Title: Do You Still Use a Phonebook?
Post by: gaylasue on July 16, 2013, 10:01:43 am
Do you still use a phonebook or look your phone numbers up online?  I try to use FusionCash search to get phone numbers for businesses as much as possible now but still have phonebooks on hand in case I need a residential number.  I still receive a new phonebook each year even though we haven't had a landline in our house for ten years now.  Like us, a lot of people have done away with home phones and aren't listed in the book.

I stopped using phone books a very long time ago and use the internet to find what I need.  It's really amazing but, Phoenix seems to have at least 20 different phone books.  At one point, I had to use an entire cabinet just to save all of these phone books.  I got so disgusted I threw them all out.  Even though they gave us the chance to say whether or not we wanted to receive these books anymore and I opted NOT to receive them, I still found them outside my front door on too many occasions.  Now when I find them, they go directly into the recycling bin.

If I do not have Internet connection, I use the old-fashion paper phonebook. If I have Internet, I Google: SuperPages.com . It is a busniness directory online.

We just got a new phone book a few days ago, and I was thinking what a waste of money it was.  I use it maybe twice a year, but the print is so tiny, I can barely read it, even with my reading glasses.

Nope! Phonebooks are heavy and way out of date. There are online registries that are much easier and much less hassle. Only thing a phonebook might be good for is a paperweight... or perhaps a craft project...

Phone books are starting to become history. They are stopping the printing of many of them because most people have cell phones. They are still printing the business part of phone books. I have saved my last phone book they delivered. I use both the phone book and I will also search on line.

I can't remember the last time I opened a phone book.  When we moved out to a new county I went a little nutty not having one -in at my fingertips.  I don't know why...once I did get one I never did open it.  Funny thing though, when my mother-in-law was visiting one time she asked me if I had one handy and I had one for every other town but the one she was looking for.  That's when I declared to ditch the phone books and stick to internet searches for phone numbers.

Yeah, I use it all the time... As a door stop, a coaster, a fly swatter, etc.  ;D

Seriously, I do use the phone book every once in awhile to look up numbers. But the numbers for my friends / relatives I usually have stored on my cell, so I don't use it that much for residential look ups. I also like that our phone book has a street map of the city, which tends to be more detailed than maps of the state yet still covers more than just the downtown area that other city maps only cover, so its very helpful it finding where certain places are. They also have some other helpful information, esp. about government services such as library hours, post office locations and hours, etc.

I still use the phone book. At times what i might be looking for is not listed on computer in our rural area. When i dge a number then put it in my cellphone book.  I have a bad habit of not answeing my cell phone if i don't know the number or who it is from.

Agreed.

It's funny, actually.  I don't even think people who are technology challenged use them much anymore.  Case in point: Just the other day, one of my elderly neighbors called up asking if I could go online to find a number for her, since she doesn't have a computer.  She heard that "you can find out numbers online."

This also after we were delivered on all of our porches the new phone books just a couple weeks earlier. lol

I still use a phone book from time to time, I also have a land line phone as well.  You never know when you might need it, I got a phone that doesn't require electric because when I loose power we can't charge our cell phones or my son puts off paying the cell phone and we all get disconnected I still have my emergency phone.  I have medical issues and sometimes I am left alone and we are thinking about getting those emergency button things to contact family or police and ambulance.

If I need a phone number of a particular place, I go to the Internet. I do a search on the name and the city,ST where it is located. I find what I am looking for right away from the list provided by the search engine. I don't have enough phonebooks for all the numbers that I need to call. sometimes the local phone books will not have the right listing anyway. That really aggrevates me. I just go to the Internet and avoid all that frustration!

I use phonebooks, because it is too much of a hassle to go turn on the computer and connect to the internet just to find a simple number. It's unfortunate that people are so taken with new technology that they give up simple things, and make their lives more complicated. Don't get me wrong, I like computers and spend most of my spare time on mine, but there are some things that are better done offline. Unfortunately, in our area at least, phone books are getting smaller and smaller, and I think they are being phased out.

I still use a phone book at times, especially for local numbers.  I also made an Excel directory of friends, family, and other numbers I call frequently to keep in my purse for quick reference in case my mobile phone is not handy (or no WiFi when traveling).  I can update and reprint whenever there are changes.

No not really I mostly use the internet and my cell phone to look up things, if I have to use the phone book it would be to find something that I could not find anywhere else

We have a phonebook for our families cottage cause sometimes the places up there either don't have a webpage or can't be found easily online so it's nice to have something in case you really want that number.  Other than that though, I don't really use it unless there is no other way to get a phone number.  I think the phonebook we have is like 3 years old though so that doesn't mean that number is even correct.

I still use the phone book occasionally. It just depends onwhen I need rhe number. If it's early enough in the day that I haven't turned on the computer yet I'll use the phone book.If I'm already online,I'll go to the company's website and find the number there.

I occasionally use a phone book to look up a number when I don't feel like going on online. I usually look up all of my information online and have found I get just as much and more from the internet. When I didn't have the computer I pretty much always used the phone book. My mother uses it more than I do because she's not a big internet user.

The only thing I use a phone book for now is to use the yellow pages now and then if I'm looking for a local business. Computers have changed our lives so much that a lot of things have become obsolete.

Our phone book was just delivered the other day and it went directly into the recycling bin. So much faster to look it up online.

I still use the good old fashioned phonebooks, white and yellow pages. It has gotten a lot more complicated finding things in the yellow pages through the years.

I use a phone book for local numbers as I'm in a rural area and a lot of info for people out here isn't online.

Hate to be in the minority, but as a former telephone switchboard operator, I use the phone book first. If I can't find it right away, I'll use my computer.

Of course, if I'm already on my computer when I want to look something up, that would be my option.

BTW, I can't bear the idea of giving up my land line. I don't know why, since no one calls me but telemarketers.  :BangHead:

I have not used a phonebook for the purpose of phone numbers for years.  It is much easier to look on line.  I find that the books end up in the recycling and not used.

I have not had a phonebook delivered to my house in years,   so i guess no

I still use a phone book for local numbers and use the internet for long distance numbers and addresses. We're so lucky (NOT!). We get 2 phone books from 2 different companies. One has printing so small, you need a magnifying glass to see it. Wish they'd stop sending them.

The other one is pretty neat cause it has our local mall mapping all the stores that are open and the restaurant section has a lot of menus with prices, which make me hungry. LOL

I think I only look up 2-3 phone numbers in any given month so I really wouldn't care if I didn't have any phone books.
