How much is to much to spend on a prom dress for your child?

I spent $90 on my dress and had to get it hemmed, which cost around $50 more. This was a TON of money for me back in high school, but I never really went to any of the school dances. So, I decided I could splurge a little since it was my senior year. As far as how much is too much... I knew some girls that went crazy and spent $250+ on a dress. If you have the money, go for it.

I did not go to my prom. I know, I'm know fun.  My daughter is not even old enough to go but she talks about it all the time.  She is going to go to an Officers Ball for improving her reading grade and she has to dress up for that.  If I was buying her a prom dress I would try not to go over $200.00 for the entire outfit shoes and dress and hair and nails.  I probably even a little bit more unfair than that.  I would probably ask her if she knew anyway to pay for it!

That will vary with every individual family and their budgets.

Personally, our 3 girls did an awesome job of keeping their dresses in line with our budget.  Our youngest daughter even wore her sister's dresses.

We didn't do the whole "nine yards" of dress + tanning + manicure + hair salon + + + +

It can get to be a crazy big expense for a one night dance.
They did their own hair and nails.  They looked beautiful.

Go out of town and go to a resale shop so your kid won't be wearing the neighbor's kid's dress... you should not have to pay a fortune for a dress that will only be worn once.
