my fiance told me this the other day...will someone educate me? I feel like it's unfair because I personally did nothing to the other countries, so why if I go there would I be hated on?!

There could be several different reasons for this; ranging from unfounded bias, (a misperception that 'all Americans are lazy/rich/spoiled', etc.), to some sense of resentment, (which could stem from a variety of sources - the French used to "hate" Americans because we liberated *bleep*-occuppied France a while back, many poorer citizens of other countries somehow have the impression that they have it worse than the poorest American insofar as personal freedoms go and then there are the religious extremists who believe that putting pressure on America will gain some terrorist demands). A few foreign destinations aren't safe for Americans due to their propensity for kidnapping American citizens. Then there are those countries which welcome Americans, (or, probably welcome the U.S. dollars).

It's not you personally i think it's just what they associate with Americans (walmart, war, other bs). you know the same way some do with other races in your country...

walmart? wtf? lol
In addition to what falcon9 pointed out there are the more traditional reasons as well. It is easy to motivate people by dislike/hate and some countries use that method for control of their populations. It is one of the oldest and most effective methods available. We are an easy enemy to 'imagine' and because of our capabilities we can be made to appear as some ominous threat that must be openly opposed and resisted or simply despised (so that the people develop an instinctive diametric position to whatever position we seem to adopt). Then again there are the people just love to root against the winning team and we have been seen as that for a long time and so people would express animosity towards us (and would still be our allies when it mattered though).
If there is a group of people that hates us because of walmart (...seriously can't stop laughing about that...) then I think we should just nuke them as they are so mentally damaged as to be beyond any repair. Ha ha ha ... walmart ... *bleep*.
(note: My walmart humor isn't a dig at you mprud046, just to clarify in case of any confusion. It is just that was like an out there wtf is really going on type of thing that made me think of some of the insane things I hear from liberals frequently).

i think its because sometime in the early 20 th century, the u.s. decided it had the power and right to be the world police...which isthe same kind of thinking that royalty and dictators use, and i think that some people resent that americans have everything...in the 1940s there were no storage units, and now there are more storage units in the u.s then houses, even poor people here have more then in any other country.

If I'm not mistaken, that likely derived from two world wars. Unless letting power-hungry militarists run amuck is the better idea.
... and i think that some people resent that americans have everything...
That's called a functioning economy; which is shakey worldwide in many respects. Capitalism; no money, no stuff.

Most people from other countries have a perception of americans that they see in movies or TV, and they know we have freedom and can pretty do as we please with our lives. I'd be jealous of that too if I was born in a different place.

some americans are ignorant about other cultures thats one reason why... and if its hostile territory what do you really expect welcome wagon? lol ::) some people from europe are snobby too. so it just depends where you go.

My g/f is French and she said that they don't hate us there. However, she did say that French people, for the most part, have some stereotypes about Americans (like bad food and lack of knowledge about world events). *shrug*

I think it is our arogance and sense of entitlement. I have traveled 24 countries while in the Military and we as Americans think we are suppose to be praised by other countries, well alot of them don't. If you ever travel outside the U.S. I think you would see why!! They don't like our sense of entitlement, just because we are Americans. Even the Richer European countries don't live to the standard we do!! A friend of mine once told me a story - and this is true, she was born in Germany and Lived in Russia because her father was a German diplomat which married a Russian woman (this womans mother), she traveled back to St Petersburg in the late 90's, where she lived alot of her young life. She ordered a coffee in a coffee shop with Cow's milk in english, Russia was, at the time, Lacking in food supplies, alot of stores had empty shelves. The lady that waited on her was was overheard talking in Russian that these spoiled Americans think they can get anything they want, just because they have back in the US. Not knowing that this woman spoke fluint Russian and German. This Woman that I will call Natia, told the waitress on the way out - In Russian - I am American but, I was born and raised right here in St. Petersburg., Natia stated that the woman turned red with embarassment. This story holds true thought, We as Americans expect too much!!!

Chidren ae taught to hate at a very early age. It is hard for them to change.
-
Certainly stereo typing plays into a lot of this. Hate is a very strong word. I would say that many individuals have strong feelings in some manner about how they feel about Americans. Whether we carry a sense of entitlement or are spoiled. Ignorance plays into this. Some people are jealous, envious, and others are raised to just dislike anything that is different. You also need to remember that this type of judgement happens within our own country---how northerns might call southerns slow, or southerns call northerns rude.
-
I feel most countries like us. But those that have whole different religon then we do , do not like and all they want is the money that is poured into their country , which i think would be better spent in our counry.

