Title: What religion are you?
Post by: home_teachin on May 11, 2009, 10:10:11 pm
Since I have noticed a little debate over religion on another thread, I'd like to see how diverse we are in this area.
Please be respectful of other people's beliefs.
For the record, I'm a Freethinker (Atheist)

"love is my religion" - ziggy marley

i was raised christian by my mother, but asked to be open minded and question things by my father. i carry with me the FAITH i've found in a God my heart says is true, and i don't expect anyone else to believe what i do, and i don't push it on anyone. i think everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. i think faith is what gets you through the day, and everyone should believe in whatever does that for them.

i don't really believe in religion. i think it's too organized and scripted. instinct and faith floats my boat :)

This is a tough question for me.  I was raised Baptist but as I've grown older am beginning to question that belief.  I don't believe in organized religion and have too many questions so I suppose I'm a freethinker.

Atheist, although it's not a religion.

Being an Atheist myself, I'm aware it isn't a religion, but I wanted to include it as a choice for the question.
It's true atheism isn't something you believe or a set of beliefs that comprises a religion. It's what I don't believe. It's funny, like when someone asks if I believe in evolution. Why not ask if I believe in gravity or photosynthesis?

Title: Christian Duty
Post by: UltimateChase on May 12, 2009, 11:38:21 pm
I'm an athiest, but I was a Christian as a kid. I kind of wonder about people who say that they're Christians but that they disagree with organized religion. I honestly have a lot more respect for people that don't pick and choose what parts of a religion fit their lifestyles. Like saying, "I'm a Christian, but I don't push that on other people" or "I don't expect other people to be." From what I know of Christianity, if you truly believe that Jesus is the son of God and is your savior, you have a duty to your fellow man to save as many of them as you possibly can, and that means making people believe who don't already.

It's confusing in that context, but yes it does. Or at least in my denomination. Jesus said, and I quote Matthew 28:19, "Go, and make disciples out of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit." So, in a sense, yes. You should try to save others. But not as a duty to man, rather as a duty to God.

well ever since i was a newborn (no seriously) up until my teens i went to the unitarian universalists society.  its not the christian unitarians or something but the spiritual one. it was a really pleasant atmosphere and all, not having to dress up fancy.  but now i dont go there. i dont really have a religion at the moment and i dont plan on converting to a new one any time soon. but hey! its a free country so everyone can think and believe what they want right? =D

I do not belong to any organized religion. I believe we all have something inside us that tells us right from wrong. This is my version of God. Whether or not we choose to obey this thing is totally up to us. I believe people were meant to experience happiness. Most people who knowingly ignore or go against these feelings are not truely happy. I am not saying that people should'nt have religious beliefs but if it feels wrong, it probably is wrong for you.

Im more of a spiritual person. I have a very strong faith without it who knows where I would be. I do believe some people tend to get too caught up in the "Religion" aspect of it rather than actually believing in what they do. Note I said SOME lol.

I am not exactly religious but spiritual in a way.  While I am not so sure about one god creating our entire existance I am confident that spiritual planes exist.  And peoples souls come from beyond the grave when they feel they have to finish something or are just here because they feel like it.

And for the religions that do not speak of a heaven?

A lot of people are saying religion is the same across the board, with different labels, when it's pretty easy to see that's not true.  The core principles and theology taught in most religions differ from one another quite a bit.

I use to be a Buddhist and Atheist a couple of times around.
But now I'm a Christian for almost a decade.

From what I know of Christianity, if you truly believe that Jesus is the son of God and is your savior, you have a duty to your fellow man to save as many of them as you possibly can, and that means making people believe who don't already.
Scripture doesn't teach this.
It's confusing in that context, but yes it does.
I don't find it confusing at all. Simply, we don't have a duty to man.

We can't save anyone. That's God's job. There is only one Savior and His name is Jesus. The wind blows where it wills. We have no control over the regenerating power of God's Holy Spirit.

His knowledge of Christianity describes the life and experience of radical evangelism but this isn't what a rational evangelical means by "duty," though.

It shows one side of the coin and reads very little into the actual nature of Scriptural "witnessing."

But this is not the end of the story...

But not as a duty to man, rather as a duty to God.
Right. Our "job" is to live our lives to the glory of God. In this we are called to evangelize the lost - which simply means share the good news of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus for our sins.

1 corinth. 3:6-8
"I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building."

Many have said - we do not convert a soul - we scatter the seed and God brings the harvest.

We do this not even first and foremost to save the lost, but to glorify God. So we should be as busy as God calls us to be in the business of our Father.

Or at least in my denomination. Jesus said, and I quote Matthew 28:19, "Go, and make disciples out of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit." So, in a sense, yes.
Keep in mind the passage isn't about making just "converts" but making disciples, which is something we should be actively doing by encouraging our Christian brothers and sisters, sharpening one another, challenging, speaking life, etc. And inviting others who aren't following Christ yet.

But if the idea of Christianity is all about "saving people," then I think the whole story is not being told.

