I am livid! First off, I think that the whole school uniform bit is crap. Garland ISD claims that the choose uniforms because of gang relatedissues yet guess what their chosen unifrom colors are..red and blue (gang colors) The school district that am urretly in and have been for the last 4 years decided to adopt the uniform policy ths year. It has caused more problems for me than you can imagine. First, the company that I worked for for 5 years closed their doors one week before school started and left me unemployed, with no money to go uniform shopping. My kids have tons of clothes but now none of htem are good enough for school! I have been hand washing and hanging uniforms out to dry every day just to get by. Now, my five year old was sent to the office because his shirt was untucked! REALY??? He is five, and shouldn't you be more concerned about his ABC's than his shirt being tucked in. At first, I thought that the schools were geting a kick-back off of uniform sales, but now I think that it is just an excuse to be lazy and get out of doing their job! If they focus on my 5 yr old and te fact that he didn't perfectly tuck in his shirt after the restroom then they don't have to focus on the fact that half the kids are failing TASK and other necessary tests and being held back every year!

Well this situation seems like it could use some angry parents. Form a group of like-minded individuals, march into that school with the parents who disapprove and demand they stop this crap.

So far I'm a one man, I mean woman army, and it doesn't seem to be doing me any good. Picthforks sound great any other time of year bu I'm afraid that we are too close to Halloween right now...they will think Im in costume or playing a prank and I will fork em for real!

Well, you could imply that "satan" is really female, (some suspect such already), and start a petition to repeal school uniforms on the basis that requiring such conformity is not conducive to learning, nor does it have any impact on "gang colors", (if they're going to go that route, they can and do use hankerchiefs and gangsigns). Worth a try?

Well you could always go the more easy route and just talk to the principle and say that this amount of policing is ridiculous and you're extremely offended your kid would receive such treatment over something so simple. Stuff like that can really get on the faculty. Especially if more than 1 person is complaining. Either way, couldn't hurt. Keep us all updated!

When my child was in public school, I did not mind the uniforms for reason's being that it was a form of unity as in no kid would look different from other kids. Kids and bullying are a big thing in schools. No kid should be bullied because his parent can not afford to dress him/her like the others. Nike shoes or these expensive clothing like Ralph Lauren or Gap, Old Navy etc. Plus for low income families it made a way for them to afford clothing and also if they have a few kids they can pass it along to younger siblings. My son came into public school when they were already doing uniforms so i did not have a problem. When we are at home or in public areas he is very well dressed even if I have on some jeans and a tshirt. My son is in home school now because of bullying so I know no parent want their child to be bullied, its the worse thing to happen to a kid at such a young age when they mind is learning different things, one of those things should not be cause he/she looks a certain way. Bad enough he was called a *bleep* and I and my dad had to explain to him what that was about.

I think it all depends on personal preference and age groups. Elementary school students probably shouldn't because learning fundamentals is top priority. Grades above would seem to take uniforms in a better way. I know that many teenagers worry about how they look and what they are going to wear. If everyone in the school wears the same stuff, there will be less distraction and judging.
-
I understand your comment and I agree on the part of less judging for high school students, but even there is a big problem. Even in elementary school there is judging because kids now days are learning bad manners and habits at a young age. You would be surprised of the knowledge of things that young children have now days. Im still surprised that young children are using race calling names when they should be just playing, having fun and not engage in things of this nature.

I THINK IT IS A GREAT IDEA PRIVATE SCHOOL AND CATHOLIC SCHOOL HAVE BEEN WEARING FOR EVERY WHY PUBLIC SCHOOL
-
I grew up in parochial school and wore uniforms or twelve years. It did keep things simple and kept costs down, but it didn't prevent me from being bullied. :(
I can see where it'd be expensive if you were prepared for your kids to wear regular clothes, then the school decided to go with uniforms, but I should think they gave you warning. :-
I disagree with the idea that little kids should wear street clothes and high schoolers should have uniforms. Our middle schoolers are the most obnoxious kids in town. That age seems to need to be reigned in. >:(
I agree that a five year old not getting his shirt tucked in right isn't reason enough to send him to the principle. He's still learning. Making a little mistake like that doesn't deserve the shame of being sent out of class. Sounds like he has a lousy teacher. :bs:

I was never a fan of school uniforms myself, but they aren't going to change the policy no matter how much the parents hate it. Most schools have a uniform donation program where people donate outgrown or unsued uniforms at the office - which are donated (annonymously) to families that can't afford the uniforms. Call the school and ask about this. Since your school just implimented the policy, they might not have them yet though. You can try thrift stores as well. You can find uniforms from a lot of schools there, and if the school doesn't require their logo, only the right color, you can get the clothes pretty cheap.
If the school doesn't have any, and the thrift store is not an option, call the school board and explain the situation to them. They should be able to provide at least two uniforms for your children. They can't very well deny a child access to school because the family has fallen on hard times. They must have a program to enable the kids to be allowed in class.
Just remember that whoever you are talking to did not write the policy and is doing their job for probably a lot less than they deserve. If you remain calm and don't let your fury show, you should get results. It's hard, but try not to yell at the person who answers the phone if they don't have an easy answer.
-
I think there are noble reasons for instituting a school uniform policy such as preventing bullying (based on income and clothing style) or decreasing class distractions. But like you said it is not right when 5 year olds are punished for having their uniform a bit messy. How is anyone supposed to learn if they are so distracted by keeping up their uniforms. It sounds like the school is pushing the policy too far.
-
Look at it this way school uniforms does keep it simple and keeps all the kids dressed alike. The poor kids will not be teased or picked on because of the type of close they are wearing to school.

Hi there, neighbor! I live in Ft. Worth. My husband works at Daisy Brand in Garland.
I agree with you about more important things to worry about in school than an untucked shirt. That is crap, however, when we moved here from Hillsboro, we put our daughter in a Charter school which meant uniforms.
I am a penny pincher, so first thing I did was go to Goodwill. She is 6, so it doesn't matter if her clothes are new as long as they don't have holes in them. Anyway, I love that she wears uniforms, now. I don't have to buy clothes like I use to. I buy new uniforms (from Goodwill) once a year. It has been a huge savings on my family. There is no competition between "rich kids" and "poor kids" either.
It will get better. I promise. Hopefully, you will come to like it as much as I do.
-
We used to live in a district where my kids had to wear uniforms. I was all for it because they could get ready for school in record time without having to choose their outfits in the morning. Plus, they were dressed nicer than they would have otherwise. :)

Falcon9 is right on! Seriously? If there is a chance at less violence because kids have to wear uniforms I am all over it. The percentage of violence in parochial schools is considerably less than public schools and they are required to wear uniforms. Uniforms insure that kids aren't wearing offensive clothes. My children go to a school where kids are sent home for having banners on their t-shirts or skirts are too short. This judgement call wouldn't need to be made if uniforms were in place. I care about my children and my son is somewhat boisterous...I am seriously thinking of sending him to a parochial school.

I can't say it hurt me wearing uniforms to school. I really liked it, but i learned to make my own at an early age. I started sewing about the ae of ten. Made doll clothes for my little sister and girl cousins. I learned to sew on my grandmas old tredel machine. It didn't sew very fast as i had to peddle it. But i learned. My boys had to wear dark pants (could be jeans) and white shirts. They wore western shirts. I made them also. One reason is they were so tall and thin i couldn't find reular shirts to fit right. I could get right size but the sleeves were about 2 inches short and so were the tails. Most of the farm and ranch boys wore western shirts. Yep you guessed it we are from the west. The clothes they wear now are awful. holes and short skirts where you can see their rears. I don't see the pride in that it is showing off.
-
Clothes are meant to serve a purpose. The fact we are putting so much emphasis on what someone chooses to wear only shows our own insecurities. As long as someone is wearing clothing that serves is basic functions than anything else (designs, color, and the like) are superficial, and any problems that occur are a result of some other underlying symptom and should not be blamed on the clothing itself.
The problem with school uniforms is that if they are implemented because of bullying then there is an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. We should be focusing on the problem of bullying, not wasting time with school uniforms.
Lets look at it this way: If we ban school uniforms on the basis of bullying then we also are implying that the cause of that bullying is the clothes itself. It ignores the fact that there are other reasons people bully. If we ban the clothes we are essentially blaming the clothes on the bullying. What this implies is that the people who wear clothes should be blamed for being bullied (which is of course blaming the victim.) The reason clothes are being banned is simply because its an easy target to avoid having to deal with a bullying problem ("Our school bans clothes, so we are doing all we can to stop bullying." which of course leads to ignoring the problem rather than solving it)