Whom are these haters of America that you speak of, please be specific? I'm not certain, but atleast America has FusionCash to depend when I'm going 'drawn' :angel11: Maybe if they joined FusionCash they wouldn't hate America :dontknow: :angel12:?

I've had friends from other countries tell me their reasons for disliking the US. It mostly comes down to an unwarranted sense of entitlement to everything. And also a lot of our internal politics. They just don't understand the things that we do - or how we allow the government to do half of what it does. I've learned that there is a fair amount of resentment toward us because we don't speak up intelligently against our government to stop them from doing things that the rest of the world views as idiotic.
-
Because we're so privileged and have a lot of modern items.
-
Having been to over 80 different nations..I can tell you that for the most part, we are perceived as nice, well mannered people. There are exceptions though and those exceptions make news in those countries or get in trouble. Also, I have seen many tourists in other countries who act very foolish and rude in expecting the locals to make special rules and exemptions for them. Always remember...be courteous, respectful, and aware that you are not in Kansas (or whatever state) anymore....and you will have a good vacation experience.
-
I think a lot of it is because of the politics. We sorta police the world.
Also, I've seen many people act foolish in other countries, which gives everyone a bad name. Think of the people that cut you off while driving or that think they are so special that they should cut in line or whatever. It's more those people that we are compared to.
Plus there's also people who don't respect the countries traditions. Say you aren't supposed to show your chest in a certain country. Some people think it doesn't apply to them since they are on vacation. That doesn't mean the people there won't look down on you for insulting their traditions.
-
I'm american and i dont even like americans.lol. for the most part people here are way too cocky and think they are so much better than everyone else. hate to break it to you but we all are human and live on the same ground. it's called earth. Even the poorest countries have good things about them.

I agree with the entitlement and ignorance we think we are entitled to everything and we know everything and our way is right !!! Our way of life is right and everything else is wrong !! I think ppl have a lot of reasons to hate us and I dont want to write and essay....

While there are probably are a number of Americans who somehow believe they are "entitled" to this or that, there are significantly more people in other countries receiving foreign aid from the U.S. than our own people are getting. Are those people "entitled" to that assistance? Do people in other countries believe their way of life is the "right" way? These aspects of human behaviour aren't strictly "American" by a long shot. Perhaps if those in other countries "hate" Americans in their hypocrisy, such aid as is given to them by the U.S. should be rejected by those ingrates.

*clickers ~Aaahhhhhaahhhmmma, I think it's understood that Americans right now is not exactly on world's most favorite in the country list! Let see, current events; American soldiers peeing on dead natives, American soldiers caught burning in the trash the Koran, & a couple of days ago, a lone American soldier sneaked out & went to a nearby Afghan village & slaughtered 16 defenseless women, children,& unarmed men. Nope, I don't think we'll be on that like list w/other countries for a long, long, long, long, time.
I haven't traveled that much but what I've notice is if you arrive w/this huffy attitude natives will automatically hate you. My brother went to France, & he was treated fine.Of course, my bro is a people person & can pick up friends anywhere any language! He said, that they really where more willing to help when he picked up his French dictionary & struggled trying to speak their language. So, I guess he didn't portray that I'm American stigma the you need to serve me, speak my language even though I'm in your country & I'm the foreigner. So, in general, when you're traveling out of the country leave the negative American attitude at home. When you're traveling to a different country go w/the attitude that shows I want to learn about this country. Prepare before hand, read up on the country you're going to visit. Check customs, religion/beliefs,culture, etc. The best way to start getting other countries to like us is when traveling overseas become that representative for the US & demonstrate the good Americans.

??? I think it has to do a lot with our gov. Also when people in different countries see movies and t.v. shows they think all Americans are rich.
-
I think it's about how america is viewed by other countries. The media makes america look bad, and lets not forget the republicans that make this country look like rich pigs who don't care about anyone else. Thats because the republicans view the world as useless. Now the democrats are for the working man, the poor people. There is more homeless in this country then anyone really knows. And with the economy that we have right now is the result of another republican, george bush. The republicans would love to see all the little people either die off or become slaves.

Some might feel that if their brains aren't washed, they'll have a dirty mind.

