Normally during Lent, some people give up on something. For this Lent I give up on wine. I will not drink wine during dinner time. I also try to stay away from eating meat on Fridays.

I'm a little rusty on the meaning of Lent. I grew up in a Catholic household. I was expected to give something up through Lent and we ate fish on Friday. I've since left the religion - I'm a strong Christian though - - - - not a good Christian as I have a lot of learning to do. Particularly need to get my brain wrapped around this whole Lent thing.
-
I still do the no meat on Fridays but I think instead of giving something up, I adopted the idea of giving and helping more to others.
-
During lent I NEVER eat meat on Fridays nor ash Wednesday
-
Is that the reason for Lent, to give up something you like or just not to eat meat on Friday? I must research this.

I did not grow up Catholic and practice giving up meat during the Lenten season.
However, several years, I have chosen to give up something that I like or have on a daily basis so that I could experience on a very tiny minute scale what Christ went thru when he "gave up" his heavenly world to come to earth and live among us as a human and ultimately, give up his life for us.
The first year I "gave up" something, I gave up Diet Coke. My craving/desire for that pop caused me to pause and reflect on Christ's sacrifice for me. It was very meaningful to me because I really wanted that Diet Coke!

Thanks for some who clarifies what the word means. So it is more of a religious principle to train your body physically and spiritually to abstain from doing something that you would normally do or consume? Is it more like avoiding temptation? or a bad habit? Nice! I am trying to learn how to do this. Sometimes it is hard to give up something especially if you are addicted to doing it.

I'm not Catholic but I celebrate 40days until Easter.....I read The Entire Old Testament and reflect on the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ
-
"The 40-day fast of Lent is said to commemorate the 40-day fast of Christ. Yet, Jesus never commanded his disciples to commemorate his fast, nor is there any evidence that they did so. The first reliable mention of the 40-day fast before Easter is thought to be in letters of Athanasius, dated 330 C.E.
"Since Jesus fasted following his baptism and not before his death, the fact that some religions observe Lent in the weeks preceding Easter may seem strange. However, a 40-day fast in the early part of the year was common among ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, and Greeks. The “Christian” custom was evidently borrowed from them."

I grew up Catholic and my mom used to do the fish on Friday thing. One year, while I was still attending mass, I gave up pop. Didn't realize how much caffeine I had been consuming because boy did I have a massive headache.

I grew up catholic too.In the early days it was considered a mortal sin if you ate meat on Friday. And going to hell forever was considered punishment for a mortal sin.
<sigh>...Imagine being punished forever by a cruel god for eating a ham sandwich on a Friday!!!

For me, it is the second chance to make new year resolutions! I will abstain from all junk for the rest of the year. No more temptations for me!
-
I am Catholic and I give up meat on Fridays. But I think that most Christian Faiths celebrate the lent on 1 way or another. I sometimes give up something else like chocolate or so, but since I have given up junk foods for good fish on Fridays will do for me
