Are people really that crazy about shopping on Black Friday as the tv ads tend to indicate? And how did it get the name Black Friday anyway? Why not call it Great Friday? Just a thought.

doesnt matter about friday, more and more of the stores have now started their sales on thanksgiving day. 10pm for walmart , 12pm for bestbuy , 9 pm for toys r us. (its for the childeren) . With all of the stores starting on thursday guess they dont give a damn about the employees and their families. I have seen the articles in the paper saying that we are using the employees that have said they would work and most are happy to do it.. I call BS on that because they are happy to do it, why because they want to keep their jobs thats why.. So lets just call it Black THANKSGIVING and forgo dinner altogether and just make it about the money like we have wit hso many other things... " sorry to rant garydh , but black friday has become ridiculous"

I wouldn't really call that a rant, abdyer. I think you're right on the money! No pun intended.

Black Friday got the name from being the time of year that most stores go from being in the red to being in the Black (i.e. clearing a profit on the books and thus red ink to black ink).

This is much better than another Black Thursday, (October 24, 1929), would be.

A little history about why the Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or are "in the black"

I was just looking at a pole and many times alot of people dont even participate in shopping that day they probably just don't have the money.

I'm not competitive enough to brave the crowds. I'd never camp out just to get a sale price. I like to pick up or make things throughout the year and by this time my list is at least partly filled, not that I have much of a list.
I saw on the news that one local man was camping out since 3 am Tuesday, at Big Lots. There were a couple other tents besides his. He however was setting up a new house and had an extensive list of needs. :peace:

Well thanks for the responses. I hope everyone here on FusionCash has a BlackFriday. In other words that FusionCash is giving you some cash and keeping you out of the red. Take care everyone, shop and be safe and have fun earning extra cash without the crowds.

I think its not as bad as it was in the 90's, especially with the recession, and then the second recession.
Any shopping, I think people prefer to do online, I know I do. Why waste the gas when you dont have to---or deal with the trampling crowds?
Of course, its not even limited to Friday anymore. Sales start Thursday now.
Just like Christmas music coming over the barrier now.
