I live in the Mid-West, and I share a veggie garden with my son.
It will be frosting heavily quickly; then snow in the very near future.
So Today, I put the garden to bed. He picked the very end of the red cabbage, and I dug up the broccoli.
The squash and tomatoes has been gone for a while. Our freezers are full of bags of veggies for the winter.
Now, we can wait for all the seed catalogs that come in December and January so the gardeners don't go stir crazy....ha!

I did the exact same thing just a couple of weeks ago. When I heard there was going to be an overnight frost, I picked all my remaining tomatoes, whether red or not, and I left them on the window ledge to ripen up. I have since made some tomato sauce and have frozen everything that I don't want to eat straight away. I harvested my cucumbers and although it's November, I will soon be planting some garlic cloves so that next spring, I will be able to harvest my crop of garlics.

I put mine to bed at the end of October. Already had most everything canned. Now we have been going to a friends place and cutting wood. Oh there is so much to be cut. Almost all of the trees died during the drought. There is enough out there to last us and my dad about 5-6 years. It is a hard job. But then we think of all the nice fires we will have in the stove and how much we will save on natural gas.

our garden is done for the winter except for some carrots that we will pick as we use them. there are probably about 20 left that i use for stews or pot roasts. so they will be used in the next couple weeks :)

My son put in raised beds for me so I would not "fall on my head" bending over. It really has helped my unsteadiness (botched foot surgery years ago).
We have not tried carrots yet. One of the beds out there is a cold frame. I think I will put in a late crop of lettuce in there next year, and maybe try carrots. Along with red cabbage, we would have one box for "salad fixin's, lasting through the fall.
I have wanted to learn to can our tomatoes etc, but my kitchen is too itty bitty for doing that. So off to the freezer they go!
See, I just put the garden to rest and I am already planning spring. It's my mom's and her mom's genetics showing up here.
Cutting wood for your fire sounds wonderful.
