Title: Why do people say they have to get their wisdom tooth pulled?
Post by: bjohnson52 on July 19, 2013, 10:53:40 pm
How can a tooth be labeled wise all it does is grow inside your mouth?

I'm sure you could google wisdom teeth and get the answer. I think it has to do with the age of growth for these teeth. I am only guessing here b/c I don't really have time to look this up. I think they are the last teeth to come in and sometimes they never do break thru and can become impacted and painful. Anyway, seems that they call them wisdom teeth b/c you have reached a certain age before they come out.

Mines are twisted (head to the side) if they start trying to come they do not have the space and will push all other ones out of the way.  My Girls did not have enough space on their mouth for it and they have to get them out after braces come off.  My husband's were out and the got black and were not doing anything good for his mouth so he had them pulled.  I guess it all depends on the person.

Here is an answer for it, and I know this from experience.  While they call them "wisdom teeth", they hurt about as bad as if you had gone through labor.  I went to the dentist and he told me to brush my teeth extra hard when it came down to those.  I did and it lessened the pain.  I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth. ??? ??? ???

BECAUSE THEY HURT!!!!! They are WAY in the back and hard to reach with a toothbrush they often don't get brushed properly and they begin to hurt badly!!!

I have 4 wisdom teeth and I will have my extraction at mid August (not looking forward for that)... People and dentist suggest wisdom teeth removal due to the increase of future dental issue like crowding, gum disease, plaque, tooth decay, etc.... Wisdom teeth will start appearing the at your 16-25 age at the back-est of your mouth.... You will either have impacted wisdom teeth which is when your wisdom teeth erupts normally (like your other teeth) but provides crowding and it's harder to clean. While partially erupted wisdom teeth is when your wisdom teeth cannot erupt from your gums and grows sideway, this is probably the one that causes the most problems. Partially erupted wisdom teeth provides crowding discomfort and can easily trap foods (which can cause bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay).

I have two impacted wisdom teeth at the top row of my teeth and two partially erupted wisdom teeth and the bottom row of my teeth... GG

My wisdom teeth hurts so bad but I am terrified to get it extracted because I heard some painfull stories about it. I just hope I can finally agree to get it removed before the end of the year.

The pain(s) some may incur from having their wisdom teeth extracted pale in comparison to the troubles they will encounter if they don't have them removed if there is not sufficient room (most people) for them to grow in properly. As others state, they are difficult to keep clean even if one has the room for them.

Consult a good dentist, and if advised they should be removed, don't let the fear of a day or two of pain stop you... you have years of pain ahead if you keep them. ;D

Good question. I never really understood this either.  :confused1:

I do know that I simply did not have room in my mouth for wisdom teeth. I barely have room for the teeth I have now.

My dentist did some x-rays on me in my early 20s, and said the wisdom teeth had to go.

One of my sons had to have his extracted and that was in his teenage years. He was the only one of my three that had to do it.

i called it my third molar.

i don't get how the term wisdom tooth came to be either, but i don't really care as long as i get it pulled to stop interfering with my other teeth as some of them grow the wrong way

Oh I have the worst wisdom tooth! I think it's growing into my jaw it's hard to open my mouth too wide and yawn. The whole left side of my face is permanently swollen and it's incredible visible. It's gross and very painful I just don't have the money to be paying the dentist

I guess because they are the last to come in, but the first to decay....I got mine when I was grown and had no clue what was going on...I went to the dentist, my jaw was swollen and very painful...Dr Brady told me what it was and he went on and removed it...

I once heard that Wisdom teeth were an advantage to have in human history because it was not uncommon to lose teeth before the age of dentistry. Now our mouths have become too small to hold all the teeth and that leads to crooked teeth. We often remove them because of overcrowding in the mouth and preventing pain and discomfort from having them. I had mine removed in 3 visits to the Dentist once they were coming out of the gum line because they didn't start coming in all at once).  As for calling them wise I just think it is because you get them when you are older rather than your other teeth.

if I gets impacted they should come out.you can go to sleep and get some good pain meds like vicodin.the next day is bad cause your face swells but after that should be ok.

