A mother who owns more than one weapons with a son who had some mental issue. What makes this story even disturbing; the son had access to these weapons. I believe citizens in this land should own only one weapon. The weapon must be a small hand gun. My true belief is that no citizen should carry weapon in this country except for government personnel.Perod.

I don't feel that this is going to help the situation at all. The issue is bigger than mental illness and gun control.

I agree that the mother made a poor choice of having weapons with a mental disturbed person living there. For the rest of your opinion I disagree. We have the right to protect ourselves. I bet you hated it when the teacher punished the whole class for the actions of few. A small percentage of the people are doing these evil acts...

There is such a stigma associated with mental illness. People still think it is soemthing you can manage on your own, or it is all in your head so to speak. Most insurance has considerable less coverage for mental illness than other more "medical" illnesses. Awareness about the fact that mental illness is medical could go a long way into reducing the stigma and making insurance coverage cover all illnesses. More people die each year from depression alone, than cancer, yet depression is still viewed by many as "mind over matter" or weakness, rather than the proven brain based disorder that it is.

Not every mentally person is going to go shoot people. the constitution states there shall be no infringement on the right to own guns and most people would not want there protection depended solely on the government. Perhaps we should also take away peoples right to own cars, knives, ropes, fuel, matches, etc because all of these have also been used to kill people as well.

The psychiatrist put him on drugs. [second mistake]
Those Psych. drugs have SERIOUS side effects, [including violent tendencies] as we saw in the Colorado theater shooting incident.

Thats ridiculous!! To think that somebody that would want to kill isn't going to be able to get a gun because of gun control. Thats scarey to think people think that way!! :bs:

There is something very wrong with a society that thinks that is is "common sense" to punish everyone for the crimes of a madman. Connecticut has very restrictive gun laws, but that didn't stop the criminal. So how will making bad laws for the whole country work any better?
There are a lot of uses for guns besides murder. You never hear about the million or so cases a year where firearms were used to prevent crimes, especially home invasions and rapes, mostly without a shot even being fired. Even though it wouldn't have made a difference in the school shooting, preventing decent citizens from being properly armed is an open invite to criminals to commit their crimes without fear of getting hurt.
As far as "assault weapons," the looks of a gun don't make it any more or less dangerous, or affect the uses of it. Many of these bad-looking guns are used for hunting, and other legitimate uses. and there are many good-looking guns that are far more powerful.
"High-capacity" magazines? It doesn't take much longer to fire 30 rounds from one magazine than it does to fire 3 ten-round clips. It only takes a fraction of a second to change a magazine. Plus, bigger capacity mags jam more frequently than the smaller ones. But some people, like myself, prefer the bigger ones for target practice, since we can concentrate on the shots and follow up, and keep shooting when we are having a good run, without worrying about changing the clips so often. Unfortunately, I live in NY state, which only allows 10-shot clips, so just when I start getting good with my pistol, I have to stop and reload, and get set up all over again. (I need to buy more mags, but for now I have to keep reloading).
There is also something very wrong with a society that can't see through the dictatorial ploys of the government. Only a tyrannical governemnt needs to be afraid of an armed populace. In fact, the primary reason for the Second Amendment was to protect the people from tyranny. It is despicable how many people actually go along with the government and willing want to put themselves in chains.
I agree that that mother was not being responsible having all those firearms in the house with a mentally ill son. But why should the majority of responsible gun owners be punished for the irresponsibility of the few? Maybe if proper care were taken of mentally ill people, this wouldn't have happened, because he would have been in an institution.

Automatic weapons are made with one purpose in mind- to kill. They have no business being in the hands of the general public. I also feel that there should be stricter gun control at the federal level.

Do you watch the news and see the loads of guns that come into this country illegally? We can't stop people from coming into the country illegally. How the hell are we going to stop guns? If the guns get taken away from everyone except the military and police, that leaves nothing for me to defend my home and family. And since the criminals aren't going to just hand over their illegal guns, that will leave the criminals to do whatever they want. They will know the "good" people don't have guns, so what would be stopping them from breaking into anyone's house.

I disagree about the automatic weapons issue being in the hands of the general public. I am the proud owner of three automatic weapons and I plan on buying more. Everything you make illegal you are making it that much easier for criminals to get there hands on it. Look at prohibition back in the twenties when alcohol was illegal for the GENERAL PUBLIC as you say. It was easy for the gangsters and under world criminals to get their hands on it and make a killing off of it.

I agree. Same thing with illegal drugs. They made those illegal, but look at how much of it circulating today.

I dont agree to take my gun rights away because of the irresponsibility of a parent who couldn't control her son. I don't care what anybody says these kids don't be that crazy they know exactly what they are doing. The kids watch to much video games, television and listen to this different artist that are portray negative and violent images, brainwashing your children. Ban the television stations and the radio stations (filling your kids head with the nonsense) not the guns. Everybody has a right to depend themselves from harms way

Harsher gun laws + The fact that criminals don't obey laws = DOES NOT COMPUTE.
However I agree guns should be controlled, but you shouldn't ban them from the public. Don't punish responsible people because of the idiots. Just make it harder for the idiots to get guns.

I don't know why they keep saying we need gun control, why aren't the laws that on the books being enforced. Just another way of the government wanting to control those that have a legal right to own them. I do agree that we don't need assult rifles, but to each his own. But i can guarntee if someone forces their way into our home he or they will be shot.

I do agree. I don't know why people have right to own guns afterall it happen in school shooting, mall, and movie theaters......will it prevent happen in the future if the still able to own gun??

Take away guns and people will find another weapon to use. The same day as the Conn shootings, a man went on a rampage with a knife in China. The man stabbed 22 children and one adult. While there were no fatalities, since 2010 in China, there have been about 20 fatalities of children by knives.

drugs have SERIOUS side effects alot of mental health medication. It dont have the side effects that are listed on the bottle, It seens like the govenment makes it that way.

People don't need guns to do a lot of damage if they really want to. There have been rampages with knives, machetes, semi-trucks, and bombing attacks with homemade bombs made of things such as fertilizer. It's literally impossible to make every potential weapon inaccessible to anyone who would use it for harm and utterly irresponsible to deny the average person the tools of defense. I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said, "Those who would trade freedom for security deserve neither."
However, I was a little surprised to learn of a rather large loophole in current federal gun control laws. I don't personally own a gun, but it was my understanding that a person who wishes to own a gun must pass a background check. This, presumably, eliminates (or at least drastically reduces) the possibility that people who shouldn't own guns (such as convicted felons or people who may act out violently as a result of mental illness) won't own guns. Imagine my surprise when I learned this is only true of people who purchase guns through a licensed dealer, but roughly 40% of gun sales are through private sellers, and no background check is required. Learning information like this makes me believe it is very possible to restrict gun access for people who are not supposed to legally own guns anyway without compromising the rights of everyone else. But a poorly thought out knee jerk reaction won't make the situation better.

Automatic weapons should be banned from regular Citizens of all age. The Right to Arms must remain, god forbid that the government becomes a tyranical one, and take away all your rights.
