Title: Family traditions.
Post by: lbeery on December 27, 2014, 09:34:47 am
What family traditions do any of you have for the new year?  Our family makes a pillowcase on New years day.  We don't know for certain why we do it except that is has always been done.  We think it is supposed to catch all the good luck for the coming year.  Some say it is to insure prosperity for the new year but my mom said it was just some female ancestor wanting to get off her feet for a while.  Who knows but we all always do it!

Our family dynamics change so often we haven't created any traditions.  Although for the last 4 years my guy and I have gone to his brothers to play cards.  I don't see that happening this year though... once again more changes in family dynamics.  Sure would be nice to come up with a tradition he and I do together.

My family puts pennies on the windows for luck/prosperity/good health.
Also, the first person who should call you on New Years should be a male - supposed to be lucky for some reason.  Crazy I know.....and sexist.  lol

Besides watching the ball drop my husband and I do not have any New Years traditions. It is partially because I usually have to work. I would like to make some though b/c I like family traditions.

We usually spend the night in church as well sing and give thanks for life, prosperity, and the privilege of another year.

I cannot think of any family tradition that we follow. It would be interesting to start some new tradition.

Absolutely none. After Christmas, we usually get back into the regular flow of everyday life.

My family is from the south so we will be having collard greens and black eyed peas which symbolizes money for the new year.

That's a very interesting tradition!  I was intrigued and went on the hunt to find out what it really means and where the tradition came from.  Not much info out there, but I did find a little something:

The tradition is IRISH:

Eat cabbage and make 2 pillow cases because the cabbage represents all the money you'll receive in the New Year and the 2 pillow cases are for holding the money!!

We don't have any family traditions involving the New Year.

We have several during the year......strawberry picking at the Berry Patch; Apple picking at the Apple Orchard, then making apple butter; and making Lefse during the Christmas season.

We don't really have any traditions for New Year's except for a certain menu for New Years dinner and we didn't even do that this year because I hurt my leg and couldn't go shopping.  We are down to just me and my two grown sons now so it doesn't matter anyway just happy we have food and what we need.  I think what you guys do is cool though.

We have this family tradition back in the Philippines every new year, we need to have 13 different kinds of round fruits in the table, that was all I got this new year, we did not cook a lot of food, because we went to our friends house for dinner the night before new years day.