I remember having surgery when I was 14 to get all 4 of mine removed at the same time. Boy I was in so much pain for a couple weeks.

I was one of the lucky few who never got wisdom teeth.  For me, this was a blessing, as I had inherited my father's small jaw, and my mother's large teeth.  My mouth couldn't hold the teeth it already had.

Before anyone thinks I'm that lucky for not having wisdom teeth, to fix my already crowded mouth, I had 13 teeth pulled (including 4 permanent bicuspids - so I only have 24 teeth vs the standard 28) and one tooth surgically uncovered (an cainine that decided to grow sideways into my front incisor).  After all that came the braces.  I feel I've more than paid my dues to the dental community.   ;D

Growing wisdom teeth is a real worst thing. I have seen my friend struggling badly with pain when he got them. I feel that the best thing is to pull them out surgically. I think that would definitely be less painful than letting them grow naturally. You can get details about wisdom teeth extraction Rockville MD (http://www.mysmilekeeper.com/our-practice/promotions/) from the link.

I think they are nicknamed "wisdom" because they emerge after childhood, indicating one would have acquired some wisdom, but realistically, they have nothing to do with this.

Wisdom teeth is basically a teeth that pops out when you get older... Hence it's called wisdom teeth... The older you get the more it grows (meaning you become wiser when you get old)... In some cases you don't need to extract them if they erupted normally (probably porvide crowding in your teeth tho).. But if it's partially erupted you have to remove them or complications will happen later on... Because it will be prone to trap food, cyst, or your wisdom teeth breaking out to your molars

When I turned 39, my wisdom tooth (I only have ONE Thank God) just started breaking skin. Therefore I was teething like a brand new baby  :o . It took two years for it to finally grow half way. I even had the tooth next to it extracted. It moved over a touch but still won't come out all the way. For the last two years it would come up, go down, come up, go down. What a pain in the butt! A wisdom tooth is the mother of ALL the teeth in your mouth, hence the "Wisdom" name. The roots are ridiculously long and I have been told very painful post extraction. I won't extract mine unless I'm in pain, which I am not!

Mine became abscessed. I have never had a cavity and rarely visited the dentist. They were the first toothache I ever had. Kept me awake all night and saw the first dentist who would see me the next morning.

Mine too, they are twisted and will need to be remove if they ever decide to show up.  AT 45 they have it and I hope they do not but I will see.  My 2 girls had braces and they need them removed.  My oldest had them already extracted in two waves, and she is more happy for it now.  My youngest still needs to wait a few more months for them to drop before getting them out.  Neither one of them has room in their mouth for more teeth.

My husband's came out years ago and he was fine with them, until one of them started hurting, went to the dentist and the roots were black and getting worse, so he had his 4 wisdom teeth removed and says he feels more better now for it.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at one time when I was 12 years old.  I had to have it done before I got my braces as I had a small mouth and there wouldn't have been enough room.

Having my wisdom teeth extracted was the second most painful operation I have ever had (kidney stones were the worst). I was put under anesthesia for five hours and came to at five and a half hours with the dentist chiseling away at my mouth.  I have broken ribs, my nose, my foot and My wrist. I had over one hundred and seventy stitches put in my leg after an auto accident.  I am always rolling my ankles and have dislocated my thumbs several times. All of these injuries were a walk in the park when compared to the pain I got from having my wisdom teeth taken out!

I had to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth out cuz they were starting to impact the other teeth. I can't remember if I have a lot of pain though. When I had braces and that hurt but that was before I had the wisdom teeth out.

You are asking why they are called 'wise'?  Just think about it for a minute and it makes sense.  Those are the last teeth to come in.  They come with age...like wisdom.

Sounds like yours were impacted. I had the same problem. They had to be surgically extracted, not pulled. It isn't pleasant.
