Some people think it teaches them about responsibility but what happened to just being a kid? I mean its hard times I guess if its a need but if you dont need to why should parents make their young kids work?
-
i don't think they should MAKE them, but rather
encourage them to.
a part time job isn't going to kill their social life! lol.
if anything, it would improve it. affording to do more
things outside of the parents control, treating friends,
having your own car. i saw a job as freedom when i
was in highschool -- i'm a college graduate and haven't
been without one since i was 16.
would i sacrifice a saturday night to work so i could
afford those shoes i wanted? absolutely!

A student in high school and college is no longer a kid.
-
Absolutely. Parents should be teaching their kids to be independant from the beginning. From feeding themselves to walking to supporting themselves financially.
-
School should be their only job during the school year. If they want a summer job a few hours a week that's fine but I would not want my high school aged child working any other time. As for college it's their choice. I don't think it's ideal to work a full time job during the school year but it depends on their circumstances. If they can do a part time job without it not interfering with their studies then more power to them.
I didn't work in high school because I never wanted or needed to and my parents said school was my job. I didn't get an allowance but I didn't need one. In college I only worked during the summers because again my parents said school was my job and thankfully I didn't have to work. Kids have the rest of their lives to work and slave for a living.
-
Yes, I think it teaches them responsibilty. Life is not a free ride and they should be able to work and study..
-
I agree with Cloudsoup, working while in high school and college makes you more independent and buying some things that you want is great. I did , my kids worked also, so I think its a good thing even if you don't have to. :)
-
part time in high school, as long as it doesn't interfere with getting the homework done. It helps with self esteem.

I never wanted my daughter to work during her high school years. Her school work and high school years were too important to miss anything that would be regretted in later years. We were blessed that she didn't have to work for extra money. I didn't want her to work during college but she thought she needed more "stuff" than I thought was necessary so she worked for the extras she thought she had to have. Kids need to enjoy their youth while they can. They have the rest of their lives to work. Unfortunately in today's times, it is often necessary for a teen to work to help out with the family expenses. I am so thankful that I got my daughter through school before my good paying job was outsourced.

I think students should work when in high school and in college. In high school because it teaches responsibility; some may say that it takes away childhood but if they don't learn it their adult life with be filled with money issues. They should work in college so they can have their own spending money and help out with college expenses

I have a son that is in high school and I would rather him put his education first. If there is something that he wants to buy then he will usually do some type of yardwork to make the money. Education is first so he can get into a good college!
-
I wish i had had a job in high school. Really, what it comes down to is that a job is nothing more than a job. It's a way to make money. If you feel your child needs to make money, have them get a job. If you feel they need to be more responsible, give them chores that don't make them feel stupid. Have them take care of something you know they will enjoy, or at least get a kick out of.
-
If the kids are involved in sports, it is difficult for them to get a job in high school. Our grandsons were in football and it took most of their time. They did work during the summer. Now they are in college, one of them is in football and is not working this first semester. He will work after football is over. My granddaughter is also in college and is working every other weekend in the bookstore at her school. She gets half the money and the other half goes towards her tuition. Colleges are very expensive these days, especialy if you go to one that is not connected to a state.

Since so many scholarships today require so-called "community/leadership" hours, if a high school student wants a scholarship, they're better off not working and devoting their time to their classes and community service hours/club hours. If they aren't gunning for scholarships and want to work, let them work.
I believe if someone is a full time student in college, they shouldn't have to work unless they want to. Depending on the hours of their classes, work may not be feasible when compared to the research, study, or assignment hours required for some courses.
It should be their choice, not a necessity while they are working on their education.

Well, I do not know about during HS, my daughter was so busy with after school activities that she had no time to work during HS, now she is a freshman at a Community College, and shw HAS a part time job. Her #1 priority is School, but she works to pay for her school expenses like food, gas and car insurance, and it has taken a relief to my pocket. Now if she wants to buy something she just saves for it, and she is getting responsibilities as well. She took classes very early so she goes to school, does homework and then goes to work later in the afternoon, like 3 or 4 until close. She is managing fine.
I do not charge rent or food or anything else, but she has to pay for her car insurance which is very expensive and he car expenses, like gas, repairs and maintenance. The rest of her money is for her.
-
I think it's fine for them to have a job to pay for extra stuff like going to concerts. They should learn the responsibility but focus most on education.
-
I was forced to get a job while in highschool then when i had been there for almost a year my mom made me quit at 18 i loved it there but my mom wanted to keep me from a social life i had made. She told me she wished i never got that job but it was her who said to put in the application. SMH!!

i think they should it it would give them responsibility
-
Students shouldn't be forced to have a job while in school. If they can manage both then that's great but if the job begins to interfere with their school responsibilities, then i feel school is the priority.
-
I think you should have a job in highschool but just not alot of wroking hours it can be time manganament and hard to stay focus or even play sports. but my opinion is its up to the kid if they want to work. but in college yes i agree that they should have a job because basically you are an adult.

