Title: Did/Do You Let Your Kids Cook?
Post by: snuggleycutejc on September 13, 2015, 09:01:28 am
I watch the cooking shows with the kids cooking great. Today is Kids Take Over The Kitchen Day! I painted the kitchen colorful what the kids wanted but not cooking part the clean part was ok. Mine didn't want to. Do you know any kids that cooks? Nice skill for them to learn.

I let my 8 yr old son help me and he loves to crack eggs! lol ... but it can get very messy very quickly. I do believe he will love to cook when he gets older but my older son on the other hand can't even boil water and he's 25! lol

I have two daughters and only one wanted to learn how to cook from a young age. I used to let her help me make dinner when she was about 7 or 8 and she kept up the interest until by high school she was totally making dinner for the whole family on her own every night. I worked in an office all day, so it was delightful to come home to a meal waiting for me instead of having to come right home to cook myself. She still loves to cook as an adult and throws dinner parties for her friends all the time.

Yes i had them in the kitchen at a young age learning to cook and wash dishes --i wanted them to know how to take care of themselves and not need to depend on anyone --i have ms and i never know when it will be activate again so i wanted my kids to be able to take care of themselves --i have been blessed they are now 18 and 20 and can cook very good

My 17 year old son can cook anything as long as he has a recipe. My 8 year old daughter helps out occasionally but she has not gotten into as much as my son

I don't recall cooking until my early teen years, though i am sure i did small things with help when younger (like cookies). I remember always licking spoons and mixers when mother made cakes and frosting!

I not only let them cook but I encourage them to cook! Actually go so far as to say that I force them to cook.  They are required to cook one dinner, of their choice, every other week for the family. The rule is no pre-processed foods like hot dogs, frozen pizza's or TV dinners (and it must have some nutritional content, waste minimized and cost is to be inexpensive). My wife cooks one to two meals every week as do I. I try to find one new recipe every two weeks to try out on the family.  Tonight I made a coconut, curry lime dish with chicken, scallions, cilantro and jalapenos (over rice). The family loved it!  My son made steak and baked potatoes on Saturday and my wife made a creamed mushroom chicken with farfalle/bowtie noodles yesterday.

Both of my boys learned to cook at an early stage of life. Some things when they were young I did not let them do unless I was right there to help. because of the danger of hot grease and such. Both could cook using a  recipe book and I encouraged them to tweek the recipes also. Once in a while it would be a disaster but hey they were kids. I will give you an example of  what my youngest did (he was 13) His dad loved sardines  with his pinto beans. So the kid pressured a pot of pinto beans and thought since his dad liked sardines with the beans he would pressure them with the beans. Oh yeah now just picture all of those sardine bones floating around on the top of the beans.  Well they went to town and bought dinner. What are you going to do Kids.

I let my grandchildren make grilled cheese and ready to bake cookies. They use the microwave. They are 10.
