I need some ideas on some themes outdoors to take family pictures
-
The park, around a lake, playground, or maybe a pictures at a picnic, or going swimming.
-
the zoo

The park and the lake sounds more like a nice family picture. At the park you might have a waterfall or fountain in the background that will give the picture a nice view.

It really depends on what your family likes to do, where you live, the ages of your family members and the purpose of the photos.
If the photos are for your family history then they should depict places near where you live that your family likes to go and things they like to do. Including your home in the photos would be useful for future genealogists.
If they're to be more formal for framing or holiday cards then you'll need a scenic background such as a garden or a sunset.
Have fun with it and you'll get more natural expressions. Good luck.

I like easily identifiable landmarks or monuments depending on your intention, such as a bridge, a notable sign, building, etc. I would otherwise suggest a park, but sometimes that feels a little genric. What are the family pictures meant for? Is this for redistribution to the extended family or something else?

Id personally take pictures at the park, or at the beach for casual pictures...for formal pictures id be outside in a place that brings us together such as grandmother/gandfathers house...
-
fences are cool outdoor props...you &hubs could
stand together with the kids perched on the fence,
or everyone sitting on it.
in my opinion, family pics look better if you're not
ALL in matching attire... eek :sad1: but that's just
my opinion!

Outdoors near old farm buildings turn out to be great pictures.

It is always nice to take pictures at parks or out in the woods for something different. However, one idea that our family started was to take a picture in front of our house or where ever your home is. How often in later years have we said what did our house look like then or where were we living when I was younger. It is a great scrapbook or memory album photo.

I like your suggestion of getting a picture of your house so that in future years you will have it. I love to scrapbook.
I also like the suggestions given for family pictures to be taken at local points of interest. We have a State Park closeby with rock outcroppings and prairie grass.
