When you step outside at 5:00 in the morning with your first cup of coffee, the last thing you expect to encounter is a rattlesnake!!! I stepped on something which moved under my feet, so with flashlight, I saw a 4ft. rattler scuttling to a safe place. He must have been as sleepy as I was, otherwise he probably would have struck! Armed with a long pole and shovel, I followed him to my truck, where he decided to hide in the wheel well. 3 hours later, I managed to usher him into an empty garbage can. I "escorted" him to a place well away from my property where I let him loose. Everyone says I'm nuts, (probably), but living in the desert, these situations (although disturbing), have to be expected. Every living thing has its purpose, and a potentially deadly snake is no exception. They were placed here for a reason, but I wish their reason or "purpose" in life could be conducted far away from my property!! Since my pets are my main concern, their safety was paramount. I know that a bite from one of these snakes could prove deadly. We actually have "snake avoidance" classes for pets here. I think I will enroll mine.

wow how scary.. are you from the mid west?? we have rattlesnakes to but i have personally never seen one in the wild,, i am from michigan..

yes, i carry spiders outside instead of squashing them. i'm not brave enough to handle a rattler. i would have had to call for some back-up!

That is way sweet. Don't know if I would have had the courage to handle one that big. Snakes are so fascinating tho. It's awesome that you didn't kill it. They help keep the rodent population down.

If I would have stepped on that thing, I would have been doing a new dance. :)

Better accidentally stepping on it, then sitting on it.

I am not afraid of snakes, but I definatley have alot of respect for them. I probablly would have spent the afternoon trying to catch it and than grabbed it by the head so it couldn't bite. Snakes are definatley really cool. After I got tired of holding it, I would bring it somewhere far from my house because I have pets too.
