I'm keeping mine for making videos so I don't need to pay for an upgrade to Camtasia. The key is to keep it off the Internet, so I used an old Compac Celeron with 2 Gb of memory to install CrunchBang Linux on for an Internet Appliance. Now that people are in a panic, I see these older computers on Craigslist for as little as $20 and they work great for this.
How about you?
Are you keeping XP and are you worried about infections getting worse?

I am keeping Windows XP on my computers for now but have thought about upgrading one of them. I have discs to reinstall XP, if needed, to get rid of viruses.

Yes I have done that a couple of times years ago, but you also get rid of all your programs and data that are not backed up and that took me weeks to get back to normal.

I never did use Windows XP since I didn't need it at that time, but now I am understanding why people will stick to an OS for many years... I feel that Windows 7 will be the "new" Windows XP in the later future since how HORRIBLE Windows 8 is
To be honest there are a lot of vulnerability around OS, antivirus, firewall, and websites.... Especially the Heartbleed bug that has been around 2 years (I believe) and they just found out about it a month ago... As long as your smart about your computer usage, you should be fine... Most infection are general so having a good firewall/antivirus that can block out most of it.. Unless you have a personal attacker, you should be good

I'm keeping my XP as long as it's still working. I don't use any antivirus program as I found that I get along just fine with Ccleaner used every day. I quit paying for AV programs like McAfee as it just took up too much memory with the scans and also I believe that many of the viruses are installed through these programs. Firefox works great and Ccleaner. Until I absolutely have to buy another pc, I'm keeping what I've got. I only have 7 in total old pc's around the house and will be taking to the dump as soon as I can steal all the gold out of them LOL!

I'm keeping XP. I've been using it ever since it came out and I like it. I'm not too worried about viruses because virus programs keep updating. If and when I can no longer get any virus programs to run on XP, then I'll change but in the meantime, XP is here to stay on my computers.
BTW, I have THREE computers with XP, one for fun, one for work, and one for backup. ;D

You should put CrunchBang Linux on the spare just to try it out, you may be surprised how much faster it runs.

Thank you, oldbuddy. Great idea! I will give that some thought for practicality.

For me - it's always a question whether to upgrade or stay where I am. It's interesting how many of you still use XP.

My desktop is still XP - it's been wiped several times over the past few years due to virus infections. Basically it's only used for digitizing VHS tapes I still have and using a few other programs I find useful that I just don't want to pay extra for the upgraded one that's compatible with Win 7. I also have a laptop with XP I hardly use anymore, but nice for backup/emergencies.
I like my Win 7 laptop - that's my main computer these days. I keep a fairly regular image of the hard drive in case it crashes - then it's just a matter of swapping the hard drive and installing the image and I'm good to go.
My next upgrade won't be until Win 9 (or whatever comes after 8) - can't stand 8 from working with it on friends/family who has it. I do a lot of programming and video editing and Win 8 is not very user-friendly for such workhorse applications. Sure I can change the configuration to get more of a Win 7 navigation back, but I really can't stand the tile interface. If I wanted that on a laptop or desktop...I would have bought a tablet.
Hoping by Win 9, they come up with a better hybrid interface - the Win 8 one is definitely not business friendly at all. Great for people who just surf the internet, but not for application development or anything business productivity related.

Running legacy systems for personal and business use is not new to me. I've worked for companies doing this as the applications or devices used just couldn't support newer systems. I have at least one family that does this with a DOS based propietary software that cannot handle the newer systems - even if "XP Mode" is being run on the newer systems. We've attempted to run virtual environments with Windows XP piggybacked, but this was never succcessful.

I have a laptop with Windows XP. I plan to keep it, since it is the first operating system I worked with. I also have a laptop that uses Windows 7. It is nearly 3 years old and my husband paid $155 to repair it last year around this time. He found a computer repairman in our area that fixed the Windows XP laptop for $60 and I plan to save up and get myself a new laptop.   :rainbow:

I love my windows xp. My old pc is the best! Haven't had any major problems with any virus. I do use Ccleanner and sometimes Spybot Search and Destroy.

I have an old desktop that barely manages to run Windows XP.... I won't be dealing with trying to change anything on it. I don't even really use it anymore. There are some things stored on its hard drive though that I've been meaning to retrieve. I suppose I could remove a lot of programs and never connect it to the internet and just use it as a sort of storage device, at least until I'm financially able to give it a good make-over so it'll will have a larger HD and update the system.

I have got new computer about a year ago and installed with Windows 7. So now I don't have to worry about XP. :) Windows 7 is better anyway.

Move the files you want to keep to the Cloud (free) and install Linux (free). It just might surprise you how much life is left in the old gal.

What's the sad part? You can still run Linux on it, in fact you can even Dual Boot it and keep your old Windows too, or boot it from a USB stick or CD and not change anything that was there.

I did use Windows XP, now using Windows Vista which is always giving me problems.
