Title: What fruits and Veggies should I avoid?
Post by: anotherlaujgirl on July 17, 2013, 03:07:13 pm

When barely getting started with a diet, I hear there are a few I shouldn't start eating immediately..

For example. Bananas because of the carbohydrates that I dont yet need....

What else is there?

I yes it depends on your weight loss method. Some methods restrict carbs. I have never deleted them from my diet but eat in moderation. ( one serving daily).

I guess it depends on what direction you're taking your diet. But I've lost weight by eating more fruits and veggies throughout the day. If anything eat more veggies than fruit.

Just eat 1/2 of what you usually eat and then walk up and down the stairs 8 times daily and you will see weight loss slowly but it will continue.  the older you are the longer it takes. But you must remember to much of anything is not good for you.  and if you like watermelon that is good to eat because it is only water. Good luck

Honestly I think it depends on your own metabolism, and how active you are. I've heard and read supposedly to avoid bananas and carrots on diets because they are high in sugar... and yet every time I've ever lost a significant amount of weight, I had eaten a banana with breakfast every day, and snacked on baby carrots throughout the day.

Good luck on your diet.  I know that fresh vegetables and fruits help with a diet.

I knew a person who had lost a lot of weight by avoiding dairy, gluten, and sugary foods.

I'm not sure the diet you are on but overall more natural foods is better for you. If you are trying for low GI (Glycemic index) foods then there are lots of charts online that talk about the best fruits for that kind of diet. Really it is about eating natural less processed foods, portion control, drinking enough water. I found that a lot of my problem was I didn't know when I was hungry vs. thirsty. Those impulses felt the same but now I drink water before I eat to make sure that I am really hungry and not just thirsty. Plus you eat less when you fill up on water.

I have never really understood eliminating certain fruits and vegetables. They are all natural foods that have been around FOREVER.

Eat less food, track your calories. MOVE YOUR BODY.

You will see results.

If you are going to eliminate or reduce anything - SODA, CONDIMENTS, BREAD, DAIRY....

Just cook veggies all the way thouroughly and wash/rinse the fruits very well! Drop any soda drinks and go with water.

This may be a question for a nutritionist.. If you have an underlying health factor ie: Diabetes you may not want to avoid some but eat them in moderation.  If you're focused on loosing a few pounds than potatoes, corn, grapes and yes bananas aren't the best to choose from... at least not right away.  I know people who pulled bananas from there diets and there potassium levels dropped dangerously low.  Bottom line, everyone's body is different and requires a little more or a little less of somethings.

There are people who will argue with this but there are no fruits and vegetables you need to avoid.  That is a myth you need to eat within reason, go to a site that tells you for your age, weight and height how many calories you need to eat every day to maintain or lose weight.  Bananas and all fruits and vegetables provide certain nutrients that you need.

My sister, a registered dietician, would agree... She keeps telling us how she get patients that have heard that this food or that food is unhealthy (eg carrots for their high GI), but she says that more than what foods you should / shouldn't eat, the best way to have a healthy diet is by having a balanced, properly portioned diet. If you start nixing certain foods out of your diet (esp. right from the get go), you a) tend to lose out on certain nutrients, b) you start mixing signals in your body, and c) few people stick with the diet over the long run. For example, even though fats have the highest caloric level per gram, fat intake also controls signals in your body for feelings of hunger (your body has a feedback loop that sends signals of being "full" when you eat some fats). Hence the bit of truth to the idea (stereotype?) that an hour after eating Chinese food, you're hungry again (because of the small amount of fats in some stir fry). So if your major problem is portion control, having a small amount of fats in your meal (eg maybe a handful of peanuts 1/2 hour before you eat) will help you to not feel as hungry and allow you to be comfortable eating less.

Also, try to do smart substitutions instead of cutting out a type of food entirely. Instead of "no bread" switch to eating whole grain breads (esp. those with a high fiber, high protein content). Your body will adjust better to this minor change and you won't get the cravings that you might were you to eliminate breads completely. Or substitute herbs and spices instead of salt as seasoning.

"Diets" are for fools.  What you need to do is monitor what you eat and how much you eat.  Keeping a food journal will help, that way you will change your eating habits for the better, lose weight and be healthier in the long run.  Every food is good for you, it's just a matter of watching how much of it you eat that's why the Mediterrean way of eating is best.  You re-train how you eat for LIFE not just temporarily!!!  Good luck!!!

Read "the China Study" diet by T. Colin Campbell. It is based on Nutrition Biochemistry that shows that getting your nutrients from plants is healthier than getting them from animals sources.

There is a ton of great advice in this post already.  To the person whom wrote avoid what you are allergic to or tastes bad.  That's very simple and great advice.  Rather cutting things out that have been claimed as bad for you in this instance or bad for you in that instance just avoid what you don't like or are allergic to.  Smart.
