THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PERFUMES VS. COLOGNES?? :dontknow:
-
I would think perfumes are more for women, and colognes are for men. However, now anyone wears any fragrance they want. Also, I smell perfumes that smell more like colognes. I don't know what the difference is molecularly.
-
No difference just people call women fragrance perfume and men cologne

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PERFUMES VS. COLOGNES?? :dontknow:
Well, perfumes have a lighter scent, that is why perfumes are worn by women. Colognes have a stronger, more masculine scent, therefore, men wear colognes. This is what my grandma told me because I asked the same question years ago! lol ;)

Used to have a manger who made this stuff for a hobby. And I paid for some material for a guy to concoct some stuff to sell. Colognes although not only just for men are single scented with a low concentration of aromatics or essential oils almost nothing just enough. Perfumes have the strongest scent and last longer sometimes four times as long as cologne, and may be as high as one third of several aromatics to oil or alcohol. (the ratio or aromatics to alcohol or oil)

I really dont think there is any difference except usually the gender that uses it.
-
I think they are exactly the same thing, just different names for different sex's.. There a re some pretty strong perfume's out there.. Was in a store the other day.. and smelled women's perfume.. except there was no women near me.. But I probably could have followed the scent to find her.. :dontknow:

I agree that perfumes are for women and colognes are for men. I think also that colognes are not as strong as perfumes. Also, the scent for colognes is more
suited to men.

Well when I think of perfume, I think of females using it and when a man uses a type of body spray, its usally cologne.

Interesting - it does seem that perfumes are much stronger, though their makeups are probably similar

Purchase some good perfume and notice the price versus the amount and you will see a big difference. Colognes are for women as well as men. In this country many are marketed to men. When I lived in Europe I saw the difference easily. Places like France, the perfume capital of the world you will see the difference. Although Egypt is where it all began. When My brother was in the service he used to purchase undiluted aromatics from the middle and far east.

It usually has to do with the concentration level of scents. Without knowing the actual concentration and level percentage, their hierarchy goes something like:
1. Perfume
2. Eau de Perfume
3. Eau de Cologne
4. Eau de Toilette
With perfume being the strongest and more concentrated out of the bunch, then with more added water (eau), the concentration level diminishes along with their lasting effect.
The way I see it, "perfume = everybody from all the way across the room, notices when you enter", "eau de perfume = people will smell you within 5 feet, and will keep smelling you after you're gone", "eau de cologne = people will notice what you're wearing by standing next to you, shaking hands or passing by next to them, fragrance will remain in clothing after wearing them", "eau de toilette = subtle fragrance, you will have to hug, kiss, or cuddle with somebody for you to have a good smell at it".
It also depends on the quality of the brand, and quality of ingredients used. Usually a good brand name, bought from a reputable source will adhere more to my remarks rather than a knock off.
Source: Own research while trying to get the right fragrance for myself. Ended up choosing "Eau de Cologne", great compromise between strength of smell, and long lasting effect.

Their makeup is similar but, where cologne will be made from one aromatic. Perfume will be made from three, so called layers. The makers of cologne will use that one aromatic and add 97% to 90% alcohol or oil. Perfume will be the three aromatics with like only 70% alcohol or oil. Cheap perfume can be the ratio of cologne, with three aromatics.
We learned about it in high school chem., mainly history, making it is organic chemistry. My manager went to the same high school. I still use some of the knowledge to make so called martial arts "medicine" for external use. I go to Chinatown (use to have a Chinese co-worker get them from China) and buy herbs and put them in ethanol-ethyl alcohol. Like clear cherry brandy or vodka.
When my brother buys his aromatics he uses them like a perfume. They are pure aromatic not cut with anything. You add them to a solvent, like alcohol. In a big city nearby where I live store sell homemade fragrances but the solvent used is oil.

Very close, 1) perfume as high as 40% aromatics, 2) eau de parfum , 3) eau de toilette, 4) eau de cologne can be as low as 2% aromatics and 5) eau fraiche as low as 1% aromatics, lol!
*Perfume uses aromatics for affecting the olfactory system with some aromatics lasting longer that is one of the purposes of more then one aromatic. And it depends a little on how the fragrances is used and applied. On dry skin fragrances do not last a long time. Some women add perfume to something (handkerchief hidden under a garment, etc.) and keep it on them, so the smell last longer.
-
I would think that the Perfumes are the stronger fragrance that lasts longer than a Cologne. A cologne is kind of like a watered-down version of the perfume.
-
i agree with the other post that as a man i would say that is womens perfume and mans cologne
-
I don't know the differences, but I thought women fragrance is perfume and men is cologne.
-
My mom once told me that cologne is oil-based, so it is stronger and lasts longer, while perfume is alcohol- or water-based. I know this was definitely true for her favorite scent that she used to wear all the time. She would only buy the bottles (or pulse points, or powder, etc.) that said cologne because it lasted longer (and therefore was a better deal). About 5 or 6 years back the company that made it discontinued the scent, but there was such a strong response they brought it back, but only as a perfume. I noticed that the perfume, while it smells just as good, wasn't nearly as strong and didn't last as long.
But since perception drives reality, and the market, I think some companies have gone more with the common belief that cologne is masculine and perfume is feminine, at least with the more largely available scents. Higher end, more expensive scents may still be described by the old rules, but I've never looked that closely at it.

Colognes are weaker in their smell.

Good perfumes are usually stronger for many reasons. Some stronger colognes may be a so-called better deal because they seem to cost less, there is more of it and therefore it does last longer. With over 10,000 fragrances out there a few may not be missed.
*Made some cologne/perfume last night, from alcohol and household spices.

ladiess scents and mens scentss im guessingg
-
I think perfume has a higher concentrate of the core ingredients.
-
Idk... I think perfumes are fragrances for females and colognes are fragrances for males.
-
Colonge and Perfumes exist for men and women. From my personal experiences, colonges are cheaper than perfumes and usually come in larger quantities than perfumes. Another difference between colognes and perfumes is that perfume scents lasts longer on the skin than colognes.
-
not sure.I see them called both.
-
It depends on the wearer. Some people prefer the lighter scent of Perfume and others the heavier sent of Cologne that is closer to a man's scent which is heavier can be overwhelming.
-
i think perfumes are lighter sents, but im not sure
-
cologne is for poor people and perfume is for the rich folk. perfume is typically better qaulity and the intensity of the smell is supposed to last longer
