I got rid of RealPlayer on my computer.
I don't like their monopoly for downloading videos.
I am still learning about "codec" and trying to transfer my youtube videos to Windows Media Player.
I installed "k-lite" codec pack and it helped transfer some. The transfer was random, however, and I still have a few youtube video favorites I want to add to Windows Media Player.
I have to figure out how to use k-file - it maytake me a while......
In all my investigations, I discovered "Listube".
There is a huge selection of music videos for free.

I've used VDownloader before to save videos from YouTube (http://vdownloader.com/ (http://vdownloader.com/)). It allows you to specify which format you want to save the videos as, which is nice if there is a certain player that you'd rather use over a different one. However if you plan on sharing the videos with many friends and/or on-line, I'd ask that you respect the copywrite and direct them to the actual URL.
BTW, "codec" is just a generic term for a coder / decoder program that is used to encode and/or decode some other file. For example, LAME is a codec for MP3 files. Different companies make different codec packages for "reading" certain types of files. Sometimes you can use the same media player to open different files if the player is provided with the correct codec addon.
