It's an opinion.

We know the megalodon was real because its teeth were found. Nobody has found anything to say mermaids do or did exist.

If mermaids did exist, they would look similar to manatees and nothing like Aerial.

I really do not think mermaids exist and as another member mentioned, they would most likely not look like what we expect when we think of mermaids (not glamorized ).

As far as I can tell they are fake. I still could not fathom how it would work with I'm assuming lungs to breathe yet be underwater. As said earlier it would probably be like a manatee at best.

If there isn't concrete proof that something is real/true then it's an opinion. If you have proof then it's fact. So which is it?

Technically, we can't say something doesn't exist, just that it hasn't been seen before.  They could exist (either the way we envision them or more manatee like) on some far off planet we've yet to discover. 

Do/Did they exist here on Earth?  I doubt it.
