Title: Let’s talk electronics.
Post by: MichelleHW101 on August 30, 2012, 12:10:50 pm
I just bought a New HP Officejet Pro 8600 plus.  I rate this about a 4 out of five stars.  It is deffiately not the must have printer of the year unless you use it strickly for buisness purposes such as scanning, copying, faxing and printing documents, spreadsheets or powerpoint etc.  Any slick paper, such as photopaper it has an extremely hard time grabbing.  Then when it finally does grab the paper (and this only happens if the paper is stacked all the way to its fullest compasity and I only get that by sticking a couple photo papers sheets on top then loading as much plain white paper undereneath as will fit in the tray) and prints the photo it comes out decent enough but there is a streak or line every two inches across the snapshot.  This doesn’t happen when a photo is printed on plain white paper.  Program used doesn’t matter because I used powerpoint for both.  So if looking for a professional grade printer this is definitely the one.  It prints so fast papers nearly fly out.  Words are crisp and clear. No streaking or blurriess.  Scans are so near perfect they don’t look like they are scanned.  Copies so vivid you can’t tell which is the copy or the original.  Wireless signal has picked up both computer and laptop every time either one or both are turned on.  Double sided gadet attached to the back has never failed.  However, if you are looking for a personal all-in-one save your money and looked for something else because no one wants lined photos.  Clearly when best buy advertises this printer the photo sticking out of its paper tray is not one it printed itself.

Thank You So Much, I'll keep that in mind when my goes out.
As far as electronics go i am the geek of the family! LoL!

I knew that windows 8 was coming out soon and I had a laptop with Windows 7 on it.  Now I loved the old Windows XP.  It is my favorite Operating System.  I had bought a laptop at the tail-end of Vista.  I hated Vista with a passion.  So did a lot of people which is why Vista didn’t last too long.  I was afraid that Windows 8 would be all like Vista and while windows 7 isn’t as great as XP, I do like it.  So because I knew that I needed a new computer I made sure I bought Windows 7 a few months before Windows 8 (now out) was to arrive.  I am so glad I did.  I just don’t get why Microsoft has to mess with a good thing.  I mean that XP to Vista was awful.  Windows 7 works.  Why mess with it?  Yah, I know. Money.  Like they don’t have enough of that already.

It kinda made no sense to me that people were buying tables then having to buy the keyboard attachment.  I mean if you wanted to turn your tablet into a laptop why not just buy a laptop.  Then the Ultrabook just came out.  Now that makes sense to me.  Hp has one that the screen just detaches from the keyboard (it’s touch screen).  Levno (I think the company is called) makes one where the screen slides over the keyboard to turn it into a tablet.  Intel makes one where the screen swivels inside its frame so you can just flip the screen over on its back to turn it into a laptop.  The next laptop I get will sooo be one of those.

I am really tempted to buy an Ipod.  I have a Zune MP3 player (had to get one because at the time it was the only company that made one with radio stations).  The new Ipod has radio stations and it’s at least up to 32GB.  Zune doesn’t make the player I have anymore and with your smart phone doing everything now they hardly make players anymore.  Even shelf stereo systems are hard to find now.  Everything they do make is for an Ipod so I may eventually have no choice.  I might need to get one before my MP3 player dies and its at least four years old now.

So I’m old school.  I still play on a computer rather than hook up to my tv.  The only problem with that is the computer games coming out now (on the rare occation when companies still make computer games) is that its all hidden object games.  I guess because all the first person games are going to PS, XBox etc. the computer games have to do something different to still be ‘out there’ rather than obsolete (which they actually are).  It’s sad in a way but I guess I don’t blame companies.  I mean with computer games once a new operating system comes out and you are stuck buying a new computer those games that worked on the old system won’t work on the new one.  Look at all that money wasted.  I was basically lucky to find a few of my favorite games reissued for a new system.  Of course I had to rebuy them but at least I got them.  With an XBox or PS you just buy the game that matches your system.  No matter what year you buy the system you don’t have to worry about it not working on it.  (Unless the game disc scratches or something.)

