Title: Unwanted Phone Calls
Post by: catchow on September 28, 2013, 11:57:30 am
Ive been getting so many unwanted phone calls these days, I want to have my phone removed, its that bad. Ive put my number on the do not call registry list a dozen times at least. I dont have any kind of blocking available on my phone service (charter communications) Ive called Charter, they tell me theres nothing they can do about it.

One in particular is from a Bank Card Services, every time they call its a different number. Its a prerecorded message telling me if Im interested in lowering my interest to call them back, or press 9 to no longer receive these phone calls. I have pressed 9 in the past, but then saw a news story that sometimes by pressing certain buttons, your ok'ing your number to be charged with something, sorry cant remember the whole story.

I even called one of the numbers back and soon as the person answered they asked me are you interested in lowering your interest, I was about to say no, but can you please remove me from your list, no sooner then I got no out, she hung up, well that ticked me off, I called back and it said that my number was blocked from calling ...WTH!??!?

I get more phone calls from these scam places then I do people I know :( I no longer answer the phone if its not from someone I know. But daily I get at least a dozen calls from these scumbags  :BangHead:

Anyone else?

Thanks to caller ID, anytime my wife and I get a garbage call we either hang up before answering or just let it ring. ;)

Oh my, I was up all night working on cleaning and finally started to get tired around 7am and the phone rang like 5 times within that hour and none of them were numbers that I knew or cared about.  Of course, I was waiting for a number to call so I had to check every time but I was so ready just to disconnect the phone near me so it wouldn't ring right near my head every moment.

We get a lot of unwanted calls too!  We have caller ID so we just let most of them ring; occassionally I will answer and tell them to put me on their do not call list.  That works for awhile but then they start again.  Very frustrating!!  March of Dimes is one that calls a lot even though I have told them to take me off their list.  I made the mistake of donating to them several years ago and they keep calling and calling.  Last time I just interrupted the guy and told him I had already told them to quit calling me.  He apoligized and said he would see that it stopped.  Just curious to see how long it lasts this time!  We've been on the Do Not Call list for years but sometimes I don't guess it matters.  Wish you luck with yours!

If you are an internet addict like I am, then I'm sure that you get unwanted phone calls most of the day. Most companies sell your personal information to just about anyone who is willing to pay for it. These calls are very annoying. I generally pick up and hang up, considering the fact that they call during the busiest moment of my day.

i know that my husband has a ton of these such calls.  we dont give our number out to anyone so unless you are fortunate enough to be listed with your name in the call log then we just dont answer the phone let them waste there time and minutes calling.

For the past month or so, we've been getting multiple calls a day from foreign scammers who pretend we won something. They change their stories and their names, pretending to have American names like James Anderson, and they won't give up even though we have repeatedly told them we aren't interested. No, we just hang up without saying anything to them. But I came up with the idea of reading a sales pitch to them, about how they can make hundreds or thousands a day working from home. I figured a taste of their own medicine might stop their pestering! I haven't tried it yet, but we'll see if that works.
What I can't figure out, is how they got the home landline number. All the offers I do online I use my cell phone. Even most of the other stuff I do I use my cell phone number.

One thing I've learned regarding these scam calls is because they are scams, there is no "do not call list" for you to be removed.  By answering, you are letting the scammers know they have a live phone number, and they'll increase calls because they know you exist.  They probably also sell your number to other such operations which is why problems seem to get worse.

It's much like the scam emails you get that come with an "unsubscribe" link.  If you click the link, your email is then flooded with bogus spam because the scammers know they have a real email address.

Best to let the number ring - don't pick up, don't call back.  Some people report the numbers to the FCC.

I use Vonage, and fortunate for me, I found instructions on how I can route my calls through Google Voice, where GV will filter the call through their known scam list.  Once I did that, then number of scam calls I received dropped drastically.  Now when those guys call, they hear the "out of service" sound on my line, but legit numbers (or scam numbers not on their list) come through to my phone.  Those that make it through, I'll pick up if I know the number, and let it ring for those I don't.

I get it all the time...  Hope this call go away.  There sometime get another person in the same place calling me few times a day.  Sometime they heard my voice and hang up :)  I hang up their call all the time, not to be rude, but I told them to not call me but they still did.

I've changed my cell phone number more than once as things got so bad too. Despite adding my home phone to the do not call list laws still allow solicitators despite processes in that past to charge them if they did that to certain people. There was a box I heard to help filter out, but I hate the idea I have to pay even more to block people.

I get phone calls like this too. We don't respond to them though. Seems like if you do, a lot more start calling. After a while, the calls mostly stop. They never stop for good though. Eventually they start again, and we go through the annoying cycle all over again.  :BangHead:

Sorry you are getting scammer calls. They are pretty aggravating. When I put my cell phone number up on a craigslist ad I started getting them. If I don't know the number, I won't answer. If they don't leave a voicemail, I label it as a scam caller and add it to my "reject list."

