Title: Behind every man...
Post by: articx on September 23, 2011, 08:09:44 pm
Are you familiar with the saying, "Behind every great man is a woman?"

Do you think this can be seen as offensive? Why or why not?

If you stop and think about it, it is offensive, both to men and women.  It insults women by implying that a woman's purpose is to support a man.  It insults men by implying that a man without a woman's support is unlikely to be great.

At least, I can see it that way.  I can also see it as a sort of backhand compliment, but it wouldn't be the type of compliment I'd want.   ;D

That is not offensive. Unless there are men who hatched from eggs, every man was born from a woman. And great men at some time or another were influenced at least by their mothers.

I don't think it's offensive. I think there's a lot of fact behind the saying.

Does a man need a woman in his life, if he wants a chance at being great?

I take it that man wouldn't get anything done if woman wasn't behind him to prod him on.....

 Great response because this is exactly how I feel about this saying! You just made the reply before I was able to! Great job!

Doesn't really make sense to me in this age and time. Why? Well behind every great man, there could be a woman, OR a man, or a child(son or daughter). I think the term needs to be expanded a little, because things have changed!

Since he is driven by his hormones----THEN-----He definately needs some relief from somewhere.