So the first thing I do when I buy a new computer or laptop is always change the settings.  First it’s the screen savor and then the colors.  I use the same screensaver and colors I always have no matter how many machines I change out.  It’s for that familiarity.  If I see the screen savor and colors I always have even though its on a new machine it doesn’t feel so much like a new machine.  It’s a comfort, like an old friend. While the machine may be a couple days old because of the old ‘worn out’ colors and screensaver it seems like the old machine.  It’s a mental thing….or maybe I’m just weird.

So I have a pair of Bose speakers.  I want to say they are well worth the price but I kinda don’t really know what I was expecting.  What really makes the Bose is that you are getting a stereo system sound in tiny speakers.  Not disappointed or anything but if Bose didn’t make their stuff so tiny they would totally be over rated. Because I don’t have the space for a streo surround sound system, Bose was worth the high cost.  But of you have the room, then it is just a waste of money.

So when I got my new computer I already had a wireless mouse and keyboard.  I have to say with the way the room is set up I definitely had to go wireless.  The new computer is wirelessly connected to the internet and the printer.  While I believe they are as secure as they can be, I just can’t go back to wires which might be better.  I can’t stand wires and with my printer I have both a computer and laptop.  My old printer was such a pain in the butt.  I mean it worked great but every time I had to print I had to unplug the wire from one machine and plug it into which ever machine I was using at the time.  Same with the internet.  I hated it.  Now I don’t have that hassle.  (I just have to worry that one day the ‘signal’ between the computer and device (be it the router or printer) might not work.  As for right now they do so I’m not gonna worry until it happens.

I purchase a new printer-Lexmark Pro715.  It is great and everything is always so crisp and clear.  I love it and the ink cartridges doesn't cost a lot.

I just bought a pair of Ultimate Ears 350vm noise-isolating headset in-ear earphones by Logitech.  I was honestly undecided whether to go with noise cancelling or sound isolating.   Now noise canceling you can get as cheap as 5bucks.  Sound Isolating start at a buck more but to get both that starts at 20 dollars.  Basically Sound Isolating and Noise cancelling to the same thing (let’s you hear your music rather than exterior sound) except Sound Isolating is more powerful that’s why anyone of those type need a battery.  Ergo it’d be heavier which might cause it to constantly fall out of your ear.  I basically had a pair of 32 dollar Sony’s that didn’t do either and since Sony doesn’t even make the kind I had anymore I decided to ‘upgrade’.  One may argue that Isolating is better than Cancelling but honestly I think it comes down to the company that makes it not type of product.  Not having enough for the Bose and not even sure if I would like the in-ear bridge design (which is made for runners so it won’t fall out) I went with the Logitech.  Basically, all Noise Cancelling does is give you a couple pairs of earbuds in several different sizes (material its made from I don’t think matters) and you have to figure out which one is an ‘airtight’ fit for your ear (otherwise it’s no different than buying a regular pair of earphones.)  That airtight fit is what gives you the Noise Cancelling which basically does not cancel all background noise.  It does the same thing as if you were sleeping with earplugs.  It makes the external sounds quieter which makes you able to hear your music without having to turn up the volume.  I have to say the Logitech is a better sound than the Sony (which I was so happy with I had gotten two pairs when they still made it) and after finding the right earbud that gave me the airtight fit it was like I was hearing my music for the first time.  There were background beats to songs I never heard before even though I’ve heard the songs a hundred times.  I have to say I’m happy with it and the Noise Cancelling is good enough for me.  I just think it’s a little too overpriced which I think is due to the fact that UE is used by professionals (which they make a point of stating not only all over the box, but they give you a little booklet which has pictures of professional musicians like Seal using them.)

Logitech usually makes pretty solid equipment for PC stuff.  I have a Mic and keyboard they've made.  Plus, some speakers for another PC.

