Title: Anti-Virus Software
Post by: bloins on June 05, 2013, 04:24:53 pm
Does anyone no of a good "free" anti-virus software available to download?  I bought this computer in February and my Norton subscription just ran out and I don't want to pay to renew it if there is a free alternative. I have tried a couple of "speed my PC" deals but they always say I have x amount of errors and can only be fixed by paying for an upgrade :angry7: Please let me know if you have any suggestions

I don't have confidence in ANY virus protection software, free or paid. I prefer to have a separate computer I use for Internet access that runs Linux (free) instead of Windows. That may seem like overkill, but I have not had any further problems in years after losing a couple of Windows computers to infections even while running protection. The MONTHS of disruption I had to go through made me a BELIEVER.

No virus software is completely foolproof, but I like AVG too. It's free, and does it's job most of the time.

So very true, but if you are running Linux just for getting online, your Windows is 100% protected.

What OS are you running? I believe win 8 has Anti Virus built in to defender. For Win 7 there's Microsoft security essentials.

You can download it free online, just do a search for Browser Linux (one I use)

Then follow the instructions on the website to install it on a USB memory stick or burn it to a CD to try it out.

What I ended up doing is I installed it permanently on an older PC I had replaced and I use that just for surfing on the Internet.

Download the FREE version of "AVAST!"  Norton stinks, McAfee isn't what it used to be, and "AVG," which you can also download for FREE has turned into a resource hog.  I've been using AVAST! for a few years now and it really does it's job.  I'm happy to promote them, LOL.

I have used avast and avg in the past. I have a free norton subscription that came with the computer at the moment but overall either free program works as well. I like avast a bit better because it doesn't have as many pop-up notifications in my experience. Some other programs I like to download are advanced system care which helps scan for issues and keeps computer running more smoothly. I always go to cnet download center Download.com for my free software. Do a search on their site with the free box marked and you can look at top free programs in many categories. The site also gives massive feedback from users and often video reviews, pros/cons for each download. It is a really great trusted resource.

I use AVG Internet Security which you have to pay for.  I do not trust free anti-virus software because it is very limited in its scope.

If you use free Linux for most of your Internet access, limited scope is all you need for Windows.