And I do think that a one-sided "call of duty" requires a much more nuanced treatment of the parallels between holiness and evangelism in the NT (Jude 17-22) than currently exists.

You should try to save others.
The 'saving' is done by God. God saves people.

Salvation starts with God and ends with God.

Sometimes he lets us be a part of this happening by us being in the right place at the right time or whatever.

All we can do is proclaim the good news. Or so it seems to me.

i was baptized as a roman catholic, but kind of went my separate ways once i got to middle school. tried many religions from hinduim to judaism to satanism. i've kind of taken beliefs from all different religions, and use them in my daily life, but don't stick to just one. although i do agree with pookie07, christianity is all about money. there's at least two christian churches on each block around here. and they all keep rebuilding their churches every 5 years or so. it's out of control!

Baptized Methodist, but now attend a Lutheran church since hubby is a Lutheran.

I am not the type of person who believes that only Christians get into Heaven though. If there is a Heaven, I believe God won't discriminate against people who aren't Christians. Just my two cents. Religion is a touchy subject and I say "To each, his own."

I totally agree. We preach that God is loving and forgiving, and I don't believe that God would reject someone if they weren't Christian, or weren't Muslim, or whichever.

I think any kind of organized religion is just a business.  But as long as nobody is hurting me, they can believe in what ever they want.  I do think it is a little sad, when people take the bible to heart.  I believe it's just a childrens story that as stayed intact over centuries.   i really think there was a man named jesus, and he died for what he believed in, but the rest is mostly fabricated.  I believe he was just a man.  I don't think a virgin had a baby.  I believe i was made from some guy's rib about as much as I believe in santa claus.  Most people are scared of dying and need to believe there is something beyond this, that their life as meaning.  Believing in these things helps them with that.  I guess for some people if they didn't think humans were special or if they weren't going to go to "hell", they would do what ever they want without consequences. it would probably be chaos.

Honestly my husband bealives very little in the bible, he said man made the book to scare and is mostly fable stories. He told me that if you have a personal relationship with god, you are not judged by god if you read the bible or not just like going to church. He told me as long as you have him in your heart your life is complete. My husband is very open minded. BUT I just asked him if I went to hell before or after hes death, what would he do, he said I would ask my maker to go with my soul mate. AWWWW I love my hubby!!! Although I do not bealive in heaven or hell!! It was a sweet comment to say.

I am from a pentacostal church (didnt spell that right)..lol..i dont agree with everything they say..like for instance i dont see whats so bad with gay marriage personally if two men or two women want to get married let them if thats what it takes to make them happy..why should you stand in the way of someone elses happiness..despite a few issues that i have with some ppl in my church i love it..i grew up there and alot of ppl there are actually related to me..my uncle is the pastor.. :)

I am agnostic. I don't know if there's a god or not, and I don't really care.
I was raised Christian. I read the bible in order to form my own opinion, and I can't believe in it.
I don't know what to believe, but I really don't care to find something to believe in. I'll just find out what happens when I die when I die.

for me after studying all popular and known religions i have come to the conclusion that .99999999999999999999999999999 percent of religion is dogma and only .00000000000000000000000000001 percent is belief.  religion is personal.  it is what you believe not what someone has told you to believe. religion got part of it right and science got part of it right. all is energy that changes but nothing is wasted. i get what i need and i share because i care.  therefore, live life as a three year old and enjoy health, happiness, peace and a positive perspective.

Funny thing here, I was born and raised Christian but while being locked up and abused by the staff of a Christian facility I have since then dropped it.

I do not consider myself atheist, I feel myself to be independent of all religion or belief values.

I do what I do, I live my life well and live it as I see fit as long as I am a good person that is all that matters, you do not need religion to be a good person.

wow, sorry you had to go through that. There are many "fake" christians out there. I had a similar experience but did learn one thing, God has always been there for me as people turn their backs. You don't have to be religious to know God and be his child.

My family is Catholic but after years of going to a private school with mass every Wednesday I realized that it just wasn't working out for me.

Although I still hold some ties and traditions to Christianity (Mostly teachings and ethics)

Anyways I've been a Pagan for almost two years now.

Buddhism, I believe in karma
why do believe this? i am a christian and belief that God sent his only son down to the earth to die for what we did wrong is the only way to get to heaven. no good works, just plain old salvation.

I hate it when people do this. Try to prove that their way is better or more rational. It's the kind of thing that starts arguments. xD  :angry7: :angry7: :angry7:

There should be an argument (rather a debate).  Thousands year old myths that are still causing widespread negativity in the world should be talked about and criticized.

I'm kind of like marieelissa.

But I think God is sort of like a remedy when you're feeling down. You rely on Him when times are tough, and it does really help when you thank God when you need it.
It's a little hard to explain, haha.
But I don't really believe in after life either.

I belong to the church of Ted Danson or "Dansonism" if you will. Because nothing in the universe is more powerful then Ted Danson.
