Yesterday I went in to renew my drivers license, and the line was about 50 people deep. So today I am trying again, I signed up online for an appointment, so we will see how fast it goes this time! Wish me luck

Don't know where you live but I am originally from Chicago where it seemed to take forever standing in those lines. In 2005 I moved down to Bethalto, a small village in southwestern Illinois where it now literally takes a few minutes to get that stuff done.

Making an appointment online is the way to go. When you arrive at the dmv, you still have to wait a few minutes on the for appointment only line, but after that, you breeze pass everyone in line who don't have an appointment.

Go to any other DMV in your state. Renew it there. It is that simple.

I guess that is another advantage of living in a small town-- the longest lines are only at Wal-Mart.

Good luck though, I think even have an appointment you still have to wait too. I always book my appointment online because when I call in they take forever to response too. No comment with DMV but I think they should work on there stuff a little faster.

Good luck, hope it works out better for you. I had to get mine renewed this year. Fortunately it wasn't that bad of a wait. It was like an express place.

The lines at the Department of Drivers Services are always long. I hate going in to renew. It takes hours to get anything done in these places.

The DMV is the stuff nightmares are made of!
-
I hate renewing my drivers license, and I have a bad leg and back trouble and I have to stand in the long line.
-
Yea we have a kiosk too to check in on, it went fairly fast. took about 20 minutes so not so bad

Oh, wow, how thankful I am that I live in a small community. I've never had to wait longer than 2 - 3 people to renew my driver's license.
-
we cant make appointments, thats a good idea. it always sucks going to the bmv!!

I didn't know it was an option to make an online appointment, I'll keep that in mind for when I move to Texas in a few months. I always make it a point to be there before the doors open, that tends to help (if your schedule allows you to be there that early).
-
Ya the dmv is usually crowded everday.

I don't think we can make appointments at our DMV but it'd be nice if we could. I haven't had to go too many times but its always a hassle when I do have to go. I think my license will be up for renewal next year.

I don't think in VA we can make online appointments, but I know what you mean waiting for anything at DMV is a total nightmare. A couple of months ago I renewed my tags, paid online with 3 weeks before the end of the month, changed my tag numbers since the old ones were old and dirty and bent. Here it is the weekend the 1st of the month is Monday and No NEW TAGS, NO NEW Registration I am freaking out, my daughter drives that car to College everyday and they do check the TAGS ion cars everyday. So here I go get up too early for a Saturday, get there at * on the dot and there are 50 people in front of me already, so i waited and apid $3 for a registration, was told that it could take anything between that day's mail to 2 weeks more.
Husband upset said that I should wait, but the 1st of the month is the next day and if I do not go my luck will be to get a ticket for driving with expire tags.
Tags and registration came on Tuesdays mail.
DMV is a nightmare.

I am in a rural area and don't usually have to wait very long at all. I have probably never waited more than 15 minutes.

In NJ we are able to mail our renewals in if we meet certain criteria, one one being age. I don't know how long it will last, but I am glad I did not have to stand in line at the DVM.

When we waited to long to renew, we have taken road trips to smaller towns to renew there. Anything very near where I live has lines from others driving out to them for shorter lines. I always try to make appointments and they go pretty fast. We use to be able to do it all by phone, I am a Notary and some of the pictures where people had not had them done for many years were pretty funny. One man I remember had a picture of a line haired hippy with a full 12 inch long beard. He came to have some papers notarized and showed me that picture, he is now completely bald, wears thick glasses and has no hair on his face at all. He definitely needed to get his picture redone. I have other where the license said 115 pounds, and they had to be at least 220. Pretty funny.

Does anyone know what it takes to renew a permit in New Jersey?
-
Maybe they should think of having an 8 to a 10 year expiration or better yet no expiration date. The lines are usually long but I have been lucky the longest I have ever waited was thirty minutes.
-
pretty easy to renew mine in KY guess I'm lucky.

Not long ago, I had to actually go into the DMV because they wanted a more recent pic. I think that as I get older I'll have to physically show up. It seems that the license has to be renewed more often now that I am over 35. It seems that as the government consolidates offices due to "money shortages" everything takes longer. UGG

Yeah it seems that there always busy with a bunch of people but our town is small town about 600 people and when there is a line of 5 people or more it takes forever because we only have one person that runs the license office and they are put in by votes when they run for that job. She is nice and all but they need at least two people to help customers.

When I went to renew mine, it gave me the option to pay online and they just mailed me a new drivers license, it had my same old picture and everything. So thankful I didn't have to deal with the DMV.

Same here bowrunner! That was one plus of moving up country that I was happily surprised to see.
I was absolutely dreading the DMV trip when we first moved here, just because my prior visits in cities had always been two or three hour ordeals.
There was no line whatsoever when I went. I breezed in and out.

It is so easy in our small town to renew. But of course when i had to renew i still came home to do it. Hated to stand in line for 2-3 hours. I would always take the bus where i used to live there when i had to go downtown, mainly the parking sucked and would have to walk several blocks but the bus let you out almost where you needed to go, but still did not like standing in line. It seemed like forever. But i could come home for a visit in less time then it took for my new driver lic. in the city.

We can renew once by mail. Then you have to go in for a retake.
