Rachel Maddow tore into Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on her Monday MSNBC show for his odd remarks about airplane windows.

Following an emergency landing his wife's plane had to make last week, the governor took a moment on the campaign trail on Monday to comment on her safety.

"I appreciate the fact that [my wife] is on the ground safe and sound," he said. "I don't think she's aware of just how worried some of us were."

Romney continued, "When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go exactly. And you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft because the windows don't open. I don't know why they don't do that, but it's a real problem," Romney said.

After running the above clip of the Romneys, producers cut back to Maddow at her desk, seemingly unenthused.

"It's a real problem that the windows don't roll down on airplanes? Is it also a problem that guns don't shoot backwards through the barrel this way? Or that diving boards are only really ever mounted over very deep water? Why don't the windows roll down?" Maddow asked.

She added, "I don't think he was joking because he couldn't possibly be joking about his wife almost being in a plane crash. You can't joke about that, especially with her standing right there," Maddow said. "So has he never seen Goldfinger?"

I just think about all the idiotic things people would do if you could have the windows open. I can imagine little kids trying to lean out of them to see better and throwing things out.

I would really love to assume politicians are joking about some of the things they say but the fact that they're serious and have such power is rather frightening.

I think the plane would depressurize ?    or go out of control.

Pretty much what everone has said lol. Think of how many people would be endangered if a lunatic just decided to open the window, everyone would suffer.

:BangHead: Americans please consider this example of pure stupidity. Do you really want to hand this moron the keys to the white house?
Hello, common sense states that if you have open windows in an air plane & somebody opens it, the pressure alone will suck that person & persons near by through that small window; strong enough to rip limbs to squeeze that body through! Not only will people die b/c air is being sucked out the pressure of being in high altitudes can crush organs or get the bends which divers experience when de sending too fast in the ocean. Your blood literally starts to form into bubbles & those bubbles starts to pop & that's when you're deep sh-t! The only way to be saved from the bends is to be placed in decompressed chamber.

I really don't think Mitt R. is fit to be the next President! If he can't even understand the simple concept of air pressure when the air plane is in high altitudes....it's too scary to think of giving this moron the job of commander & Chief! Fellow Americans, save the world don't vote for this retard for President!

If this Idiot wins, then I know for sure the Mayan prediction of the end of days is true! :crybaby2:

Or...you know...dying before they had a chance to do anything idiotic.

Is this a for real Mitt quote? Sometimes I just don't know. It's gotta be from The Onion, or some other parody, right? Right?? Someone that stupid can't have made that much money and be running for president. Right???

This appears to be another classic case of things being taken completely out of context.  After reading more of the circumstances in which the comment was made, it is clear, he was not saying this seriously.  This is a great example of why I never believe any of those over-the-top "scare" political ads (from either side) without fact checking everything myself against the source.

I watched the footage and I really can't be sure if it was supposed to be a joke or serious. Either way it doesn't seem like a funny joke to make light of the fact that his wife could have been seriously injured or killed in a plane accident.

If he was trying to tell a joke, he did a TERRIBLE job of it. Anyone who has any common knowledge of science gets it, but you have to say it in a way that's clearly showing humor. Romney doesn't have much going in the personality department, so he really bombed that one.

OK, but why can't you open the hatches on a submerged submarine?

OK, but why can't you open the hatches on a submerged submarine?

You can if they have screen doors and you have religious faith.

you would be sucked  out of the very window you are seated next to, as would anyone else in the plane

Can't tell if this is a joke response or not ;) Classic example of exactly what's going on here - joke taken out of context sounds moronic, lol.

I loved this post from the Washington Post: "Pro tip: If your strategy to turn the presidential election around relies on Romney’s sense of comic timing, you might want to prepare a Plan B, as well."

OK, that was meant as a joke.  Not a very complex joke, but you obviously didn't get it.

Additionally, submarines are not "pressurized," as you say, the pressure comes from the weight of the water outside the sub.  The deeper the sub, the greater the pressure.  Subs, especially modern subs, don't require any pressurization from inside the sub, in fact, if you choose to research the subject, you'll find that there can sometimes be such an overpressure inside the hull of a sub that crew members can get blown out of the hatch when it's opened upon surfacing, if they're not careful.

Air becomes so thin at 10000 feet that airplane cabins must be pressurized above that altitude.

Did you really ask that?  ???
I was thinking the same thing.

You can't take anything too seriously. Romney knows there are oxygen masks on an airplane.
If the windows did open, there would be way too much wind; things would be flying around in the airplane.
It would be a MESS.
An airplane is not a space ship.

Kids might try to climb out or items might blow out, particles from outside might blow it and it can get real dangerous. Plus its loud.
