Title: Text language is killing the English language
Post by: ro901 on May 11, 2012, 09:25:57 pm
Call me an old fuddy duddy if you want to. I guess I am, but I just can't make sense out of a lot of posts when people are too lazy to type vowels or even try to spell words out. I know some people are typing on their phone and maybe they're paying for the text by the letter or maybe they just don't care about spelling. Guess I should just get used to it. Looks like it's what's coming. Dadgum, all the time I wasted learning English in school. What was the point? :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

It may very well be a result of what you mentioned, possibly not being as educated as others or, technologies like voice-sort-of-recognition software.  Sometimes I almost enjoy deciphering the garbled 'coded/encrypted' messages being posted; other times, I'm a schoshe less patient.

This new world is so non-relational....really!  People have more contacts than ever, but if they get mad, one click of the button and they are gone from their lives.  People can't even have a face to face conversation without texted throughout it!  So sad!  I hate the poor spelling too!!! Gone is grammar!

It is so sad to see the number of people who graduate from high school and college these days that can't read or write.  When I read Facebook and see posts from some of my teenage nieces and nephews who can't spell or write a sentence, it is pitiful.  Why is it so important to write or text someone and save time but then you can't read what they have written.  No wonder a lot of people have trouble getting jobs - they can't even read or write a paper.  They don't realize how important it is in the business world.

I agree but I also remember being a kid and writing cuz instead of because or cause, or dunno instead of don't know so in a sense it is kids being kids. Bonus thought they could grow up to do coding or courtroom communication using their awesome short hand lol some of the things I read just miss vowels ie. "Fsncsh is rlly a grt ste 4 ppl 2 sgn up 4" lol you know you could read that

Egyptologists had found that the ancient Aegyptian language didn't use vowels either.  This has sometimes lead to the 'creative' interpretation of translations into English.  Oddly enough, "St~Hn", (which was translated as "Set [an Aegyptian neteru] is Mighty" somehow became misinterpretated as "satan" to the hebrew migrant laborers of pharoahic times due to the lack of vowels.  That particular misunderstanding had some minor 'biblical' repercussions later on.

This means it could be somewhat important to understand what was actually said/written at a some point along the way.

I don't think itis helping this younger generation at all. They are really struggling in school on tests. Some are having a hard time just learning to read. My hubby teaches school and says it is getting worse. The kids keep trying text friends instead of studying . In our school they are banned during class. What ever happened to good old learning and paying attention in class. Please don't blame the teachers they are trying to help the students learn. Make your kids turn off the phones during school and study.

I think for a lot of kids it's not that they can't spell it is just quicker to abreviate something.  I catch myself doing the same thing!  :(
