Title: Should school be all year round?
Post by: smithjcsdfw on August 13, 2012, 07:34:14 pm
There are some educators in the DFW area that are proposing a year round school system.

I think it would be a good idea. Either that or start earlier and/or end later. Then the kids could get through school faster and have more time to eat lunch! I don't like that we teach our kids to rush rush rush..it's not healthy!!

Some schools are already all year round.

My son's school goes 11 months out of the year. They take a longer winter and spring break and cut the summer break to just July.

yes! year-round schools are proven to be better for all the kids I know that attend! by not having a huge break for summer, more information is retained, and they don't lose multiple weeks for refreshing what they learned the previous year. plus, with parents working - children that stay home during summer vacation, aren't doing much, except most likely sleeping, eating and playing video games or on the computer!

I love my summer breaks....and kids do well with them too....but all that time off really seems to knock the remembrance out of them and it seems as though they spend the first quarter reviewing...what a waste of time!

Coming from a state where there was a traditional school year (September - June), it was hard getting used to the "year 'round" schools in Arizona.  Although these kids get more breaks during the year than the traditional school, it's murder when they have to go back before July is out and start a new year.  Remember, this is Arizona, and the heat in July jumps to 116 degrees.  In other words, turn your oven on 400 degrees, wait for it to hit that temp. and then just open the door, LOL, THAT'S what Arizona heat feels like in the summer!

I think school should be all year round. I go to a private catholic school and my school is not all year round. I know that if you're not going on vacation then your usually bored most of the days and want to see your friends. School is the only way I see my friends all the time other than sleep overs and parties. And anyway your in school then have a break for winter then your in school again and then spring break and then you have summer so you might as well go back to school then a smaller summer break. Just my opinion.

No. I take summer as a longer break (than winter break and spring break) lol. And it works out fine!

i think there is pros and cons to both i mean its better year round for kids they forget a lot in 3 months so they probably retain more info better less time reviewing and if they get little breaks may be nice but also giving kids summer off gives kids time for family trips and stuff too so idk have to try it out and see how it goes

Having a year round schooling would probably increase the retention of a student's lessons better, but at this age I think they still deserve a well extended time away from schoolwork too.
