Title: Free TV
Post by: handllucas on April 04, 2012, 06:02:45 pm
How many people out there still get use free over the air TV?
I have never had cable, dish or satellite. I just can not see paying for it when the ststions still have advertisers paying.

We never had cable till 1995. I think before that we had about 10 channels to choose from. Now we have like 200 maybe more, I don't know. I watch about 3 of this channels. If it was up to me I wouldn't have cable at all and I would just watch my favorite shows on line. If you know what you are missing just watch your favorite shows online and don't get cable because it is a big giant ripoff.

I think it depends on how you look at it. For my hubby and me, we have cable, but we cut back on other things. My husband referees high school sports part-time, so sometimes he likes to watch games on tv to practice making his calls. I like to watch tv, because sometimes it helps me unwind, however, there are times I could go without it and find something else to do.

I have free cable with my rent so I am lucky.  Last time I had to pay  for my cable was in 1995.

Of the 200 channels available the only thing I miss is live sports. Otherwise I watch everything on my computer. :)

I telecommute from home using a PC and get burned out, so I couldn't bear to watch TV on it.  Cable TV is way too expensive, but I've always had it.  I don't have the paid movie channels though.  At least my company reimburses a portion of my high-speed Internet bill.  I remember getting 2 or 3 channels with rabbit ears many years ago!

My husband and I never had any cable or paid t.v. Then we moved in with his grandmother to help her out. I made the mistake of getting roped into a 2 year commitment with a satellite company. Some days I'm happy to have it and most days I think of what a waste of money it is. When this contract runs it's course we'll be back to rabbit ears and watching t.v. on the computer.

I have cable TV.  It would surprise me if people still had free TV.

I have cable but they keep raising the price all the time.  I swore that I would never pay more than $100 a month for TV and internet but I haven't found a good alternative.  I'm still looking.  I had high hopes for Netflix but it was disappointing.

there are taped tv shows on the internet: Charlie Rose, PBS, 60 Minutes to name a just a few.
there are also a few t.v. offers in which case you can pay for t.v. on your P.C.
I found one that is a one time payment.
I will get stations around the world.
I am wondering when "UNWRAPPED" is on.
ARE there any new shows running?

we don't have any tv right now and don't miss it. My husband on the other hand misses it big time. But I buy or rent a movie once in a while and he is ok again.

I agree with the reasons for not buying cable, however, cable usually comes with wi-fi and internet so, my hands are tired.  Where I used to live cable was more expensive because, it was an apartment that contracted cable out which means the company (I won't name) monopolized their rates.  I could never understand why tv went digital other than greed.

When I moved out of my mothers house 17 years ago we had cable.  ... then we switched to dish and direct tv and dish again...than cable and I've had cable for bout' 2 years now.  Recently comcast went through some changes and now I've lost the basic cable I had in the plan so we are relying solely on netflix and rentals from the library and redbox.  I missed celebrity apprentice last week and realized...ok time for the rabbit ears.  You are absolutely right.  Way pay for something that you can get for free.  After dumping all that money on tv for all those years on stations I never watched I realize now... what a waste.

We have cable and I mostly hate it. There is 500+ channels and nothing. We maybe frequent 10 channels/ I wish we could have cable "ala cart" and just pay x amount of dollars for whatever stations we want instead of everything being packaged together.

Nooo. No tv at all. I mean, we have one (or a few really) but not hooked up to anything but a dvd player + game systems.
Mostly had Direct TV or no tv. Had broadcast once um around 2005 I think, when we'd just moved into town. Eventually hooked back up Directtv. Now nothing, although thinking of getting it again, if only because it's brainless - just turn it on for background noise and/or watch whatever comes on while doing stuff.
But it's easy to get stuff online - a lot of channels will even broadcast their shows online concurrently (the news for example) or just 8 hours to a week after it airs on tv. It just takes actual thought of "what do I want to watch" to turn them on the computer lol

Analog is a thing of the past-it's too bad anything resembling "free" is going extinct. I'm sure, in some way, we only have ourselves to blame for it; but I'd like to blame the government and my mother!

Satellite is expensive where we live in Colorado. We have DishNetwork, and got sucked into a 2 year commitment. We were paying $32.10 each month. We had planned to cancel the service on May 6th, once our contract ended. We were looking forward to it, but before cancelling, we called to see if they could at least lower the price. They did, in a fairly big way for us. They offer something called "The Welcome Package" for $14.95. You get your local channels and a couple dozen others. For us, it's all we enjoy anyway, and it's worth the price to have. So, we kept the service, at the lowered price. Good thing is, we not longer are locked into a commitment, and can cancel at any time.

I don't think we will, though, as we're getting excited for Football to come back this year! :)

I know there are plenty of ways to stream them to your computer, but I personally don't use the sites for that. I don't enjoy TV any more so I rarely watch iy, now my husband on the other hand always has it on! We pay for cable, too bad it isn't free.

For the most part it is almost impossible to get regular tv channels without some kind of cable service.  A few years ago we built a digital antenna for our RV and were able to get a few digital channels almost everywhere we went without having to hook up to anything.  I thought it was really cool that this was possible.  Even better the cheap "digital" rabbit ears will also pick up these kinds of channels for free as well.  And I remember finding online a digital channel guide which was pretty cool and you could put in the address of where you were and the possible channels would be displayed.

I had satellite years ago. Our family watched too much and it was a drain on our budget. We do use Netflix right now.

Right now we have a satellite dish, mainly as a convenience for my mom who is now 96.  She mostly watches the local channels.  I watch the local channels and a few others like ScyFy, USA, TBS.  I do a lot of DVR-ing (lots of Twilight Zone lately). and that's the part that works best for me.  However--and this is a big however--there is a whole lot of stuff that neither of us have much use for--shopping channels, sports channels (except during college football season when a team we want to watch isn't on a major network), kid channels (except for when nieces and nephews watch Disney).  I like having the access to lots of channels, but in reality we could get along pretty well without all the extra stuff.

I have had cable for years ... I just recently ordered an antenna that is suppose to pick up tons of channels for free.   I haven't received it yet but if it works I will be sure to post so others can try it too!

Well, bunny ears and such free tv is now illegal.  What is the problem with tv advertising?  If you are against using something that advertises then I don't know why you would use the internet as they advertise all over the place on hear as well.
