the money that was spent on thise pointless wars be used to shore up Socia Security, pay down the debt but give young people a chance to opt out of social security so over time it gets phased out. The only problem with that is that over time people would have to be responsible for themselves and a lot of people probably wouldn't like that.