Listen, the solution is just to install an answering machine or voicemail to let it do the work...Then you just zapp the recordings...no need to speak to anyone..

I read an article that about this subject. What they suggested was not using your caller ID and do not answer  the call. If you answer the call, they know you are
home and they will keep calling.

A few months ago I got  calls in 1 day from a travel agency. I looked up the name of their CEO in Manta and threatened  to call him and the FTC if they did not stop
calling,texting etc. It worked !

I got them on my house phone until I had the number disconnected; I wanted my house phone, but we had problems since it was connected at our house.  When it finally got so bad I had to change the number to my cell phone because I had people calling my number and asking for people I wouldn't know, regardless of personal or otherwise, my hubby opted not to pay the bill.  There was a call for a woman I didn't know to my house phone.  I told the woman I didn't know the woman and hung up my phone.  The same woman called my cell phone, and that did it for me.  I have had hangups, or a clown would call and not say a word.  People are strange in that they think that playing on the phone is mature.  I think, if you have nothing else to do, find something better to do than being aggravating and nonsensical.  There should be a law against that, but I don't see it happening. ??? :o ???

I get the Bank Card Services call, too. I think it's a scam. Don't answer it!

Also, I get one from Windows Department claiming my computer has a virus. I hang up on them. I don't see a name on the caller ID for those, so it's hard to know whether to answer or not.

My father in law will tell the caller from places like these that he needs their billing information because he is sending them a bill for the time they wasted. That quiets them up really quickly. Also, for legit companies, tell them to take your name off the list and never call you again. I bet it wouldn't work with Bank Card Services and Windows Department because they're committing fraud in the first place.

At one point I think my number was on every telemarketer or business owner in the USA. But I got fed up with them and getting wrong numbers and purchased a phone number blocker.  I don't mean going thru your phone company if you still have a landline-they simply charge too much.  My phone number blocker works great for me.  Although those same people may be calling but my phone only rings 1 time and then it is cut off. ;D

Have you reported the phone calls?  Go to the DO NOT CALL registry and report the calls.  I have done that several times.  Not a lot you can do to stop it.  I have no problem letting my phone ring if I do not know the number.  I also just have a cell phone now.  Turned home phone off.  So if it shows up 'blocked' or 'unavailable' I do not answer it.

I hate the ones who won't talk after you pick up the phone. You just listen to dead air. But you know that someone is on the phone because you don't have a dail tone. My husband says that he is sorry that the cat got their tongue and then hangs up!

I put my number on the "Do not call" list, don't know if that will make a difference.

I only pick up for familiar numbers.

"Go to the DO NOT CALL registry and report the calls."

I didnt actually know that you can report them there! Wow that would be helpful :)

I have voicemail, that picks up after three rings, Ive wondered if that keeps them coming back, they are probably thinking its a answering machine

I don't answer calls from numbers that I don't recognize.  If it is important, they will leave a message.  If they don't, it wasn't important enough to them to get in touch with me so I don't let it bother me.

I've been plagued a lot lately too, even though I'm on the Do Not Call list.  I've been here and had this landline number for about a year and a half.  This summer they really increased.  Usually they wouldn't leave a message, but a couple did.  They were trying to collect a debt from some man I've never heard of.  Then there was another group looking for a women I don't know, for the same reason.  They would start at 8:30 am and go until 9:00 pm.  It was quite disruptive, especially in the morning since I'm a night person.  :angry7:

I don't answer numbers I don't recognize and would just let the machine get it, but that left me with a bunch of messages to clear, many of which were blank.   ???

I decided to give them a taste of their own medicine so I started picking up the phone, with my thumb over the mic and just listen.  Some were recordings, some said nothing, some would ask "Hello?".  It was kind of fun actually.  I think it discouraged a few.   :angel12:

I contemplated an outgoing message stating who I wasn't and that I did not answer such numbers, but it would have been a bit long and annoying for legit callers.   :-\

Then I found my solution.  I was adding a new number to my phone and stumbled across the instructions for blocking certain calls.  I have a Panasonic and it lets you block calls from blocked numbers and up to 30 known numbers.  Now the phone rings once, reads "Caller Blocked" and that's it.  Much less disturbing.  The manual says that once the phone recognizes the number it gives them a busy signal then hangs up.  I really like this phone.   ;D:thumbsup: :peace:

I also get unwanted phone calls from someone that says they are calling about my credit card.  That there is nothing wrong.  At that point I hang up, so I don't know what else they would say.  Recently I got a call from someone who claimed they were from Publishers Clearinghouse and I had won.  They went through a whole process of getting me to verify that I had won and then told me I needed to get a card from Wal-Mart with an amount of money and that the money would be reimbursed.  That's when I called a friend of mine who is now Sheriff of my county.  He told me to tell the woman on the phone that he was on the other line and if this was legit to call him and he would let me know.  When I told her that she hung up.
