Hi all.. we are a one income family with 2 kids.. 12 yr old boy and 15 yr old.. What is a cheap but great outing for the summer?

i agree with a camping trip those are always fun :)

If your children can swim then a trip to a beach, lake or swimming hole will wear them out. Some of my fondest memories are when I was a kid and doing just that with my parents and brothers. :)

Get yourself a tent, find a nice camping ground at a lake. Spend a couple of nights, and have some good family fun!

I agree with the others. Camping has been a great deal of fun for our family.
If you can't go hiking, finding a good hiking park can also be good.

Personally, I'm not big on camping but I love a good hike or trip to the beach in summer.

Where are you located? I live in Central PA area and write a column on low-cost and free things for families. If you're near me I can give you ideas.

It depends on where you live really. I live in Atlanta so I like to look at this place called "Atlanta on the Cheap" and the latest article is "5 Ways to Spend the Weekend on the Cheap in the ATL: June 1-3, 2012". They do other cities as well though. Maybe you live in or near one ? http://www.atlantaonthecheap.com/

I don't have any kids but I would guess that when I do have kids I would think about what I considered a good family outing to be when I was a kid. As far as that goes, the only thing that comes to mind is going out to a baseball game.
