Title: Hunger Strike at the Utah State Prison
Post by: sherryinutah on August 04, 2015, 02:42:36 am
I heard on the news tonight that 48 inmates at the Utah State Prison are on a Hunger Strike.  Apparently, they are refusing to consume the meals that the prison provides because they want to experience an improvement in their living conditions.

Even though they're refusing to consume the meals provided....

they have been seen buying and consuming products from the commissary.

What do you think about all this?

Can they reasonably expect to be treated better?

I would let them starve if that is what they are wanting to do in order to get their demands met.  They are in prison ~ they shouldn't be allowed special privileges or rights!

You know, if you're in a state prison you probably deserve to be there and of course, we all know that the "accommodations" have to be sparse and the food probably not so good.  But, does anyone really think that a "hunger strike" will change anything???  Somehow I doubt it!   So better eat up and be grateful it's not just "bread and water"!!

The prisoners have some legitimate demands/complaints. I wouldn't be so quick to dumb it down to some grade school "we want better food" hunger strike.

I don't feel one bit sorry for them, and I wouldn't mind if they all starved. Prison is supposed to be a punishment, they aren't supposed to be treated like kings. They really should be getting bread and water.

It's not called "PRISON" for nothing!  If they don't like their treatment, maybe they should have thought about that before they broke the law.  There's so many people that are homeless today (with children).  These people did nothing wrong (legally) to deserve their circumstances, yet they are suffering.  Prisoners have a roof over their heads, they eat 3 times a day, and get to see a physician when they're sick.  I think they better quit while they're ahead.

I say let them get hungry. If they want to go on a hungry strike keep them out of the commasery also. That way they will get hungry quicker.  Prisoners have it better then a lot of people on the outside. Don't do the crime and you want have to do the time.  Why should the get special treatment. Most of the time they have better lunches then some of the children do at school with the first lady's lunch program.

Black Sheep...couldn't have said it better.  I agree completely with your view.  Although conditions need to be reasonable, it is not supposed to be somewhere you want to come back to...although the recidivism rate is high!!!  So many do!

They should incorporate a farming system in prison, so if the prisoners want something they could learn to grow it & cultivate it themselves.  Learn to take care and nurture something to have a better life.

I don't feel sorry for them at all, at least they are eating regular meals, it is prison afterall.   In college I ate a lot of Ramen, not because I liked it so much, but that was what I could afford.  There are children that aren't getting fed and schools provide most of their meals... there is a restaurant in the city of Anaheim, a 5 star restaurant called the White House, that feeds 150 children every day because they aren't getting enough food to eat.  Like I said the prisoners should be happy they have food period.

I agree with you here!  A lot of people don't like Sheriff Joe Arpaio, but you know what?  He's a big animal lover and has many animals under his care in Maricopa County.  The female prisoners are the ones who care for these animals, and I think that's a wonderful idea!  It puts some semblance of humanity back in to their souls, and teaches them that they're not the only ones on the planet that need love and nurturing.  In the end, I do believe it will make them better people.

Sorry....you did the crime, you do the time.  You're in there fir a reason, it's a prison for God's sake, not a spa.  Next they will want lobster!  You don't want to eat what they serve you, starve!

They want sanitary conditions, not lobster. This has nothing to do with the food.

But, does anyone really think that a "hunger strike" will change anything???  Somehow I doubt it!

Gandhi lead multiple hunger strikes while in prison. There's a long history of hunger strikes leading to changes to prison conditions, as well as other political issues. It worked in 2013 in California, as prison conditions were reformed. I have little doubt that this will likely end up resulting in some changes in the Utah prison system.

Haven't heard this. But if they are buying food from elsewhere, how can they be taken seriously. I wonder how the food gets into the prison. Is the commissary in the prison? Not familiar with this. BMaston12

I don't know anything about this, but I would say that they really have no reason to complain...in some instances, prison inmates are treated better than others like the homeless, etc. I'm not saying I don't think they should receive food, etc., but seriously, it's prison for a reason...

Prisoners should be punished, not rewarded.

From the food I see served on television shows in prisons, it looks pretty bad.  I also know from having worked in a prison kitchen that you don't have a lot to work with.

That's a really interesting thought. My gut reaction is that this is prison, not a vacation resort, a learning facility or culinary experience. It is prison, where all luxuries, privileges, and perks have been terminated. Why should prisoners have a say in what they eat, or even the quality of what they eat, when they are clearly in prison because they have violated civil living. Someone suggested why the prisoners can't learn to cultivate plants, to grow their own crops and whilst I agree this would teach them to nurture something, gardening is a real privilege and to many, a worthwhile hobby. Also, to use the commissary facilities whilst on a hunger strike is rather selective isn't it? In my opinion, they shouldn't get commissary facilities either.

I have modified my post since I read a little bit about the hunger strike.

Their list of demands included moving gang leaders out of a maximum-security unit, said Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman, Brooke Adams. All of the participating inmates are documented gang members, she said. What!!??? :o

Let them strike, they are being treated good and should be served bread and water.  The crimes they committed they deserved it.
