I recently retired from teaching Many ask me if I want to substitute teach as added income. I hestitate too because I like early childhood and I am afraid I would be put in high school or middle school, where I am not as comfortable. What age group would you prefer to work with if you had a choice?

I love teaching, I never taught in school but if I would teach, I think it would be kindergarten.

In todays world?Probably kindergarden or 1st grade.I dont think id get the stuffings beat out of me by them!!

I've taught pre-school and toddlers in church. Hard work! But they're so cute!!
I've taught middle school kids in church. Better. Think they're my favorite. Most of them aren't quite old enough to be smart alecs yet. And they're not cute and they know it, or they might be cute but they don't think they are. :silly:
I've taught many different ages in Health, First Aid and CPR. The best students are the ones that are there to learn. If the teacher is good enough and the students have a good time while they're learning, I think everyone wins. So I don't think there is a perfect age to teach to. :-\
Great answer, huh? :notworthy:

I would teach third grade. Not higher than that class.

I used to teach preschool ESL. I taught teenagers (hardest) and adults. I prefer the little kids.

Not for me,I give the teachers a big thumbs up for all they do all the time.

I hear you, I was placed at a high school but wanted to work with elementary children.

I wouldn't be a good teacher but if I had to choose it would be kindergarten, 1st grade or 2nd grade.

The only time I really had much teaching experience was when working with middle or high school kids when I was in college. I have to say as a young adult I preferred working with students 2-3 years younger because they had the understanding and respect to be kind and willing to learn while the younger ones always assumed youth=inexperienced and talked back.
Then again part of that was I taught an extracurricular and was lucky enough that most of the kids wanted to be there. I imagine that if I was teaching a general classroom I'd go for late elementary to early middle school.

I'm not a teacher but I truly believe teachers are sent from Heaven!

I'd rather work with high schoolers. At that point they are (mostly) capable of comprehending and being more self directed in doing their own work. I don't have the patience to work with a large group on younger kids for an extended period.

When a teacher caught me smoking outside about 50 yrs ago,i wish he took me to heaven instead of Assistant Principals office!

Maybe 1st or second grade they are still sweet and fun before the terrible teens happen. I remember my sons 5th grade teacher having so many problems with a group of girls he didn't know what to do.

I taught preschool for 17 years and would never teach any other age . the kids are very honest and loving. it is toughtest and best job I have ever had especially when I worked at Head start.
I could really see that I made a difference in the kids and their families lives. :rainbow: :rose: :peace:

I loved middle school.

I don't like to teach but I love to tutor. This is because I feel like when you are tutoring the kids really need the help and they are actually eager to learn and there grade increase significantly because of this. It doesn't really matter what grade I tutor in. Just as long the kids are eager to learn and they allow me to actually make a difference and help me to help them better their education and their future.

I used to teach ESL preschool overseas (ages 3-6). I've taught middle school age a few times (didn't like) I've also taught adult ESL (some of them were like the middle school ages). I prefer the small kids.

I would the younger child -- kindergarten , 1st grade , 2nd grade

none i was not born to babysit or teach others children. i love my own to pieces but other peoples kids annoy the he** out of me. I swear its like the parents have blinders on and dont care when their children act like little monsters out in public.

I have no teaching experience, however, like ladavia89 contended, I would much rather teach high-school (or even college) students due to their self-directed ability. Too complicating and frustrating to teach students from other age groups because of their short attention span, ha ha.
