Title: Do you still write checks?
Post by: gaylasue on October 17, 2011, 12:25:10 pm
I just opened my last booklet of checks.  I really hate to order more since I hardly ever write checks anymore but I guess I will anyway.  I like to have a some on hand in the event of necessity ~ lost debit card, ATM down, etc.  Do you still write checks for merchandise, bills, etc. or has it becoming one of those obsolete items...?

I write one out every now and then when I have no cash and pay day is the next day and something is needed badly..I use maybe 1 check a month. I've had my checks since 05 and still have about 3 book left

I like writing checks myself. Mostly, I write checks out for rent and bills so that I kinda feel like I still have some control when people take money out of my account. I don't use them in store though.

I hate them but every once in awhile they still serve a purpose that a debit card won't handle.

I can't remember the last check I wrote.

The only checks I write any more are my rent check and some donations to charities.  Haven't had to get new checks for 3 years!  :D

I write checks when I can't find a debit card or credit card, paying bills or if I want a more tangible record of a monetary transaction like paying bills that the recipient has questionable accounting practices.  I also write checks for kid's activities, charities and birthday presents. I also write checks to employees from my business checking account.  I usually only write checks when I am trying to keep better control of my own finances.  Credit cards and debit cards are very handy to keep in my pocket.

I only write checks if I'm giving a gift to my nieces or nephew. Other than that....all my bills are paid on-line. It's so much faster and easier than actually writing out a check and sending it in the mail hoping that it gets their on time and does not get lost.  I think actual check writing is becoming a thing of the past.  ;)

I don't rite checks. I either purchase money orders or pay using a debit card that i pre-load. No problems with bounced checks!   ;)

I write checks all the time to pay bills through the mail. I never use a check when making a purchase though. That's old school!!

Very few places take checks. I pay most of my bills online.
Even places like Walmart that do take checks, I still prefer to use my debit card.

Most of my bills are direct withdraw so I only write a few checks.  At the store I use my credit card
that I get cash back on whenever possible

My husband and I only have one bill we use checks for. If we could pay it online we would though lol!

I still have a few bills that I write checks for.  I prefer that over giving out my account or debit card info to companies.  I only use my debit card when paying for gas at the pump or when I'm out shopping because it's quicker to use at those times.

I use my debit card whenever I can rather than writing checks.

I write checks for donations to church and fund raisers when the kids are out raising money for school.

Yes, I still write checks.  I don't write as many as I use too but I still write them.  I know one day writing checks will be a thing of the past.

I only buy one box now, since I don't use them often. The doctors still want them as a form of  payment.....the hairdresser accepts them.

Nope, I don't write checks since I don't own one anyways. I been practicing writing checks when I was in school and I think its just a headache. I like to keep it simple and easy as possible to pay for something without using any checks.

Only if I cannot use a credit card or pay online.  It usually means one check every two months.

I, like you, write few checks.  Don't know if your bank does this (my credit union does), however, some institutions will print you off a few checks for your account.  That's what I have and I don't plan on getting/ordering a whole box as I don't use them.

I still write checks for a few things like my COBRA insurance or random things that don't take credit cards. There are still a few instances... I think I have written five in the last 4 months.

I guess I am old fashioned. I still write out checks!! Everyone that I write out checks to they always state that I can do it online. I just don't feel safe with all my information out there, that is why I still write checks.

I write checks but very seldom (I don't use cash very often either). Usually I use this if what I'm paying for (a trip) will not accept a credit/debit card option or if I'm giving to a family member or friend (e.g. birthday gift, wedding gift).

Yes I still write checks because that is proof of payment and I don't use the internet to pay my bills I dont trust it my daughter just had someone take money from her checking account by steeling her numbers off her debit card so that really scares me.

Unfortunately, you can always find a reason to have checks.
Title: Re: Do you still write checks?

I write some pyaments on check, like doctor's bills that are a one time deal and I prefer to have the proof of the payment.  Also I write the checks for the kids school activities, like PE Uniforms, lunch and any fund raiser or extra payment to the school.  Or any other payment that does not allow me to do it online.  But those are minimum, I write probably 2 or 3 checks at the most duering a month, everything else is done online or thru my bank.

I write checks when I send donations to charities in the mail, and for medical bills, etc. Most everything else I have them take the money right out of my account. I still have a lot of checks, and I'll probably never need to buy more.

Yes, I still write checks when paying my father for rent (I still live at home) and other specific cases in which the person or business I'm paying doesn't accept cards or online payments.  Still use cash on occasion as well - but only when a credit card isn't accepted.

Yes, I still do write checks the snail old fashion way as they are the best secure way to pay for things. I write checks to my friend whenever I buy wholesale items I use on a daily basis, otherwise I pay most of my monthly phone and credit card bills online.

I only write checks for our water bills, as they don't accept any other form of payment which doesn't have some fee associated with it.  Every other bill is done electronically.  Other than the water bill, I only really write checks for gifting in a card.

The only time I write checks nowadays are for birthday gifts. Checks are just horribly inefficient and dangerous for security and should be done away with completely.
Title: Re: Do you still write checks?
Post by: beckyguhlke on October 31, 2011, 08:44:46 pm
I hardly ever write checks. I write a check once a month for the rent and once a month for the water bill (cause they charge you to use a debit! ridiculous!) and thats about it. Occasionally if im ordering a magazine subscription by mail or sending money to family I write checks. If I operated a business, i wouldnt accept checks. I know that sounds harsh but I worked for a small business once and bounced checks was the biggest money drain there was. And even with lots of wasted time and money and effort, most of the time the checks were still never honored. Too much hassle.

I pay all of my bills with checks....groceries, mortgage, car, ins,etc...I fear that having a debit card leaves you open to alot of theft and over spending.  I know I sound behind the times, but if it aint broke, dont fix it. :dontknow:

I still use checks to pay my monthly bills. I am old school and just comfortable with the idea of paying bills online.

I do use the automatic payments for monthly bills where the amount does not change. Like mortgage, car insurance, etc.

I don't write as many as I used to but still have to do some.  I noticed that quite a few of the posts mention water bills by check which I have to do also or drive 20 miles to deposit it in their lockbox at their office.  Doctor, vet, house payment and feed store are others I pay by check.

My spouse writes checks, but I use postal money orders to order via mail.

When I get a check made out to me, I cash it and keep the cash.

When I order online, I use Pay Pal.

Any PayPal payments sent to me, just stay in there and I use it for spending, without withdrawal to the bank.

I write checks to my kids' music lesson teachers, the occasional medical bill (I pay most over the phone or online w/ a debit card), my charitable contributions to my church, and a few others that only take check or cash.
