I opened my windows today, since it's nice out and I wanted to air out the house a little.
The noise from outside just about drove me batty! :o
I can hear the traffic from the highway about a quarter of a mile away, and I swear, it sounds like they're coming up my drive..
Plus the birds, and the kids, and just people talking- it was all so LOUD!
I don't know how people who live in big cities stand it.

It's easy. When you've been around it all of your life, you don't even hear it anymore.

The birds?
All is quiet here, no sounds from outside. Thankfully - I do know how sounds can get to you, we used to have kids playing basketball in the street & my neighbor across the street used to scream all the time. It's a shame that there are no basketball courts in the parks around close that these kids have to play in the street; I was very thankful when these people moved away, Now it is back to quiet. :)

Our neighborhood is quiet :) If it wasn't so hot, I would love to open the windows and air out the house.
-
i totally understand --our neighbor has 3 dogs that never shut up they bark nonstop so i never raise our windows they are loud enough without the windows up --plus i live next to a transmission shop and all the noise from there --i just keep the windows down and turn on the air!

We don't get much for traffic noise. I welcome the bird songs though!
-
I can hear commercial planes and trains in the distance, but I've gotten to use to this. The only thing that still can wake and periodically bother me is lawn mowing (which I don't hear as much due to circumstances) and the grandfather clocking chiming at home, which I still keep because I do like it's look.

I live in a rural area and for the most part there is not that much traffic on my road. But I have some neighbors who scream a lot and have visitors that sit there and blow the horn solid until someone comes outside. Grrr. People are so inconsiderate.

I would guess you get used to it. For me, it was just such a shock, after being closed up and quiet in my house all winter. :)

Yes, the birds! I had one sitting right outside my window the longest time screeching! I think he was warning the others about the neighbors' cat. :)
And of course, all the others chimed in to let him know "message received!" :D

Wear ear plugs. They also work if you are trying to sleep in a noisy environment. Open your windows for ventilation when the traffic is low.

That's exactly what I wound up doing! :D

I guess after awhile some people don't "hear" the noise anymore. I don't think I could get used to a lot of noise. I like a quiet setting myself. Even leaf blowers get on my nerves. ::)

I've felt that way before too. I remember a book titled "Too Much Noise" by Ann McGovern. It was about a man named Peter who complained to a wise man that his house made excessive noise. The wise man told Peter to get a cow, then a donkey, then a sheep, then a hen, and finally, a dog and a cat. The cow, donkey, sheep, hen, dog, and cat were talking all the time, and then Peter started to go crazy. Then the wise man told Peter to dismiss all the animals. After he did, the sounds his home made didn't bother him anymore.

I live in a rural area, so I don't have much noise when I go outside. When I visit my parents, it is a little noisier, but it doesn't irritate me. I wouldn't like a busy city, though.

Sometimes listening to the environment an nature is a relaxation thing for me I enjoy it sometimes
-
sometimes the noise is helpful for me so I can sleep. And sometimes I agree with you that it is hard to concentrate when there are a lot of noises everywhere. I believe the people who reside in the cities have gotten used to it. There bodies have gotten used to that day in and out.

lol
Ever since reading this, I now hear the birds all the time. They are a noisy lot, but they sound cute chirping away. That is the only sound I hear coming from outside, so it just sounds like nature. I must have not been truly hearing it. Wonder when it will get on my nerves, I probably will "forget" about it after awhile again when it goes back to being just white noise. Sounds lovely though, for now :)

Now that I am in my late 40's, I love the quiet more than ever. However strangely, I love to hear kiddies playing outside in the street, I find it quite therapeutic. I think it reminds me of when I was a child not feeling well and I had to lay in bed with my bedroom windows open and listen to the shenanigans of the kids outside. I felt like I was halfway outside with the windows open. I also find people mowing their lawns equally therapeutic.

I guess I'm one of those people that just get used to noise. When we bought our house we didn't realize it was so close to a train track and it did take quite a while to get used to it but now it doesn't bother either of us. We've been in this house almost 38 years . Now, when the grandkids all come over and get playing in the house, that drives me nuts after a little while. Thankfully their parents will have them settle down after a while. lol

I wish I could hear more bird song. I put out feeders to attract them to my garden.
I live in a small rural town with one house between my apartment building and Main Street. Sometimes the traffic is a bit annoying, but usually I can tune it out. The neighbors, across the wall, in the house work in their backyard almost every day clanging, sawing, welding, etc. The guy in the next apartment blasts his TV and radio, many times both at the same time due to his mental health problems. Another neighbor has dogs and kids that can be noisy at times. The kids like to climb up on the wall and mess around. Yesterday they were shooting their BB gun at the birds.
That all sounds a lot noisier than it is. Right now it's quiet except for the occasional car driving by sound. I don't count the birds in the noise. They're music.

If you live in the city for a while you get used to it.
-
You learn to block it out I think.
-
I think if you lived in a big city you do pretty much "block it out"! Probably, you just get so used to it!
-
I live in a city so sometimes we get neighbors obnoxiously blasting their music through the windows, which is the pinnacle of annoyance!
But birds and the sound of a few cars driving by? That sounds rather pleasant, actually!
-
I'm glad we live in the country. I could never stand the noise from a city. The traffic even out here is occasionally too loud.
-
I hear ya lol get hear ya. Any way. I live next to a hwy its hard to get my 2 year old daughter to sleep and take naps but we make do.

my block is too quiet. I only hear walkers talking on their cell phones. Sometimes early in the morning, I hear birds chirping.
-
I live a in a country but we are not very far from railroad tracts. Aside from the trains the only noise I hear are the birds which really nice and relaxing.
-
I don't easy to get annoyed for the sound as long as I am not taking nap or sleep