I have windows 7 on both my laptop and computer.  I have an htc windows phone that comes with 8.  Now there isn’t that big a difference going from 7 to 8 however the biggest change are the tiles.  You no longer have icons for things anymore you have tiles.  They are literally square blocks with the old fashioned icon in the middle.  Not that it’s a problem, but it really only works on a touch screen (like my phone).  Keep in mind that is why windows 8 commercials are all shown with someone using a TOUCH SCREEN.  You can use an ‘old fashioned’ screen (i.e. non-touch) but keep in mind that your cursor is still stuck acting like your finger.  (I.E. you’ll have to move your cursor around to the tile you want rather than just pushing the tile you need or holding the mouse down to ‘grab the screen’ to slide it over if the tile you need is not on the main screen.)  It’s so much easier to just swipe with a finger to the left or right to get the screen you need and just touch the tile you need rather than maneuvering a cursor.  So if you don’t have a touch screen I recommend you DO NOT upgrade from 7 to 8 or if in the market for a new computer save your money until you can buy one with a touch screen.  Otherwise you’ll just end up reverting back to the old classic screen (which you can) but that defeats the purpose of windows 8.

I have to say I have to prefer windows 7 to 8 not because it’s more complicated because the truth is it’s just as easy to use.  The problem is windows 8 is only compatible with a touch screen computer where as 7 can be used with any computer or laptop (even though the comercials state otherwise).  Though that being the only flaw, windows 8 isn’t a bad upgrade from 7.  Though windows 7 is not as great as XP was, Vista is still the worst operating system Microsoft ever made.  So glad that system didn’t last long.  I never found anyone who had a good thing to say about Vista and personally getting stuck using it myself I totally understand why.

I recently had a home theater system put in by Best Buy.  Total nightmare.  The old entertainment center I had in its place was (obviously) still there and they had no intetion of setting up the new one because they weren’t allowed to move furniture.  I told them they had no choice because the one they were putting in was going in that very spot.  The geek squad guy was said, “yeah we have a choice.  We can choose not to instal it.”  That’s when I snapped, “Well this was the day scheduled for install.”  The second geek squad guy said, “Let’s just move it out of the way.”  I think what really pisses me off was when you go to the best buy store buy the stuff then set up the scheduling they tell you something entirely different.  The first time I went into the store they told me, “Oh they take the furniture away.”  The second time I went to buy the rest of the stuff and set up the scheduling they told me, “They don’t take the furniture because they don’t recycle that but there should be no problem if you just ask them to move the furniture piece.”  Then the guys actually come and nearly refused to install anything because we had something in the way.  Seriously, best buy needs to change their policy.  Either allow the geek squad guys to move furniture or tell customers when the schedule is set up that whereever your having the install is being set up (especially if it’s like mine where it’s not just a new home theater but also a tv and tv furniture assembly) that they can’t touch furniture.

