Does anyone know the longest anyone has to wait for an autopsy to come back? I have my reasons for asking this. Need to know. I have called the hospital and and I heard no longer than 3 months. It has been 7 months and we were told NOONE has heard anything on the person yet. Could family just NOT be telling us or maybe do NOT want us to know????? Any suggestions or ideas or anything would help right now. :BangHead: :angry7: Just seems to make excuses every time we ask if they got resulys back yet. :crybaby2: ???

[/quote It doesn't take that long I think you are being snowballed There is another way to get the reasons why a person as died. You can pay to get a copy of the death certificate you just need to request a form and you can do this on line in the state you are in its called vital records the death certificate which should tell you what the person died from or at least the causee of death.

I have never heard of it taking seven months for an autopsy. It is usually 2-4 weeks at the most. I would request a copy of the death certificate. It is public knowledge just like a birth certificate or marriage certificate is.

Have to agree. it does not take that long. It sounds like the immediate family (who would have received the report) does not want to share the information. Go to your courthouse (the county where the deceased died), and request a copy of the death certificate. It is public knowledge and you can get it, you will have to pay, but it's only a few dollars.
-
How are you related to the person? It sounds like you are getting the run around. There are instances because of caseloads that they are backed up. It shouldnt take that long.
-
Well if you are not the next of kin, then you will not be notified, however if it takes that long because there is evidence of foul play, then the police will still be doing there investigation. However, an autopsy with the coroners office shouldn't take that long to complete if and when they decided on the date they will be doing it. Unless they have released the body to a funeral home!

Could family just "not be telling you"? It sounds like YOU aren't immediate family. If you aren't the nearest living realitive then the hospital or autopsy place or whatever will not tell you anything. I don't know why it takes so long for results from say toxology reports from an autopsy when you have them in 48 hours or less for a job. Maybe the family isn't telling you. If you are a distant family member maybe they think you don't need to know. My cousin's cousin (no relation to me) over dosed on drugs. She refuses to admit that. They done an autopsy (and I have my ways of knowing things also) and I KNOW he did in fact over dose on pills. But if you mention it to her she says the results are not back and it has been like 2 years. Denying he was a pillhead doesn't change the fact that he was in fact a pillhead and ate too many of them and died as the result.

It took me six months to find out the cause of death for my 11 year old son....it was horrible waiting...and waiting.....I hope you get answers really soon.....sorry to hear you are going through this....

I don't think a death certificate tells the exact cause of death such as drug over dose or something like that...does it?
I don't know about where you are but where I live it would be hard to get a copy of a death certificate if you are not immediate family or have a real need to have it. They won't just give it to you. And you have to get it from them. You can't obtain it on your own. And birth certificate's are not public information. Anybody that wants to cannot just go get a copy of MY birth certificate.
You can obtain a birth certificate of anyone born in the state of KY by filling out a form and paying $10.00. It is public record and kept on file in Frankfort, KY. I don't know how it is in other states. Death certificates are a part of public record, too, as well as marriage certificates, divorce certificates, mortgages, liens, etc.

Thank you all for your responses. yes we are immediate family . When we called they said it was already released. We called her and she denies she ever got it and keeps telling us she is going to call hospital and find out about it. She always has excuses. The parents are divorced. I would think she would at LEAST tell her Ex due to the child being his also. :BangHead: :angry7: :bs:

OH No this is a child??? I can't imagine the pain you all must be going thru. Especially not knowing what happened. I've lost a loved one and still don't really know what happened. His family says they did not do an autopsy due to religious reasons. Yes you can get a copy of the death certificate.

i have never heard of it taking tat long...just thought it was was a few weeks

That seems way too long. It should have only taken a few weeks or maybe a couple months at the longest. Something is going on.

Sounds like this autopsy is holding up an insurance payment or some other death benefit. In either case in most states autposys are public records. And if your family you can ask for and of course pay for an independant autopsy seperate from the state autopsy.