School uniforms is a controversial issue for me. It is good because people won't have to worry about what to wear since they have set clothing everyday. There would be less judging on who has good clothing. It sucks because I don't think students should be obligated to wear such things. If a girl wants to look fashionable, then I say let her. It will make her confidence go up.
-
there are pros and cons to the uniform issue at schools--i like the fact that all the kids look the same and i think it makes the school look more professional but when teachers are more worried about whats on a child body then whats going into the brain--that becomes a problem --it got so bad here that we had to have a meeting and now we don't do uniforms anymore!!!! now it seems the kids are learning more and the silly crap of the shirt not tucked in or no belt is gone
-
I work in schools that have strict uniform policies and all it manages to do is put the focus off of learning academics and waste time "correcting" the behavior. I work in one school that doesn't allow any jewelry. I work in another that has no policy on belly shirts and mini skirts, but hell hath no fury if your shirt's not white! A third regularly sent Kindergarteners to the hallway for having untucked shirts! They are costly and one of the schools I work at does not have the students change for gym so by Friday many of the kids stink.
-
I think all kids in all schools at all ages till High School. I think school uniforms don't signal out some kids because they are poor. Both our children wore uniforms to school, and the only expense we had then was the begining of the year buying the uniforms. Usually 2 pairs of pants, five shirts, and 2 sweaters, but it was up to us on how much we bought. When they were in a school function they all looked the same, and there was no name calling or bickering.. I am for the school uniform

I AM SORRY THAT U R SO FRUSTRATED WITH UR SCHOOLS NEW UNIFORM POLICY. I HAD TO WEAR UNIFORMS FOR 10 YEARS ITS SUCKS AND UR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT THEY R EXPENSIVE. BUT THEY DO SERVE A PURPOSE. AT LEAST THEY DID WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL. AND THE PRIMARY REASON WAS ACTUALLY GANG ACTIVITY. ALBEIT I DONT KNOW WHAT UR CITY/TOWN IS LIKE BUT I CAME FROM CICERO AND GANGS ANG GANG RELATED ACTIVITY WAS A PROBLEM. AND PLEASE KNOW THE SCHOOLS DONT GET KICK FROM UNIFORM SALES. THE DETTERANCE OF GANG ACTIVITY IS ONLY ONE REASON THEY INSTITUTED THE POLICY. I DO THINK THAT SENDING UR FIVEYR OLD THE OFFICE 4 AN UNTUCKED SHIRT IS A LITTLE MUCH. I MEAN REALLY HES 5.

dude i can understand ur frustration...and yes its bs i agree. sounds like a horrible school...but hey u dont have to get school clothes just more uniforms next year...some say uniforms can save u money later...same thing everyday less to wash too..idk praying it gets better for u

I see that for some schools they need to have their students to use uniforms. If all students look the same then there is no pressure put on the kids to wear name brand clothes.

Great solution. Lets force students to wear clothes they don't want to wear so they don't feel pressured into wearing clothes they don't want to wear.
Amazing logic you have there.

School uniform you always know what you will wear to school each day. Keep you focus on learning. I like the idea.

School uniform you always know what you will wear to school each day. Keep you focus on learning. I like the idea.
My school never had school uniforms, and I never had this problem. The idea presented here is that children should not have any free time, and should be 100% dedicated to learning and learning only, and that anything that can get in the way of this 24/7 learning process is a necessary evil and should be controlled.
Otherwise, a child would (and should) have free time and thus the fact that they choose to spend that free time choosing what clothes to wear shouldn't affect their school work.
How about this: We should give students choices in their lives since it teaches them the negative and positive aspects of their choices. This alone can teach them more about what real life is about more than anything else.

Yes my girls are on uniforms and it has cut down on some of the bullying. the kids who can afford to "DRESS" do and then look down on the ones who can't like my girls. the high school uniforms are more strick then the elem. the 18 year old has to wear either black or kacki bottoms then black, white, or red tops but they can't wear black on black and they ahve to be collared shirts. the 10 year old can wear black, kacki and navy pants or the dresses with white, navy (or light blue) and gold(or another shade of yellow)on top. but if you have a money issues like we do or if you have a child who is hard to fit (I.E. thin as a rail but tall) try going to good will or some other thrift store. the 10 year old is going right through pants because of how tall she is getting. she only weighs 62 but she is already about 4'8" give or take.
-
I think school uniforms should be mandatory. The children look professional in their school uniforms. Second of all, wearing school uniforms prevent students from competing by wearing expensive clothes.
-
Yes this is a two sided coin. I can find agreement with both sides. It is like gun control. There are good points on both sides. I wonder if there have been any actual studies that would support one side or the other more?