I don’t understand why when you set up a home install from the Best Buy the people doing the scheduling tell you one thing and the installers tell you another.  I was told that because it was a tv/home theater system the geek squad guys would not leave until everything was up and running.  Well I wanted all the sound to come from the home theater system.  I was told that all I need was an optical digital cable (which I bought).  Then when the installers came they looked at the tv and said it doesn’t even have that optical/digital outlet.  So to get what I wanted (the sound out of the home theater speakers) I needed a ‘y’ cable.  He didn’t have any in his truck which meant I had to go to best buy and buy one.  That also meant they hooked eveything up but didn’t test to see if anything actually worked (Which in the store they told me the guys don’t leave until everything does work.) He told me where to plug in the y cable once I got it then left and symple said, “call if there are any problems.”  Well I go to best buy get the y cable and plug it in the holes he told me.  I got no sound except when I turned on the home theater player.  None from the cable box or the vcr.  It’s a mini stereo headphone jack so I plug in my headphnes from my phone.  I still get no sound.  I look at the set up intstorunst and the hole the geek squad guy wanted me to plug into was not the headphone jack.  I plug it into the actuall headphone jack and still no sound.  I call the Geek Squad guy and tell him I still ain’t getting sound and the he he wanted me to plug into was not the headphone jack.  He then asked me what that hole was.  I told him, “How was I supposed to know?” He said he’d come back after his next install.  I get off the phone with him and realize the geek squad guy manually turned off the sound to the tv.  I go crazy because the tv did not have instructions so I had to push buttons until I got the sound back on.  Then I got sound when I had the cable or vcr turned on.  What actually saved the whole sound set up was the tv did come with a headphone jack.  Which I was just going to buy a set of Bose computer speakers and hook it up to the tv though the headphone jack anyway.  I got suckered into buying a whole theater system and the only surround sound I get is when I use the blu-ray player the speakers came with.  Otherwise cable and my vcr are straight right and left speaker anyway because the tv didn’t have that outlet needed to conect to the player’s speakers.  If it didn’t have the headphone jack I was stuck with just sound from the tv and for that I didn’t have to waste money on a surround sound system.  I could have got just a regular wifi blu-ray player.

So I got a cordless craftsmen circular saw and because I’m the person that always reads the instructions before I use something, that’s what I did.  Now to adjust the blade depth it was just giving me this whole complicated step by step thing.  There was a picture but it wasn’t any clearer than the words.  So I loosen the depth *bleep* like it said and found the ruler in the back but I couldn’t figure out anything beyond that.  By mistake I grab the base and yank down.  That’s when I see the slider to the base going up and down along the back ruler.  If all you had to do was loosen the base, then move it so that the piece of the blade protruding out is either shorter (if you pull the base down) or longer (if you raise the base up) all in adjustment with the ruler in the back of the saw then retighten the depth *bleep*—why didn’t they just say that?  I just measureed the depth of the wood I was going to cut with it then looked at the dept ruler at the back of the saw and lowered the base until I was close enough to the ¼ inch beyond the wood depth for no kickback.  It was so simple I got more frustrated trying to figure out what the instructions were trying to say than actually adjusting the saw.  Maybe that’s why most people don’t read instructions anymore.

reading the operating instructions to the craftsman’s cordless circular saw I have to say it’s pretty sad when have to list common sense things like hold the saw with both hands, never put the saw on the ‘cut off’ piece etc.

I got a hdtv but as soon as I plugged in my brand new Toshiba dual vhs/dvd and stuck in a tape it was just awful!  I mean it was like looking at a water color or like someone threw water on the screen.  The picture was completely fuzzy.  The installer gave me some crap about how the vhs tapes only run 480i the HD TV has like 1080i so your gonna see every flaw and connecting by a coxial cable is the lowest video signal etc. I told him to put back my old dual vhs/dvd player.  You know what?  The picture (though will never be as good as an old standard tv) was only slightly fuzzy and definitely passable enough to watch.

Was going to change my new dual vhs/dvd player out for an HD upconverter model but after reviews online that an upconverter doesn’t really make the vhs tape look better on my HD TV I figured I’d save money and just get the HD upcoverter when my player actually goes.

