I know this is a stupid question but every year for the past 8 years I file my federal and state taxes but I had no idea there was a city tax that you file too!!!??? I thought it was included in the state? It's not even an option when you file online through h&r block! So is it a mandatory thing or what???

I don not have to file city tax becuase we live outside of our city limits. I am rural.
-
in indiana it is figured in with state taxes, so no seperate forms
-
That's what I assumed... that it's figured in to your state taxes but I'm not sure?
-
It just depends on where you live and work. In Indiana, local/city taxes are in the state rate. In Ohio and Kentucky, though, there are some places that have a city tax that is paid separately from state tax. You need to check the tax offices of where you work and live.

Fortunately, no.

I personally file a city tax return every year, but every city is different. Really depends on where you are from.

No

If it is required, it must be part of the state filing form. I have never filed a separate form for the city.

Here in Texas we do not as of yet have either a state or city income tax. Instead we have a higher sales tax.