I don't think parents should make them but maybe incourage them.
-
Yes. I think so. I worked all the way (full time) through high school and college. I still did sports and extra curricular and was on honor society. It's all about priorities. I didn't watch tv during the week, and I had plenty of time to spend with friends on weekends or at school events. I think it teaches good work ethic and learning balance at a young age.
-
I think it is great if a student works while going to school. It gives them a sense of responsibility and some spending money. If the parents are having a hard time meeting the expenses of school then the student can help out. It is good as long as it doesn't interfer with their studies.
-
It doesn't just teach them responsibility but, it will also teach them to face the real world at a young age. I personally think its better to learn as much as possible when you're young. Your parents is not gonna live forever and they sure are not gonna do your share of responsibility all the time. I personally wished that my parent would of pushed me to work while in high school. I may have saved a lot of money by the time I graduated from high school. However, I didn't work and I graduated without saving or working for any money.

My son worked a part-time job after school to pay for his first car. We took care of the insurance, but he had to keep up on maint., gas/oil. It didn't hurt him one bit. I worked while I went to college and it didn't hurt me either. I also was on a half day work schedule my last 2 years of high school. I loved it and the fact that the money I made was mine. It taught me the value of a good days work and the "fruits" of my labors. How to budget for what I wanted, etc.
There's nothing wrong with teaching our kids a work ethic at a young age. Back in my day, you could get a work permit at 14 and my first job was (age 14) working as a dishwasher in a restaurant during the Summers in Lake Tahoe on the South Shore. I worked myself up to waitress and made quite a bit of money before each school year for clothes, etc. What kid in 1965 could make close to $30 in tips a day plus hourly wage?. I worked every Summer there before graduating. That experience taught me more than anything else about responsibility.
I passed that work ethic along to my son as he was growing up. Today he works for a Fortune 500 company in upper management, and they fly him all over the world. He is highly respected among his peers and gets promotions all the time. I see a whole generation today of those who don't want to work or do anything with their lives. School is important, but so is getting our children ready for the real world.
-
Absolutely work! It teaches you a lot of things; time management, responsibility, etc! I had to do it and I don't blame for my parents for making me either!!
-
I don't have kids this age yet, but however I have been told that my kids will work to help pay for their car, phone, insurance ect. I personally think that school is more important. So my fiance and myseld have come to the agreement that if they choose to work that's fine but if grades slip the job will be gone.
-
It can be good and bad. I have a younger brother who worked throughout high school, so he never had to worry about money and could spend it freely. The problem is that he rarely saved any and developed some poor spending habits. I hope he figures out sometime how to budget himself.
-
High school kids shouldn't have too. College students should if they need to work. Of course the parents might need some help.
-
:dontknow: i think it all depends? Some people have no choice? Others can just go to school? I think its better to just be able to go to school and not work. Now if your in high school you should get a part time job to get a better feel for a real world job.
-
i think as long as it doesn't effect their school work poorly then yes i would encourage them to work part time.
-
I don't see anything wrong with high school & college kids working. They don't have to work 40 hrs a week, but 10-15 hours a week won't hurt them and they learn some responsibility.
-
I worked all thorough all high school and college. My grades suffered through for it. However, I had to do what I had to do.
-
I think that it is better to have children concentrate on grades and sports during high school and college. I worked a minimum of three jobs (roughly fifty hours per week) during High School and college and had above average grades as a result. Had I not been working I would, most likely, have had straight A's. My kids are not working (one is a Freshman in High School) and are getting A's in every class that they are taking as well as maintaining a heavy sports schedule.
-
I think having a part time job is good for highschool aged kids. It keeps them busy and out of trouble, plus they make their own money to spend on what they want to do. Work teaches the value of a dollar, respect, honestly, etc etc.
College kids on the other hand are adults, so if they can get a job, they should so that they have some money to buy food other than ramen. ;)
-
I think it teaches them about responsibility ,they learn that money doze not grower on tree and if u want something u have do something to get what u wound and tnat is what u should teach them.
-
I think right now it's a good idea for kids to work. The economy is still very bad and if there is a job for those kids to have then they should take it. They don't have to work so much they can't sleep or get school work done but part time would be good. It does teach responsibility with time and money and manners. I work in retail and it's sad to see some kids come in and have no manners because the money and everything else is just handed to them and the parents don't care. Then there are the kids that come in and are surprisingly nice and well mannered and its refreshing to see and it's their families and work that teach them that.
-
I agree with gaylasue 100% kids have the rest of their lives to work let them enjoy there high school years and they can learn responsibilty with clubs or sports. If you have the means in college to dont work seriously most people from when they first get a job do not stop for decades why not take advatange you are a kid!!! And for those who say a high schooler is not a kid I dont believe that you are a KID!!!! and that does not last long !!!!!
-
I don't think you should make them work, but I think they should be given the opportunity to work, they do need encouraged, not discouraged. If theya re encouraged to work with something to look forward to then they will be better suited to get out there in a working environment.
-
Yes, full time, part time, either or.
It helps with management skills: monetary and chronological.
The thing that needs work is the tuition.
Right now it is impossible to work and pay for school/books unless you are going back for your second degree.
And tuition is the only thing that hasn't dropped in price in the last 4 years with this whole economic crisis.
And the government (federal and state) has basically given the universities the go ahead to keep raising rates.
At least here in Arizona