I hate best buy.  Ever since they remolded there is absolutely nothing in that store.  I finally broke down and decided to get an ipod.  I’ll need a new stereo system anyway and the tape deck has been replaced with an ipod because no one uses tapes anymore.  So I went into best buy and of course there was no one there to ask in the actual Ipod MP3 section so I went to customer service.  There was no sales representative available but there was a geek squad guy.  He asked if I needed help and I said I had a question about the Ipods.  He replied, “Okay.”  I said, “Everything is going to Ipods and the self stereo systems alls say Ipod but I don’t know which one that is.  Are they all the same?”  We walked over to the shelf stereo systems and he started opening them.  He told me they are for the classic but the 4th generation Ipod Touch is the same exact size so they can interchange with whatever machine takes the classic.”  I said, “Then I’ll get the 4th generation.”  He said, “Well, the 4th generation is really on its way out and if you just wait a few months the new stuff will come out made for the 5th generation.”  That when I told him, “Ok then I’ll get the 5th generation and just wait for a stereo.  See, I have a Zune MP3player which I really love.  The problem is nothing is built for it.”  He asked if my stereo had an auxiliary jack.  I said it did.  He replied, “You can run an audio cable between them.”  I replied, “I already do, but an Ipod you just plug into the machine.”  That’s when he understood why I wanted to buy the Ipod and went in the back to look for it.  I waited about five, six minutes.  He then came out, passed me saying, “I’m still looking.”  I told him okay.  He disappeared again then he comes back out another five or six minutes later with a sales associate and said, “I got good news and bad.  Which one do you want first?”  I said, “The bad.”  He said, “The 64 GB we don’t have in any color except the black.”  I shook my head and said, “No.”  He then said, “The 32GB you can get in any color you want.”  I asked, “Well can you order the 64 from your warehouse?”  He said he’ll have to check so I followed him back to customer service.  He went online to the best buy website (which I could have done myself from home) and started to order me the 64GB in the color I wanted.  I took pink because I didn’t care for the silver and the blue was iffy.  I asked him while he started to order, “Do you not have the 64GB because the 5th generation is brand new?”  He actually stopped typing up the order and turned towards me and said, “No, about 50% of the people that come in are happy with the 32GB.  Only 10% really buy the 64GB.  Most of them that want that just buy the Iphone.”  I replied, “Most people aren’t replacing a 160GB MP3 player with it.”  That’s when he finally stopped pushing the 32GB and was happy to order me the 64GB.  I mean really?  Why do they push people to buy things they don’t really want?  And they clearly hate it when you go into a place knowing exactly what you want and they can’t sway you to change your mind.  I tell you, it really makes me sick.  It should just be, “we don’t have it, let me try to order it.”  NOT “We don’t have it, buy something we do.”  It’s like the old Christams movie Miricle on 34th Street.  Except in this case it’s B.S. at Best Buy.

Really don’t like the Apple’s software for the Ipod verse Microsoft’s software for the Zune.  I have a Zune Player.  I bought one just as the Ipod craze was kicking in.  My younger brother opted for the Ipod.  Since I need a new stero and the tape deck was replaced by an Ipod dock I decided to finally break down and get one.  I went with the latest model (the 5th generation Touch) rather than the classic (which I never liked) or the 4th generation touch which can go into an Ipod dock designed for the classic.  My problem with the software is that you cannot manipulate the albums the way you can in the Zune software.  Both load an album by Artist, which generally wouldn’t be a problem, but about 90% of my albums are by various artists.  So I wind up with twenty song files of the same album, each with one song rather than one album with twenty songs by twenty different artists.  In Zune when I get twenty different files I can just grab the album I want and merge it with another.  I’ll get the option yes or no if I want to merge.  That way I can just create the album I want rather than like with the Apple where I’m stuck with twenty different song files because each song is by a different artist.