That's just it, its not just about you as an individual, Its not a personal vendetta against you, its many years of conflict, religious differences, politics, power, ect. Unfortunately, it seems lately that the cycle never ends. The easiest way other countries choose to let Americans know they are pissed off at the US or other countries is by harming others who are otherwise oblivious to the unrest and conflict-innocents. And yes, It is unfair and cruel, but sometimes, when you reach your hand out to help foreign interests, like the US has done several times, past and present, they can either take your hand willingly and press for a change to all of the violence and death around them, or they can choose to slap it away, tell you that your very existence does not matter, and the fact that you are trying to help discusts them. In turn, they can choose to shoot you in the face, blow you up, take you hostage, threaten you and your loved ones, blow up buildings, and the list goes on and on. A *bleep* pointless cycle, indeed.
There are far too many folks in other countries that really dislike America and everything we are about, and there is nothing we can do about it. Such a deep-seeded hatred that has passed from generation to generation, its almost unfathomable to imagine. Peace is no longer an option. Its almost as if evolution has stopped, and understanding, empathy, and conflict-resolution has been bred out of their genes completely. Combined with one hell of a religious-jugernaught that is monotone and stedfast, the result is that compromise is seen as weakness, negotiation is a waste of time, betrayal and paranoia run rampant, and in turn, controlling others by fear and the threat of death takes over-forever.
Don't get me wrong, I stand behind our forces in the military, but military intervention, or not-you may be able to help bring relief from war and discontent to a few towns, but not an entire country or nation. Its just not that simple anymore. That is why the threat of being harmed when you travel overseas is very real and serious. Its Sad but True......... Listen to your fiancee', he knows of what he speaks.......

I don't understand your question, but Americans are people too, Aren't we? Who are the people you are referring too?
Your question: Why do people hate Americans?...... What are Americans? I would say people, right?
If people from other country hate us, maybe because of envy. :dontknow:

I have no idea, i am not american butbi dont hate american. Maybe different culture?

I used to think I had a photographic memory but then I realized it was just pornographic...
Everyone has a photgraphic memory; some just forget the film, (or digital storage medium). Others have a phonographic memory; it just goes 'round & 'round, (and sometimes, skips).

That whole war-with-Iraq-built-on-lies thing didn't help.

That whole war-with-Iraq-built-on-lies thing didn't help.
That actually did help (everyone over there hated Saddam and was glad to see him go). Iran loved it the most and you can see their regard for us has only worsened (well their government) so some associations you wish to make do not flow linearly.
-
could be the same reason a lot of people from other countries come here and feel hated, people do not trust what they do not know such a shame

"Jay" could be referring to generally nonlinear resentments. More and more it seems as though people, (not just in other countries either), are relying upon misperceptions as opposed to how things actually are. We've got the poor, the homeless, the hungry in the U.S. too ... every hear of other countries helping them? Maybe we should start 'resenting' those countries for an accurate perception of their lack of compassion.

Interesting subject. Americans are constantly associated with being spoiled, having their way all the time, and expecting to be waited upon hand and foot. We do have a very instant gratification society, and other Americans of course realize that and try to give us what we want so we can give them more money. When Americans travel to other countries, they may expect the same, or at least similar treatment. Cultural and maybe even political differences come into play, and we realize that the word "normal" is different to everyone. I think when most people think Americans are jerks they are thinking about cultural differences, maybe not taking the time to be as polite or what they see as polite in various situations.
Even though a lot of the negative views of America is warranted, a lot of it isn't. People of every culture tend to judge people who do not share their views. Not every American is a spoiled rich brat with every convenience, and to think that they are is extremely unfair. I think that everyone could benefit from a little understanding. When we go overseas we should do our best to understand what is expected of us to function in society. If we make a mistake, our hosts should be kind, and do their best to make us feel at home. If we care about the individual people, not where they are from, I think people from different societies would get along a lot better. :cat:

We all have bias and some of that is from experience and some is put in our head with the media. I read somewhere that when The Simpsons did an episode that showed Brazil and made fun of it. Brazilians were extremely upset with how they were betrayed on The Simpsons. Little did they know that the Simpsons is constantly making fun of all people including Americans. If all you have to go on is commercials and celebrity TV you are going to have a skewed image of American and the rest of the world for that matter. If you judge an entire people by its popular culture it will seem very shallow, spoiled, etc.. Too bad it is hard to change other conceptions of us once they are in place.

I seem to remember plenty of Muslims, as well as people throughout the entire world, who were pretty ticked off about it.
