A large portion of Ebay's customer information is under the possession of hackers... Information regarding contact name, birth date, phone number, email address, and street address. Paypal on a separate network wasn't affected. But for those in the FC community that uses Ebay, please make sure to reset/change your account password as soon as possible. Also be wary of fake emails and phone calls about recent/past ebay orders
Now I know why, I was recently receiving fake USPS emails (in my spam inbox) about picking up/verifying my ebay orders -_-

Glad I don't have an account with ebay. I never have found their site very user friendly but I know a lot of people who love it!

Wow that sucks

Thank you for this information. It feels like every time I turn around recently some major site or business is getting hacked. It certainly makes me more than a little concerned about the safety of my online information.
-
My husband does a lot on ebay so when he received a text and voice mail regarding it from his mother he and I both went into a bit of panic mode. So far (from what I know) neither he nor my account have been affected. Phew.
-
Thank you for the information. This was very helpful.
-
Who hacked ebay......
"a Shanghai hacking group linked to the Peoples Liberation Army"
Sounds scary.
If you have your ebay password the same as your ebay email login password, you probably should change that too. :confused1:
-
I have never used Ebay but feel for those who may be affected by this. Paypal is owned by Ebay but they way it is kept completely separate and wasn't affected.
-
Good info~thanks!
-
Thanks for the information. Seems digital storage of information is not safe anywhere.
-
That is scary because I have an account, but have not used it for a while.
-
Ebay is very fascinating, people who post things to sell there if you look at a topic on Dumpster Diving on facebook, people who dumpster dive find a lot of good stuff that was thrown away by local businesses or big places like Gamestop, Target, etc. then they turn around and post those items to sell. I for one don't really want to buy from ebay when god knows what percent was good trash that was found in dumpsters.
-
Just like the discount retailer targget and they still haven't recover their from hacking incident yet.
-
Good thing i do not use but soooo upsetting as i dont feel anything is safe what is the world coming to....
-
I'm a seller on eBay and my husband is a buyer, so we changed both passwords just in case! People really do stink when they have nothing else to do then to try and disrupt others lives and lively-hood! Oh well!
-
I am also a Seller on eBay. It IS scary to think that hackers are able to get into big companies like eBay.
It is a good practice to change your passwords regularly; but for most of us, we know it and just don't do it.
-
havent noticed any issues but upon receiving the email i was quick to change my password. glad that it didnt affect the area involved with paypal that would hav been really worrisome. dont understand why people cant just do an honest days work anymore instead of trying to steal other peoples information it is maddening.

So glad I have not done any business since Dec. I have not logged on to change my password yet. I guess I need to. It is such a hassle to go back and change PW. I have to rewrite them in my code book. There are too many to remember.

I've already changed my password. It's too bad, because I really liked my other one. At least Ebay says there doesn't seem to be any evidence that any of the stolen information was improperly used, or even that it has been decrypted yet. So the faster everyone changes their passwords, the less chance the crooks will have of getting anything out of the stolen encrypted information.
-
I don't use ebay. Thank You!
-
I haven't changed my password on eBay but I suppose I better do that. I had forgotten they were hacked. Thanks for bugging my memory.
-
I have an account there, I am so sick of hackers. I had a problem last year a Target and Publix both.
-
Nothing is 100% safe and secure anymore. >:(
I've gotten a few letters over the years from various companies and banks that I do business with that their data has been compromised - so it's not limited to eBay or the Internet. :-\
-
If you use the same ebay email & password for paypal, probably should change that as well. Hackers when they crack the passwords already have everyone's email attached to ebay, they'll just put two & two together.
My ebay address is the same as paypal & I use the same passwords on both......well, did. Changed them both just in case. My paypal is directly connected to my bank account :/
-
Thanks for the info. Good to know. Always change your passwords every now and then.
-
I have an account with them but never purchase anything from them.
-
thanks for the information. People can do any crazy stuff just to get your money in their pocket.
-
I am a frequent Ebay user (mostly buying), so when I did hear about the hack I immediately changed my password. Very frustrating. This is the reason I don't consider sites, which is meant to save multiple passwords for ease of use. I'm sure they will eventually be hit too.
-
I heard about eBay getting hacked the day it happened and changed my password immediately.I also changed my PayPal password since PayPal is owned by eBay,just in case the hackers got that information too.
-
I saw this on the news the other day. I better go and change some more passwords!

I would have thought that e had tighter security than that

I have seen something about this elsewhere, but didn't do anything about it at the time. I have used ebay in the past and have been very happy with my dealings with the site. It's too bad we have to be constantly guarding our passwords and identity on the Internet. Thanks for this thread reminding me to go protect myself.
-
Thank you for the information, I guess I'm changing my email.

I heard about this on the news too. This time I'm in the clear as I don't have an account with eBay. I did get hit with the Target hack, had to get my debit card re-issued - but I caught that quickly as I'm constantly monitoring my credit/debit cards.
It's for reasons like this that I choose not to subscribe to some of those "all inclusive" online financial tools. Yes, it's a nice idea to place all your financial information in one "secure" site, however, if that site has not yet been hacked - you really don't know what security weaknesses are there lurking, waiting for some hacker to exploit. I'm more likely to trust a site after it's been hacked rather than before. Why? Because the hack will expose the weaknesses in the system and the business will plug the holes.
Sites being hacked is just something we all need to deal with in this age of information technology. As technology continues to advance, so to criminal techniques and those trying to stop them. Those common sense rules of thumb are still be best defense - change your passwords often; don't use "easy to guess" passwords, be skeptical when you store any financial information online - any time you do, it's a calculated risk regardless of how secure the site; regularly monitor your financial activity for unusual charges.
Keep in mind - hacking isn't the only way people get your account information. There are those who run programs to find credit card/security code combinations until they find one that works, then use it. More of a brute force type method for stealing, but still happens. That's most likely how one of my credit cards were hacked a couple years back - it was a card I have as a backup and don't use at all, then all of a sudden I got a couple charges. To the card's credit - they contacted me within the hour of those charges being made flagging them as fraudulent. Was impressed.

I read about this. It's pretty messed up. Chase has also been having problems.
-
Wow, that is horrible. I don't use ebay personally but I appreciate your post. This type of crime is becoming so prevalent these days.
-
Wow that is ridiculous, its hard to trust any sites now it seems someone is always trying to hack into them, thanks for letting me know.
-
I use ebay quite a bit and received an email from them asking me to change my password, which I did. It is very concerning when things like this happen.
-
I never received any emails. Wish these people would find better things to do with their lives
-
This just goes to prove it no site is un hackable . If the government can be hacked by people which it has happen before then any site can be & the gov has ton of security I'm sure
-
ebay is large enough to keep us protected..they need to check into their security systems
-
That is crazy it seems they can hack anything, glad paypal wasn't affected
-
Thank you for the info. No wonder I was asked to change my password.
I didn't want to change it. I was so used to my password, even afraid to forget if I changed it. But I know it's for security purposes.
