I did not know that you should not be drinking while you eat and at least a half hour after you eat that it messes up your digestion and amino acids and all that well anyways I did not know that did you guys?
-
I don't drink when I am eating because it makes you full faster. My father broke me from that when I was younger. He wouldn't let me drink while eating I guess I used to do that and I wouldn't finish my food. I don't remember if that was really the case but it makes sense I guess.
-
I've never heard of such things. Would you like to buy a bridge cheap?
-
makes you become full if you drink while and after eating
-
i don't drink while i am eating.. i never did and never really thought about it until i got married and my husband pointed it out time after time... and the only conclusion that i came up with is that i don't like mixing the flavor of my drinks with my food b/c i also don't mix my foods( i eat all of one item on my plate before i start another).....IDK

I have about 8 oz of water 30 min before meals. Better for digestion and also helps me eat less.
-
I don't think this is correct. I always drink something with my meals. What in the world would it matter if you drank anything before or after? I do know people who take medication sometimes without water which I find absolutely creepy. I always have to drink a big glass of water when taking medication or it makes me sick to my stomach.
-
Does this mean nothing to drink at all - such as water, juice, coffee, etc? I've never heard of that.
-
I usually dont drink while eating or I will have a few sips here and there depending on what Im eating. I just never really felt the need for it. A lot of my friends do this with their kids but my munchkin chokes half the time on his food or puts so much in there he drinks to help him even swallow. We are still in the process of stopping him from doing this but I think he just wants to hurry up the feeding process so he can get down and play.

i always drink with my food

I really don't think this is true at all. If you have proof or an article about it I would be more likely to take it seriously.
Our bodies are mostly water as it is and often we aren't drinking enough anyway with jobs, kids, errands, etc. I can't imagine that it matters when you drink your water as long as you are getting enough. A lot of people use water for weight loss by drinking a lot before eating so they feel fuller more quickly. Water also provides lubrication for eating your food so it is easier to swallow so you don't choke on it. Water can also help with preventing constipation later on.

No i do not have proof I just heard that it is bad I am trying to research this because I heard not to drink a half hour before you eat and a half hour to 2 hours after you eat and if you are supposed to eat every four hours which i have also heard that does not leave to much time to drink water at all!!!

Drinking while eating the best!! :angel12:
-
i never eat a meal without something to drink!
my fiance does that, though. i'm not sure HOW,
i guess he's just used to it. i like a drink to clear
my throat, or for small breaks through the meal.
never heard of that theory though. i would think
it would help the digestive system, as the liquid
would be absorbed into the food and thus breaking
it down much quicker?
:dontknow:

I do not like this statement because - How are going to break down your solid foods? Without a drink I think you will get indigestion!
-
I eat, then i drink somthing to was it down

Drinking as you eat is fine as long as it's not in excessive amounts. It does inhibit the hormone ADH, which is the hormone that tells you that you're thirsty. This is why people get hangovers after getting really drunk because their brains are dehydrated and in need of more oxygen and water.

I have never heard of that, and I have talked with many dieticians about eating healthy. If anything, most would argue that most people don't drink enough liquids during the day. The only thing that I could think of is that sometimes people get into a habit of using their drink as a way to wash the food down their throat without actually chewing the food first. A lot of digestion occurs in the mouth, with the mechanical breakdown by your teeth as well as some chemical breakdown by your saliva. If you gulp down a drink too quickly, then you are not allowing your mouth to breakdown the food as much as it should. Furthermore, some of your taste receptors (esp for fats) trigger in your brain a "full" feeling. That is why you should slowly chew your food; this also help you feel full faster and thereby cause you to eat less food.
I think sometimes parents (esp from older generations when food wasn't readily available, like during the depression, or from children of depression-era parents) may have made this "rule" more for the sake of cost-effectiveness. Meats and other portions of a meal are more costly than the drink, so if you fill up on water and bread before eating your meal, then you are wasting money (in their eyes). But as our culture is continually overeating and the rate of diabetes is on the rise, in the long run this may actually save on costs in terms of future medical care. Instead of being worried about wasting money by filling up on water, they should rather be making smaller portions of the meal and not worry about how much drinking was consumed.

I have heard that you should not drink during meals but I have never heard that you have to wait a full half hour after meals before you drink liquid. I think perhaps we both need to consult a nutritionist so that we can be sure.
Thanks for the heads up!

No, I did not know that...interesting.

This is something I've heard before - it's nothing new. It is mainly for when one eats their main ("big") meals to limit the amount of liquid consumed during and shortly after eating. The reason is when your body begins the digestion process, increases the temperature of your stomach (mainly the acids do this) to promote the digestion process. This also takes a bit of energy from you during this first stage of the digestion process which is why some people tend to want to take a nap.
Drinking - particularly cold drinks - during this process only serves to counteract the digestive process, slowing it down, which could lead to some digestive issues. It's generally better to drink "air temperature" to hot liquids as those would be less of a counter-agent to the process. The main digestive process takes approximately 20-30 minutes (varying by person and amount consumed), which explains the advice to wait until 30 minutes post-meal.
It's not to say one can't or shouldn't drink - in fact it's advisable to drink water about 30 minutes prior to a big meal if you want the liquid to have any impact on decreasing how much you eat. Drinking during the meal won't accomplish this as it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register you're full. Due to this timing, that is also the reason for the advice to eat meals more slowly - to enjoy the meal - as eating fast is the most common reason for "over stuffing" one's stomach - you eat too fast that you overate before your body realized it overate.
Mostly it's just to be aware of the process, and if you are one that tends to have digestion issues, you may want to consider limiting or changing the types of liquids consumed during a meal as a step to alleviate those issues.
I've received this information from books, nutritionists, doctors, a wide variety of sources I deemed as credible, so believe this information - when viewed in it's whole context. After thinking about the process, seems to make sense to me.

i always drink after i finish eating
-
I grew up never being allowed to drink and eat at the same time. I still don't drink until after I eat. My son is grown now and he doesn't drink until after he eats as well.
-
Yeah and if you continually run while your eating it speeds up your matabolism.
-
That information does not sound accurate at all. Are you talking about alcoholic drinks? Because I know for a fact that drinking water with meals expedites your metabolism tremendously.
-
Well ive never understood how people could drink beer and eat pizza together! yuck!! :dontknow:
-
I can't help but drink and eat at the same time. It's a habit I should probably break so I don't fill up so fast but every time i try I fail miserably.
-
Uh no never heard of this I know drinking while eating makes you full faster but whats wrong with having something to drink to wash down your food.Hmm if I followed this rule I would surely be constipated :sad1:
-
I think you need to drink while eating, helps with digestion and helps you eat less (which I'm sure most people prefer)...the important thing is to not eat too fast and give some in between eat bite/sip, etc....I know I (and a lot of people) have the bad habit of eating too quickly...
-
Yes I have read about that. I admit I still break this rule. :( Drinking water may flush away the enzymes needed to break down the food after chewing it thoroughly. It is suggested to drink water before and after the end of meals, not together while you eat. This fact was given by the seer and clairvoyant Edgar Cayce.

I haven't heard of that, until now. I was raised with a glass of milk with my meal. My parents would sometimes have wine or beer with a meal because of the good taste combinations. These days I drink cold tea. Unless the flavors don't mix it accompanies every meal.
Some cultures have wine with their meals all the time.
Different strokes for different folks. Go with what works best for you. :peace:
