Title: Does anyone dabble in Photoshop?
Post by: sapphiratigress on September 10, 2011, 05:59:32 pm
I was just curious. I play around with it myself and its quite fun! Just thought maybe someone else here might and could give me a few tips on trying to create graphics. And tell me why some of my features magically disappeared! :-[

I use Photoshop to improve my photos (adjust white balance, saturation, cropping, etc), but I've never tried any graphics with it. sorry I can't be of more help.
Can you elaborate more on what features disappeared? Maybe I could help you if I knew what you were missing.

I can't afford Photoshop or the time to master it, so I am quite satisfied with Photoshop Elements at about 1/4 the cost. I found some awesome templates recently and almost cried when I read they required Photoshop CS2 or later, but after some testing I discovered they worked fine with my Photoshop Elements 8.

I've used it (in an amateur way) for years.  What features of yours disappeared?  Are they just windowns you accidentally closed?

Its more of the type of Filters that have disappeared. I'm sure there are other things as well. Oh! My ability to save for web or devices. I used to be able to do it, and cannot anymore. I have no idea why! The blur is radial blur. there were more but I can't place which ones they were.

It wasn't a window that I closed. Its like my Photoshop reset itself and didn't have those features anymore. It bothers me because I found a new effect I'd like to try and I don't have my radial blur to do it with! :( And I know how to reopen windows in that tab on the top. I do it all the time. I'm also quite surprised to hear that Photoshop is mostly used for photo's. I thought more people would be into graphics. But I know its an amazing program to help clear up photos and create realistic effects.

When I was doing research, I used photoshop a lot, mostly to annotate pictures and clean up the clarity on some. When I was first learning photo editing, there was a parody website that had people enter in mashed-up movie names: 2 or more movies having a common word (or part of a word) that then get blended together: "Night of the Living, Evil Dead" is mashed of "Night of the Living Dead" and "Evil Dead". And people could also create various things about the movie (tag-line, plot summary, memorable quote, etc.) including movie posters. So I had made a movie poster for "Remember the Titanic" (mashup of "Remember the Titans" and "Titanic"). It used a "Titanic" poster / cover which featured Leonardo DeCaprio in the sky (http://img.movie2k.to/thumbs/cover-375928-Titanic-movie2k-film.jpg (http://img.movie2k.to/thumbs/cover-375928-Titanic-movie2k-film.jpg)) and the poster from "Remember the Titans" that showed Denzel Washington. Then I used photoshop to cut out Denzel's face, changed the color of that picture to the sky-blue / gray colors from the Titanic poster, and replaced Kate Winslet's picture with this photoshopped Denzel, making it look like Leonardo was attempting to kiss Denzel. Everyone on the site like the picture, and thought it looked very realistic (I wish I still had that creation; I probably do somewhere in my computer store hoard).

I really like the web-site PhotoshopContest.com. Each week they have a picture that others use to "chop" into their own creations, and then site members get to vote for their favorite picture. Some have been so good that I use the picture as a desktop background. It may be a good site to get ideas as to what is possible in Photoshop.

I actually use Paintshop Pro...as an amateur.  Have dabbled with Photoshop a few times though.  If you go to Google, do a search for tutorials...there are some awesome lessons out there for it, that teach how to do graphics, edit images, reduce red eye..anything you could imagine.  You can also do a Google search for free filters, tubes..possibilites are limitless!

Hrmmm. Never heard of the place, but it sounds interesting so I think I'll attempt to go there. I would love to see what people do with Photoshop! I'm always open to new ideas and such.

That's pretty good! I've never really done photomanipulation which is what a lot of people I've seen do. I'm no good at cutting things from pictures. lol. I try so hard and it seems like no matter what too much of the picture gets cut out or too little!  :BangHead: it gets irritating sometimes.

I've also looked for free filters online..but I haven't found many. Especially not blurs. Mostly just ones for editing photos.

thanks! try not to cut exactly around what you want to cut out...leave a little space around it, then use your eraser tool and erase up to the edges of what you're cutting out :) makes it a lot easier!

Your welcome! I've tried that, but I'm just so terrible, I can't keep my hand steady. I don't really have a tablet to work with otherwise I'd be able to do a lot better with that. I just have my trackpad or a mouse which doesn't help much when you want to something very detailed. I do use a LOT of brushes and I find a lot of those free(or with creditation) on deviantart. Its a worthwhile place to have a free membership. I find a lot of beautiful photoshop works there, as well as some really good free stuff including textures and other things. They even have stuff for GIMP too. I would have gone and used that, but I decided to keep photoshop. lol.  ;D

Oh that's cool :D You guys are both on here? I would love to see some more of your work if you have a website or an account somewhere. I could show you mine too if I could find one worthwhile. Most of my work is based on emotions though. Have had a LOT of expressive works lol.

lol I don't have any referral's so don't feel bad. Don't think I'll have any either. But I like your stuff! :D Its cool! And I have a few things posted. Most of them I deleted. But some of them are on photoshop, deviantart and facebook. lol. I can show you the most recent thing I've been working on though :)

http://sapphiratigress.deviantart.com/art/Choices-258299318

That's my deviantart account. If you hit my name it'll take you to my profile then hit gallery and it'll show some of my works. By the way, in no way, shape, or form is that recent picture done at all. lol I still have to fade out the boxes and clean up a few things. Most of my works are there, and some are...here

http://www.photoshop.com/users/SapphiraTigress

that's basically it. Everything from my facebook is on one of those two sites lol.

I have no idea how to work GIMP. Have you looked to youtube for advice? Its where I got most of my effect ideas from on Photoshop. And how I figured out how to work most of the tools. I've never worked GIMP so I've no idea what its like.

I'm an internet marketer and the only reason I use graphics is to create web pages and splash pages to get people to become referrals, so simple is better for me. I tried all kinds of free or cheap graphics solutions over the years and FINALLY settled for buying an older version of Adobe Photoshop Elements on Ebay for around $20 and loved it. Since then I have upgraded several times (but never to the latest version) and I am satisfied that it does all I need. I just wish I would have started there and saved bucket loads of cash and hours of time wasted.

One of the main benefits is it reads Photoshop psd files, so when I found a beautiful template that fit my needs perfect and it said I needed Photoshop CS3 or above ($400) to edit it, I was delighted when I discovered my Elements 8 ($99 from Adobe or less from others) did the job just fine.

I don't need photoshop since I have Gimp and its totally for FREE!!!!! I would never waste $500 or more on photoshop when there is something out there that can do nearly the same thing :)

That's why I have Photoshop Elements for a LOT less, but trust me when I say there are plenty of things Gimp will not do, and it's much harder to use. For one thing, it doesn't read psd files and that is HUGE.

I've watched several tutorials on YouTube regarding layers on GIMP,and I can't seem to open the box that has the "eye" icon in it.Also when I get the "moving ants" effect on my art work, the result ends up looking like a huge smudge! :BangHead:

I'm just gonna continue to learn how to use Gimp while everyone waste their money on expensive programs. It just doesn't make any sense to me. There is a website out there where people help each other to learn how to use Gimp. You can also follow their tutorials and practice using Gimp. Anyways, Gimp is not all that hard to learn as some people like to make it sound hard :)
