Every year I say I am going to stick with something and some times I do and some times I don't. But it's a good self motivator even if you don't stick with it! :)

I don't want to make any new year's resolutions this year, because I give up before I reach my goal. Small positive things that I do on a daily basis works well for me, and this way I am not overwhelmed.

I usually don't, 2013 was the first time that I did. I set goals that I want to accomplish for the new year, and I have already began working towards 2015.

I don't make them so I don't get disappointed if I don't succeed. Instead I try and change things as I see needed during the year

I start and stop them throughout the year. As usual the two big ones are to lose weight and exercise more. I would also like to see if I can make more from fusioncash in 2015 then I did in 2014.

What is superstitious about a New Year's resolution?
Title: Re: New Years Resolutions

The superstitious thing about it is if you dont...or do make one something good...or bad will happen.

Sorta like..step on a crack...break your mothers back...

I was gonna make my NYR but first i need to check Mars is in its right rotation with Saturn!!

I have never heard that it was a superstition. It's just a traditional practice to affirm some kind of change in your life for the new year.

Not at all. There's no belief that something good or bad will happen if you meet or don't meet a resolution. A New's Years Resolution is simply a goal that you set for yourself for the new year.

Hawkeye...do a little more research please....

In Greece many people smash a pomegranate right after midnight outside their front door.  Why make this mess? Well they believe that the seeds will bring prosperity and good fortune. They also put a coin in a cake such as Vasilopita. The cake is cut at midnight and whoever gets the coin is said to have good luck in the New Year. The Greek often adorn tables with symbols of happiness and wealth including nuts, honey, fresh fruit and olive branches. Dating back to the 6th century BC, some hang a squill (or regular) onion on their front door to ward off bad spirits.

None of those things would be considered new year's resolutions. There are various new year's traditions that are superstitious, but setting a new years resolution is not. They are not the same thing.

Point being whether you wanna call it resolution or tradition....superstition is involved and related to the DAY!!!

Title: Re: New Years Resolutions
Post by: hawkeye3210 on December 29, 2014, 03:24:53 pm
Then you really have no point. Setting a new year's resolution is simply one of many new year's traditions. It doesn't have to be new years to set a resolution. People set them all the time during the year and have various times to accomplish them.

superstition - definition of superstition by The Free Dictionary
www.thefreedictionary.com/superstition
An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.
Title: Re: New Years Resolutions
Post by: hawkeye3210 on December 29, 2014, 04:36:11 pm
Resolution- a. A firm decision to do something: b. A course of action determined or decided on:
e.g. made a resolution to get more exercise; his resolution is to get up early.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/resolutions

It's clear that resolutions and superstitions are two different things. If you really want to reach and claim that in your example people setting "resolutions" for superstitious reasons, fine, but in no way does that make resolutions superstitious. That's just rather silly logic. Using that same logic, anyone who doesn't cut their facial hair is doing it because of a superstition. Your argument is based on a false premise.

Yes..resolution a firm decision to do something......But i am NOT walking into that situation without my good luck charm...

Not sure what world you live in....i see it all the time....

I am not saying everyone that makes a resolution is superstitious and i am sure that some that make them are sincere and have succcess.

But they can go hand in hand too...thats all i am saying.Dont say they dont.

I am making a resolution to stop my fear of flying.....and when they do they bring their Jesus cross with them...get it???

Whether that plane landed safely or crashed that cross would have no bearing on the matter.....

Of course unless you walked into the cockpit and forced it down the pilots throat and he choked to death and no one was there to fly the plane.
Title: Re: New Years Resolutions
Post by: hawkeye3210 on December 29, 2014, 07:00:12 pm
If you need a "good luck charm" to complete a resolution, that makes you the one that is superstitious. It doesn't make the resolution a superstition. They don't go hand in hand. They simply don't.

Setting a resolution isn't going to make a non-superstitious all of sudden turn to a superstition to complete it. It's just not. A superstitious person might, but there is absolutely nothing about setting a resolution that is superstitious.

And this of course has nothing to do with setting a resolution.

Well thats my point...a person may set a resolution but may need a superstition to carry it out.....

Again the person is afraid to fly and says im gonna not be afraid anymore and he relys on his good luck charm to be with him and if he forgets it he doesnt board the plane.

They don't work, you'd put in more work into it if you had a personal conviction or a reasonable plan to succeed.
