I know exactly what you are talking about. I went through this back in 2000 when my now ex, divorced me.He filed for divorce($$ issues) and I was a stay at home mom. I filed for disability 3 yrs. earlier. So when he filed,I have NO income whatsoever. But the county/state refused to give me ANY financial assistance. They required me to get in their W-2(work) program. Well I refused because I was in the middle of my SSDI/SSI disability battle. This would have messed everything up. Anyway, I eventually got child support and a little other asst. but I needed CASH. I lived on $376 a month for 3 yrs. ,until I won my disability claim.
I won't even get into the foreigners who would get cash right from the start. (because they could not speak English)

I know what you mean about how you feel that the state should help you if you are in need.  I lost my job and I tried to get food stamps, but they told me no because my boyfriend (who I live with) had a job - which by the way wasnt paying the bills.

Times are tough all over.  I was laid of 13 months ago and if it weren't for my boyfriend, I'd be sunk.  At least I had a good cushion at first so we were never in danger of losing anything.  The last few months I've had to get creative, that's how I found Fusion Cash.  So far, so good, I just hope to get work soon!  I wish all others in the same boat success and support.

Yeah I live in Alabama and the assistance hear sucks for 2 people u can only get $190 a month.  Well I don't get that because they say I make to much in child support sometimes I don't get that.  I lost my job in Dec of 08 and I am still looking hope it gets better.  I am glad I got a great landlord that is understanding and is trying to find things for me to do while I work. But wish everyone the best that is in this mess that is among us and God Bless.  ;D

Yeah I live in Maine and the assistance here for people isn't any better. I've seen more people than I can count, get cash assistance and lie on their paperwork, they'd say they were single and wouldn't list their spouse or partner even though they were making about 500/week. It makes me angry that people can just come to this country and get all kinds of benefits just because they don't speak english. Would their countries give us any kind of assistance if we were to move there? NO.

I have seen so many problems with the public welfare system throughout the years. Lose your job and need some help? Psh. Your W-2 from last years puts you over the limit for now.

What I find interestingly sad in this state is that with a family of three, you must make like $8.65/hr or less or you get absolutely no government assistance. So what if the cost of living makes it so that even the Tax Credit Low-Income Apartments are $800/mn for a two-bedroom and Section 8 hasn't accepted applications in two years....

I've made it a purpose to never deal with the kind of humiliation that several people I know have gone through. The system has always seemed to punish those individuals who try to better their life instead of staying in the dirt for all of their lives.

Hey I know how you feel.  My husband lost his job and I have 2 kids plus ones handycaped and they still denied us because of the income level.  Its not fair, some people cant afford to put food on the table, i think they have the income level to low.
