Although I haven't played as many RPG games as when I was much younger, I'll look at some of the more recent ones to see what isn't yet available for developmental inspiration, (being a game designer, I don't want to duplicate the efforts of others).

I don't play as many RPGs as I used to. I am more of an MMORPG/RTS/Survival Horror kinda girl. I played quite a bit of FF back in the day though.

I've looked into a few MMORPGs lately, (tried the BattleStar Galactica one, for instance), while in the process of assisting to delevop an "Honorverse" game under author David Weber's auspices.  I don't know if you're familiar with his Honor Harrington sci-fi series or not however, he's a stickler for staying within cannon in regards to what he wants to see in a game based on his series.

My gf used to play WoW until I noted an obscure observation that "WoW" is "Mom" upside-down; something that Dad apparently enjoyed.
 :o

There's an inherent flaw in every MMORPG that persists from their inception until today.  I won't mention what that flaw is because, having you guess is more fun.

I enjoy the Final Fantasy series, but haven't played the more recent ones on the console. I also enjoy the Elder Scroll series, Suikoden (hoping for another installment) and Kingdom Hearts.

Lmao ! I should actually login to WOW and make some potions and flasks for tonights raid. I am not good at guessing games.  :'( Even if I know the answer when someone asks me it flies out of my head as soon as I am asked. It drives me crazy!

I hate the Sims.  I guess I just don't like playing "god" to people's boring lives...real or imaginary.

One RPG game that I just started playing here recently is Conquest of thrones, it helps to take the edge off the day and helps me to relax.

Sims is not an RPG. You are not going on some kind of adventure.

what is rpg?
RPG = Role play games
They are games where you play as a character, and go on a journey/adventure. You could level up (meaning you get stronger) after multiple battles, and accumulate a type of currency you could use to purchase items such as weapons.

I use to be hooked on Last Chaos...played it daily.  My son plays WoW and Diablo and a few others...he has tried to get me interested in some new games, but just couldn't really get into them...and I just don't seem to have the time to play lately....mostly a winter activity as I don't do much outside time when the weather gets cold.

When you say Ragnarok, are you talking about the MMORPG or the old school rogue-like? When I was in high school, I used to spend hours playing the old rogue-like Ragnarok; last year I happened to run across it being talked about and opened up DOS-Box to play it once again. I also like a bunch of other rogue-like games such as Nethack and more recently Elona.

For the graphical RPGs, I am a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series. I think that the story and its entire universe is very well constructed. With Morrowind and Oblivion, I actually would plug in a bunch of my Celic MP3 music and get totally absorbed into a Renaissance-like time period. I also really enjoyed Torment; this game was much more about the story than just the pure action (which can get old). Diablo is OK, but I can't spend too much time on it without it getting boring from the pure hack n slash nature of it (although D3 is a little better with it storyline). Same goes with Titan's Quest and any of their ilk.

I don't really like MMORPGs since I'd rather do things for myself (I even dislike certain classes -- like druids or necromancers -- that use "pets" too much). But I have tried Guild Wars, WoW, and Runescape.

Xenogears was the best game in my opinion.  I wouldn't recommend it though just due to the fact the graphics are so outdated people wouldn't probably be able to enjoy it.  Definately the best story-battles-progression of any game I ever played.  Played a bunch of mmo's, but I'm in a holding pattern on games for a while due to work.  I'm looking at finding one later this year or first of next year to subscribe to for a year.  Wild star is the only one I've heard of that looks halfway decent that's coming out later this year.  Neverwinter is suppose to release an mmo, but perfect world picked it up and perfect world sucks.  Secret World is suppose to come out in a few days.  That game looks sweet but I'd rather pick  up a game from the start so I can play it for roughly 2 years before I have to move on.  That one would be worth checking out if anyone needs a summer mmo to switch to.

Actually the Sims qualifies as both a simulation and an RPG. It is not the usual RPG game but it does in fact involve role-play. I know most people will say it is not an RPG based on the fact it isn't like traditional RPGs such as Zelda, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star or Legend of Mana etc. but that doesn't change the fact that it is a role-play style game.

Although there's a huge hint in an episode of Southpark in that regard, instead one could always ...
