Title: Grandpa got sick on Christmas
Post by: rainman306 on December 26, 2013, 01:53:56 pm
My Grandpa got sick on Christmas during lunch.  I have the following question, if this happened to your Grandpa (or anyone really) would you:

1.  Stop Eating during the event
2.  Continue Eating during the event

I stopped eating but some of my relatives kept on eating.

It depends on what you mean by "sick".  If he just had a headache or stomach ache, we would continue eating.  We would give him something to help his discomfort but continue with the dinner.  Now if he was sick...that's a different story and of course we would not continue eating.

Yes it does matter how sick he was.Heard on TV today that more people have heart attacks the day after Christmas or the following few days then a regular day all the stress I suppose.

I am so sorry your Grandpa got sick.  I hope he feels better soon.  If I were in that situation, I would have stopped eating.

Also, by the way my Grandpa will be 91 years old in February, so he is unfortunately quite elderly.

I think some of my relatives on that side of the family are a little off in their manners ...

1.  One of his kids won a lottery (a smaller one)
2.  And another one got hundreds of thousands above and beyond house value from Walmart to move and relocate for the building of a store.

I think if someone starts seriously choking/throwing up then you need to stop and assist and then go back to eating if you can. I think I would find it difficult to do so.

It wouldn't hurt anyone to pause the meal and assist an elderly patriarch.  Granted too many people would just get in the way, but it would be respectful to pause, maybe say a group prayer for him and wait to see if he could return to the festivities.

I hope he's doing better and doesn't have these episodes often.  Hopefully he was just eating too fast and will see his next birthday and more.

It definitely depends on exactly what went on. If he had a bug and wasn't feeling well I would make sure he got comfortable and then return to the meal. I would expect everyone else to eat while it was hot. If it was an emergency then we would probably all ended up following to the emergency room till we knew his condition. I hope your Grandpa is alright now.

Sick how?  Just feeling bad?  A stomach ache from eating too much?  Passed out in the floor?  Puked on the table?

Depends on what you mean.  If he had a major medical issue then I would probably not keep eating.  But if he left the table and was just feeling a little bad I probably would keep eating.

Also because people eat way too much and eat stuff they shouldn't eat.  People who are diabetic eat crap they know they shouldn't eat and end up in the hospital.

By sick I mean starting to choke and throwing up.

If he got choked then I would stop eating until he was okay. If he threw up in the room where I was eating I probably would not be able to keep eating.  Surely people didn't keep eating while he was obviously choked pretty bad.  Hope he is okay.