I needed a camcorder for years now but it never failed that when I had enough money to buy one something else always came up. So one computer, two laptops, one MP3 player, one IPod, two cameras, one phone, three printers and two speaker systems bringing the total to about seven years later (today) I bought one. It's a Sony HDR-CX 220. I went to best buy this morning & sales rep said I lucked out because five were bought yesterday so only two were left in the store. I get it home & immediately went to turn it on & got nothing. Already having that experience with my IPod I knew I had to charge the battery. That's when I trouble began. It only comes with a USB cable with the manual saying some computers not being able to charge it. I grab my rocketfish USB universal wall charger and start charging the camcorder battery. The charging light comes on like its supposed to but the wall charger after a half an hour is hot. Having burnt out my old mp3 wall charger from my IPod I knew that was bad and unplugged it. I then plugged the camcorder into the computer. Both started reading each other but the charging light continued to blink. I look in the manual & it says a full charge is two hours. So I left the camcorder in the computer for two hours but I was suspicious because the charge light was blinking the whole time. When I unplugged the camcorder I was able to turn it on and found out I was right because the dying battery symbol was on the screen which meant it was only charged when plugged into the wall. I looked on line and Sony says to plug it into the computer others said they charged it with their smartphone wall charger. I grabbed my extra one and plugged in the camcorder but like with my first wall charger it burned up. I ran to best buy. First sales person claimed he never heard of a camcorder not coming with a wall adapter and went to find me a powerful wall charger. While he was gone another sales person came to me and asked if I needed help. Normally I say that someone already was but instead I asked if she was familiar with the camcorder (I was standing in front of it & pointed to it) she told me she was. I explained the battery was only charging when plugged into the wall but every charger I use gets hot & she told me that particular model & the one next to it don't come with wall chargers but I could buy a battery charger. It plugs into the wall & the battery slides into it. So I bought it but then when I brought it home I found that the battery charger does not charge the NP-FV30 which is the camcorder battery. I ended up replugging the camcorder into the computer but this time I took out the memory card. Battery charged just fine. I’m going to keep the battery charger and & buy the recommended replacement NP-FV50 battery which it will charge.

Yesterday I bought the QuietSet 8 speed oscillating tower fan by Honeywell. Went out this morning to cut front yard and tear out weeds. Only out there and hour but came in soaked in sweat and burning up. I collapsed in front of the fan after turning it up to only the sixth setting and within two minutes I was cool. So worth the seventy dollars I paid for it.

I’m pissed at sims.  They released Dragon Valley which is an expansion pack but the problem is they didn’t attach it to the medieval sims which is what they should have done because that’s where it belongs they attached it to sims3.  Then to make you spend even more money the only way you get certain bonuses is if you have other sim3 expansion packs with it like you only get the weather stone if you have sims3 expansion seasons and supernatural.  I have medieval and I would like dragon valley but I really don’t want to waste all that money on three other sim games just to get the fourth.  Again why did they attach that to sims3?  It’s medieval and should have been an expansion to Sims Medieval.

Why can’t game companies like Electronic Arts or any software company for that matter make stuff like they used to?  You put in the disc, it loads completely then boom your done.  I bought sims 3 and I haven’t even played it.  I spent two whole days I can’t get back just downloading updates.  What did people forget how to make programs?

Somebody wanna tell me why as soon as I finish installing the apple update for Itunes hit finished it immediately spirals into another checking for updates thing?  Then I have to wait a few seconds (which isn’t bad but still) for it to tell me there are no new updates and close on its own.  I miss the good old days when software was put out complete.  You just loaded the disc and once it installed that was it.

Rift updates once a week.  I remember when I first loaded it the face symbol in the upper left comer didn’t even work.  It allows you to lengthen or shorten the facial features of the face you created (now once the update for that particular part of the game was updated).  I don’t get it.  I know gaming companies have deadlines (everyone has deadlines) but why can’t people just make software complete anymore?  I understand ant-virus software such as Norton or McAfee updating because new virus’ always come out but things like PhotoShop, Avery Design Pro for making labels, Magix music maker—what’s their deal?  Okay I’ll give you Itunes because new music comes out all the time but a regular program?  I can’t even due the update for Design pro because I did once and it removed all the regualr labels (which I guess people don’t use anymore) and just left weird like Ipod sticker type lables.  I had to reload the orignal program to get back the orginal labels.

On my Ipod I read the update first to know what changes will be made before I uplode the update.  I’m almost sorry that I updated the RPG name’s app I have.  I miss the old white one where you scrolled like the time for the alarm with a blue clear like thing.  Now the races do scroll but it’s yellow background which I don’t much care for but I guess because it’s for the phone as well the white would be hard to see.
